The Failure of the Mainstream Beta

...big-name “marketing” betas are trying to do two opposite things at once and failing at both. They’re poor marketing tools because they rarely, if ever, present the product in question in a polished, appealing state, and they’re poor testing tools because they’re executed in such a way that they don’t provide adequate feedback for the developer.

Betas should remain closed until further notice.

Uninitiated people don't understand what they mean, their intended purpose or how they work, so keep it away from them. You ultimately want them to buy your game, so don't show them a diseased, half-baked version and expect them to know it's for testing purposes only. It will only harm your sales and your reputation.

Betas should only be open to series veterans and active community members, who show a clear understanding of the internal workings of the gameplay systems and have a will to improve the game based on their existing love for it.
