I think that as far as the portrayal of the horrors of war are concerned however, the more dangerous issue is the issue of the portrayal of the 'enemies' in our game (something he alluded to with reference to the Vietnamese).
Arabs,Russians and Asians- they are always portrayed as the 'bad guys'. Taking into consideration recent events, I'm surprised hardly any developers have had the courage to make a game that portrays the US as the instigators of war.
Remember the game Freedom Fighters where the USSR takes over the US? That was a great game but imagine a game where you play the role of a Middle Eastern civilian as the US army bombs your village and you have to fight back via guerilla warfare.
There are always two sides to a story. So why is it that, in videogames, we have been content with the same one side for all these years?
It's a hard subject to portray. Mainly because we as westerners do not understand or hardly see the other side of war. also, having a game in which you played as the "enemy" would be unpatriotic and as being a nation currently in war, it would come under serious flak by the media and the government. In the end it's all propaganda but you have to pay respects to people that lost their lives in war and that's not a joke.
Article was very good but i cant help but notice military shooters leave out every other allied nation except america.
its as if half these game devs are saying the americans are the only ones that have been in afghanistan and in and around the middle east in this present war in the middle wast and yes im looking squarely at YOU Medal of Honor & BF3.
Cant believe im saying this but at least COD recognised some element of the british forces (albeit in an unrealistic fashion) instead of "AMERICA F**K YEAH!" like every other military shooter out there.
