IFA 2006 :: Xbox 360 HD DVD drive on show with Toshiba

Ok, so the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive is something we've known about for a while and speculation is rife about whether an HD DVD drive will eventually replace the Xbox 360's standard internal DVD drive.

Now, normally, the partners who supply components for the Xbox 360 keep a fairly low profile but it seems that Toshiba is happy (and has been given permission) to let everyone know that it's making this add-on for the Xbox 360, which is why it was proudly displaying the drive on its own stand.

The thing is, if Microsoft does upgrade the Xbox 360 to include an HD DVD drive, those of us with a standard Xbox 360 are going to be left out in the cold. Hence the need for an external HD DVD drive.

"if Microsoft does upgrade the Xbox 360 to include an HD DVD drive, those of us with a standard Xbox 360 are going to be left out in the cold. Hence the need for an external HD DVD drive"... not really... you will still be able to use the 360 for the reason you bought it... which was to play games. This is like saying, the people who bought TVs without integrated DVD players will be left in the cold. uhhh.. maybe you don't want to pay extra for a damn integrated device since you know it will not perform better than a standalone device. Why do you think a blu-ray standalone drive from sony cost $1000 - $1500 and the PS3 is only $499.00 (cheapest sku with blu-ray) if the PS3 blu-ray has the same quality? I have a standalone dvd player to play movies; in my house and I forbid anyone in my house to put a movie in my 360. if the 360 comes with a internal hd-dvd drive I would still get the external drive. If the hd-dvd goes belly up at least I get to keep the 360.

But not in the very near future as it's a new add on and will make a few buckaroo's for MS.
However, down the road as it proves profitable, MS will replace the original DVD9 with the HD-DVD drive as a way to offer more bang for the buck. This doesn't mean that any new games will utilize it, in fact i'd say that like sony's blu ray, I think any additional content will just be a type of "the making of" or maybe some additional characters or levels that would be made available to us by way of XBOX live downloads. So we'll miss nothing. It'll be a great move. .. ."eventually":))

They'll never put the hd-dvd drive inside the 360, because of the cost. The present design allows the 360 to lower in manufacturing costs over time, so there's a possibility of MS breaking even on the console, or even make a small profit. That goes out the window if they throw in a hd-dvd drive.

They're much better off sticking with the external drive. One question about the drive...will it upscale normal dvd's?

"Everything" with time becomes lower in production cost as far as these electronic devices go. It would be no problem to eventually replace the dvd9 with the HD-DVD or offer that model as a platinum edition.

I don't know about you but DVD's at 480p look very good to me. I would rather just play HD-DVD and DVD at their specified resolutions, no upscaling, because I am sure that feature raises the price.
