Jonathan M. Gitlin: As Ars Technica's resident petrol head, it's no secret that I've been eagerly anticipating getting my hands on Forza Motorsport 4, the latest installment of Microsoft's marquee racing game for the Xbox 360.
93 on MC... for what it is worth. Gears, Forza and UC3... pity my wallet.......
most reviewers lost their credibility with Forza 4! if you are suppose to review the game and talk only about the game being reviewed but NO, most of the reviews mention GT5 like it's something they must do or else they'll die if they don't! oh well, feeding fanboys war and trolls seems to be the trend now and it's showing it's ugly rear with Forza 4 review! why don't just stick to praising the game and less condemning other games? NO? if you do really want to compare, don't do review, do what LoT or DF are doing - compare pixels! I'm afraid we'll see the same thing happening again with BF3 and MW3 which is very likely!
i have not played gt5 so i wouldnt try and make a comparative between forza 4 and gt5. I do however have forza 3 so that would be a more proper comparison. Having played just the demo I can see there was plenty of improvements from 3 to 4. Improvements are almost a given when going from one version to the next but WOW. It is as if they started from scratch, a blank slate and built everything all over again. This is an impressive racing game. I cant imagine what forza 5 would do. I do believe that when 5 comes out we will be in the next xbox. It just seems like it makes better sense.
What I find strange is all these people saying Forza in general has flogged GT5 easy. All the while there are plently of car comps people can enter if they have a copy of GT5 and play online in the ladders where the top 2-3 people have the chnace of racing for real in the nurinburg ring 24 hour race. You don't have comps like that with arcade racers.
main difference between forza and gt5: forza makes you pay for it 3 times (so far) btw OMG this review is TERRIBLE!!!! they twist every negative into a positive, like lack of features (weather, day/night, etc) they call it the RIGHT DECISION!!! yeah right, maybe right decision so they have something new put in forza 5 i guess...and make people buy it again also notice how they completely avoid saying anything negative about the new microsoft "wireless wheel", which obviously like the wii wheel doesn't have any force feedback, which in a game like this pretty much makes it pointless
"Bluntly, you'll not get a more realistic driving game on any console" Bluntly how....? "The Top Gear test track challenges are much less infuriating than those found in GT5, and you're tasked with knocking down bowling pins to rack up a high score." " Sadly missing this time around is the ability to tune your car in an online lobby. You can load different tune settings, providing you've previously created and saved them, but I can see this omission making some of you annoyed, especially if you're constantly tweaking your car for different tracks." "it doesn't matter where I set the Kinect up. It just doesn't work properly." I don't think this guy wanted to disappoint Dan Greenwalt in any shape fashion or form. No mention of how difficult the AI actually is, how many cars are there in the game and tracks & how they *really stack up against their RL counterparts? What other features besides the Autovista are available? too many unanswered questions and too much butt kissing in this review to be taken seriously.
Oh, there's another Forza coming out? I actually had no idea...lol.
as much as i want to keep my remaining bubbles, i have to put my opinions forward. after gt3, the series has just stagnated, and can be frankly boring to play. for me, forza has always been the better franchise. perhaps there are some things that make it more accessible, but it is a great franchise although i have bought every gt, and probably will continue to buy them, forza is the new kid in town
ok you are telling the mill of gt5 player now that you like forza more now.. and so what... what about the ppl that are playing gt5 now for the first time and are real car lovers, what you tink they will choose ........you know what also i like how the Title is trolling lol and ever1 is mark trolling lol
1. Agreeing or disagreeing with someone about a game, saying you don't like a game, or whatever, isn't going to make you lose bubbles. It's saying stuff like what you said later on, about Sony jihads, that will. There's a stark difference. Yes, you can say that Forza is the better game (if it is to you, then great), but is the Sony jihad line and you calling conspiracy via personal attacks necessary to do that? 2. I didn't play GT4 because it felt like a throwaway title to me. GT3 was the best racing game on the PS2, I think. But GT4 having its online mode removed was the worst thing for that game. It made everything else about the game seem like just stuff without substance. GT5 was a return to what the series should've been. Forza has usually aimed for a different audience than GT has (which is fine as long as it's done right).
