Ex-Legacy of Kain dev (now Naughty Dog) would love to see the franchise return

"Earlier this week, we here at TGL caught up with Richard Lemarchand, co-lead designer on Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and while our interview was very much focused on the beloved intrepid treasure rouge who is Nathan Drake and his latest adventure, we couldn’t help but pick Richard’s brains on another franchise he worked on long before he joined Naughty Dog. I’m talking about you Legacy of Kain. As it happens, he’d love to see a new LOK game get released at some point." (3DS, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, Naughty Dog, PC, PS Vita, PS2, PS3, Richard Lemarchand, Wii U, Xbox 360)

I think everyone who's played these games would love to see the franchise return. Or at the very least a HD collection.

Amen to that

The intro to the game was all time best intro.

" Tumbling, burning with white hot fire, I plunged into the depths of the abyss. Unspeakable pain, relentless agony, time ceased to exist. Only this torture and a deepening hatred of the hypocrisy that damned me to this hell. An eternity passed and my torment receded, bringing me back from the precipice of madness. The descent had destroyed me. Yet, I lived. "

I would prefer a HD collection rather than a total redo. The reason being is that voice talent, perhaps the best in a series ever, will never be reassembled. RIP Tony Jay (The Elder God).

while i agree wit u on this game having arguably the best VA in a VG, (i like Raziels VA over the Elder's) a full redo would be heaven sent.

when i first purchased a ps3 back in 06, i did so with the mindset that one day this dream'll be realized

EDIT: i jus saw one of ur vids, is that Raziels original VA? he sounds a tad bit different

The Dreamcast version of Soul Reaver was pretty killer.

If Naughty Dog makes a new Legacy of Kain game I think I may die with a smile on my face and a tent in my pants.

Naughty Dog taking the control of the legacy of kain series would be EPIC.

I think its time to go back to a lot of things. Medevil, Crash Bandicoot, Okami, Psychonauts, Viewtiful Joe, Dark Cloud, Strider, Bloody Roar,Battle Arena Toshinden, Rival Schools. So many great games begging for next gen sequels

Please, Naughty Dog. After Uncharted 3. Spot speaking, get to creatin!
Baka-akaB  +   1311d ago
WHat do you want them to do ? It's not even their property .

It's up to eidos/square now ... znd they kept having crystal dynamics do tomb raider instead :s (even if finally the new tomb raider looks interesting)

Soul Reaver /w current gen graphics would be wicked.
Baka-akaB  +   1311d ago
Yeah it's even more obvious looking at games like lord of Shadows and Darksiders

OMG I would LOVE for Naughty Dog to start up the LoK series again!

Please please buy the rights to the series! Amy Hennig is an amazing writer and I think she (and the ND crew) are the only ones who could do the series justice. We don't want another Blood Omen 2 on our hands.

The Legacy of Kain games have always been mind blowing in both story and gameplay department. Combine that with Naughty Dog's cinematic style of gaming, a shiny new HD engine and you got yourself a game well worth playing.

I'd rather have a new Jak.

The best gaming series I have ever played. The voice acting and story were superb. I'm always on youtube watching the cutscenes from the games.

Loved the first one when it came out...
A simple revenge fable; encountering your fallen brethren one by one and slaughtering them made for an epic yarn. Then the sequels came along and a load of paradoxical time travel nonsense got in the way and the magic was never really recaptured until the last quarter of Defiance.
Pozzle  +   1311d ago
The series has always had time travel though. Blood Omen was the first game in the series (not Soul Reaver) and Kain travels through time in that game to kill both King William (who he mentions in SR2) and later Mobeus. That's why he became so obsessed with time travel in the later games. He screwed around with Nosgoth's history in the first game, and has been trying to fix it ever since.
Acquiescence  +   1311d ago
That's a seperate series though...
I've no interest in Blood Omen nor its sequel. I'm dismayed at how the Soul Reaver series lost its way by intergrating its narrative more and more with Blood Omen when the first one was all about the awesomeness of Raziel.
Baka-akaB  +   1311d ago
Er not really . With SR 1-2 actually being at core a single game cut into two halves , it was always a part of the Legacy of Kain . Time travel was always a part of it along with some big elements of blood omen ...

You can't have Kain , locations and elemnts of blood omen woven directly into the first game , and they decide it got no real ties just because Raziel was the focus in Soul reaver 1 .

I'm not disputing that Soul Reaver as a whole had ties with Legacy Of Kain; it did. I'm just saying that it should have had minimal ties like the first game. When the budget ran out for the first Soul Reaver it ended abruptly, yet conveniently, at a time when the time travel crap was not introduced yet. LOK: Soul Reaver had a simple premise from which it benefitted and afterwards the plot became so convoluted that I lost all interest.
Hozi  +   1311d ago
yes please!...but i would prefer a sequel in the series over a remake. the past games are brilliant the way they are. except for some cam. angles.

I remember being 7 years old and not knowing how to kill the enemies. I though they were immortal so i just gave up and let my older cousin play.

I don't know. I would love another one, but I don't trust any game companies anymore. I don't wanna get my hopes up only to hear the new LoK will be a fps with cover system and online multiplayer. T_T

I love the story, atmosphere and mythos. But the actual gameplay quality is mediocre. People look back with nostalgia forgetting the painful block puzzles, repetitive combat and sometimes hellish lack of direction present in some of these titles.
Baka-akaB  +   1311d ago
Not reeally a matter of nostalgia . Give me its block puzzle and gameplay any day over that stupid QTE trend .

A modern reboot of this series would be cool. The older games haven't aged too well, but aren't bad.

Amy Hennig also directed Soul Reaver
you've got the team and the talen now DO IT Naughty Dog!!!

I'd buy an HD collection remake of these games. It was actually Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver on the Dreamcast back in 1999 that got me back into gaming since I'd sort of fallen in love with mary jane and partying too much back then.

I agree with several other posts. Graphics, story and voice acting were spectacular for its time, I still don't think anything has equaled that entrance to Soul Reaver. But gameplay was mediocre at best, moreso in Soul Reaver 2, though it was more visceral and was redeemed in my opinion in Defiance.

I'm pretty sure they finished everything up though in Defiance. I haven't played it in a few years so I don't remember fully the ending sans the defeat of the last boss, but I think the story of Nosgoth pretty much ended. I'll have to check it back out again. An HD compilation with every game including the Blood Omen's would be fantastic. I never buy games new. I'd buy that one new.