I do have to agree 100%, exactly my toughts. After GT3, it have just stagnated. Personally I enjoy a lot more Forza too. Now that I think of it, most of my friend who have played both, favour Forza serie too, tought there is still some who prefer GT. Maybe it is becouse Forza have been evolving all the time, and have superb online features, which really extend games life time... Anyways, both great franchises, and I'm glad to see Turn10 is giving us another great title to play.
ill give u a bubble:) i know lots of people that feel the same way, my brother played forza 3 and was waiting for GT5 to come out so he had a reason to buy a ps3, after playing GT5 at my house he changed his mind about buying a ps3, he was truly disappointed with it. he is not a fanboy in any way, he never goes to sites like this, and has no loyalty to either console, he just loves car games, and i have to agree with him, after all those long years, GT5 was a let down, and not the graphics king that the hard core ps3 fanboys would have you believe.
I agree! Ever since Forza franchise came out I never looked at Gt again. When I got my PS3 I was hoping to get GT5, then they came out with Prolouge what a effing waste!! GT5 was ok and definitely not worth the wait or hype that it got. Forza 4 FTW, this time around!!
I will enjoy the f**kin hell out of F4 and when i buy a ps3 (very, very soon) i will play the hell out of GT5 too because i am a car fanatic and love all racing sims regardless of platform
Same here I have GT5(as well all GT games as well) and I have Forza3, fun game both of them and I'll pick up Forza4 because I LOVE CARS! And that what comes down to for me, I love cars and I love tuning them and racing them! I going to have fun playing both of them, it's a win/win! Hate the player-not the game.
@DeFFeR You're right, "Hate the troll not the game".
I'm sure Forza 4 is a good game but only having 5 new tracks is very questionable.
That sounds pretty low to me too, but there is still a lot of tracks to race on.
I really enjoyed Forza 3, but never ended up bored in Season 6 when the races last 40 minutes on the same courses you've now raced 100's of times. More courses is all F4 needs to improve on to me.
Is this really a review? If so...why bring up GT5...soooo often. There were too many "when I spoke to Dan Greenwalt"s in there as well.
Finally a proper review that also sheds some light on how the different wheels work with the game!
Probably would be better to write a Forza review without riding on the back of GT for attention, but then most wouldn't care.
yeah believe it or not, most folks want to compare racing simulators cause car fanatics are hardcore with their game of choice. i know technicaly none gamers that only play racing games and spend hundreds on their console pc and steering wheels. i personaly dont like the bf3 mw3 comparison bullshit. but i think sims need comparisons. its great for the gamers that want their games to be become more realistic over time. kinda like when the nfl games used to compete.
Ars Technica, this website is a serious flamebait. avoid
Forza looks great, but GT is the grandfarther, and it remains a classic and always will. The game that spawned other racing sims. You can't call it yet, the dust hasn't settled hype is still high for Forza.
I've played Gt5 up until the endurance races. Haven't managed to give them a try! Hopefully I'll buy a racing wheel soon to finish it off. Forza 4 looks promising though. It'll probably take another GT and Forza game to decide it. Maybe 2 more each.
I'm gonna have to convince my neighbor to buy Forza 4 and a set of steering wheels and pedals so i can play forza 4!! I'm really looking forward to the freshness and quality that the devs have put into Forza 4! Me personally I haven't been excited about a racing game for a LONG LONG time and i think Forza 4 may have brought back that excitement well at least for me!!
I played the demo and liked it but I just bought GT5 instead. It's cheaper and looks and sounds better and the driving physics seem more realistic. Forza has a much better presentation though.
Wow...I havn't seen this much trolling for onE post before. The Heat is on....Never really played Forza, I grew up with GT1 and 2 on PS1 and I feel like they do racing Justice in terms of Simulation. I am comfortable with GT but for those with only an Xbox I suggest you buy this game as it's probably the closest thing to a great Racing Sim. on the 360.
The last gt game i liked was gt2 on ps1. I suck at racing games tbh so for me forza is a better pick because its easier to pick up and play than gt imo. Gt is a great racing game but a lil to realistic for me. Forza is also very realistic but it just seems easier to play. U really cant go wrong with either game...
How could forza be king when half of the tracks are not even accurate compared with real life tracks?
Forza 4 does indeed look brilliant and I agree with the review scores but there is really no need to go on the defensive in such a manner if you are a driving fan. GT5 and Forza 4 are both excellent racing sims. You should try and enjoy both! Oh my gosh- I have never seen so many comments flagged for being off-topic or trolling!
If one can't come to an agreement on any supposed title (ex: xxx of all racers) then the most common logical agreement would be the review scores. Now I may add my 2 cents or get my comment lost in the dust, so far the only issue I have with T10 is their b*tchtalking against PD. Other than that I have no qualms with their quality of their title, credit is where credit is due. For Forza, it had 2 re-iterations that has continued to refine itself with much significance on it's latest title, it's fun, it has the Top Gear test track, the physics and graphics are an improvement, the online mode is fun. If any other game from other genre does this and gets a better score, I don't see why a racer like Forza should be an exception to the rule. If one wants to argue about semantics regarding both racer titles that we should not ignore the plights and aspects of the development time between them. Let's face it, Forza 2 was a brand new sim to the series, this can easily get a free pass of a high-score as the 360 was beginning to stretch it's muscles. However, in the case of GT5, there was just way too much content and a lot of those were not polished up (2D environments, AA, non-premiums). On top of that, it had to be released in a time were standards are a lot higher, thus retaining a medium to high score. Let's also not forget, that fun factor (whether be arcady or not) WILL dictate the reviewers *cough opinion on the matter. PD tends to ignore that of the casuals, and it's not so intuitively friendly menu system makes things more troublesome for new SIM lovers like me. I can see why the approach for the Forza franchise could be a lot more appealing. Unless of course, PD manages to put the fun (as in Demon's Souls fun) into it's franchise since realistic sims are known for their difficulty. It would be impossible to compete with the high rated scores no matter how realistic or great the graphics it will retain. From what I can observe the Forza franchise has turned itself into a commercial franchise, with expected multiple re-iterations within it's console's life cycle. Meanwhile, if one could observe the actions of PD, you can say that he simply wanted it to be the ONLY sim of this console gen. Quite understandable as racers being in the sports genre are the usually the same all over again. In my opinion, it's more likely he didn't want to leave GT5 in the dust if he does release GT6. I guess with that kind of individual mentality, he's only creating the game what can fit in his vision, and not merely competing to the highest tiers of scores like so many blockbuster titles this season. I think the GT fans of all should appreciate the hard work and dedication PD tries to put into it's franchise and not make it stagnant. Sure it may lack polish, and the constant updates that's keeping it alive to show that there's more fun for new sim lovers alike. However, many fans would just want to release a new re-iteration of GT6 presumably to shut many detractors up. While this may not be in the mindset of PD, it's totally understandable. The series have been viciously attacked not just by fans but by even Turn 10 themselves, I guess the fans just wanted a racer title just to show that competitors just need to learn a few leasons in humility as well as gaining respect from it's respective critics. It needs to show why it was so relevant back in the PSX days and how it shaped up the sim racing on consoles. I too would like to see GT6 do wonders just as how Uncharted 2 managed to place the PS3 in a higher pedestal than before. Again.. just my 2 cents. A pretty expensive one at that.
Wow! What a bloodbath in here! Good stuff though, N4G being N4G lol
What's with all the whining about comparing against GT5. To me the reviewer is suggesting that up to this point GT5 was the measuring stick, and now Forza 4 is setting a new bar.
2v1 was right why does everything xbox related in reviews have to be compared a PS3 game why can't xbox games make there own waves within reviews. Im sorry but reading reviews that all they do is compare gets sickening the only thing the game share is a common theme the games are not the same.
I don't see a problem with comparing 'Forza 4' to 'GT5.' For those who own both consoles and are on the fence about which to purchase, the comparison may help them decide which is worth their money. It shouldn't be a pissing contest, though it's sad to see that some people can't let great games be great games, no matter what platforms they're on. Do I own a 360? No. Do I begrudge 'Forza' its success? No. It's great to see solid titles being published in the industry. It's proof of the industry's strength in the face of the troubled global economic climate. As a gamer, I want the industry to thrive. That's what's most important to me. I hope the 'Forza' fans have as much fun with 'Forza 4' as I've had with 'GT5.'
