Top Five Reasons Dark Souls Will Eat Skyrim's Face

Casey Lynch writes:We get it. Everyone loves Skyrim. We do too.

But there's another RPG experience that will steamroll into stores in a few weeks, one that will just might change the industry and the way we look at our favorite pastime. Skyrim's getting all the attention, it will probably grab most of the sales, but there's one game that has it beat in all kinds of areas. We're talking about Dark Souls.

They both just can't do well?

I mean I really doubt Fromsoft is looking to kill Skyrim. And I doubt that the Elder Scroll guys even have DS on their radar.

OtherWhiteMeat4596d ago

I know I'm buying both........so it's a double win for me.

rezzah4596d ago

lol how do you get a disagree for wanting to buy both?

BTW it is the best option to pick, getting both games equal the most fun. Rather than nitpicking about which would be the better to buy.

Dacapn4596d ago

It was a really hard choice for me, but I decided on Dark Souls for this holiday season, though I plan on getting both. I figure Skyrim will be released with a ton of bugs like all Bethesda games, then after a few patches there will probably be some sort of game of the year edition with all the DLC already included for the same price. By then, I will have the time to dive in.

ShoryukenII4595d ago

Dacapn has got the right idea. I'm doing the same. Dark Souls is coming out earlier and will hold me off until Battlefield 3 while also letting me take advantage of long weekends. I've never played an Elder Scrolls game but I know Demon's Souls and I love it.

MsclMexican4595d ago

Im not getting Dark Souls because I hate getting my ass kicked lol

EVILDEAD3604595d ago

Even IGN...jumped in on the dumb comparisons between the two. Why hate on the beast that is Skyrim just to praise Dark Souls.

Completely unnecessary in this case. RPG fans should jump for joy that we have two realeases of this stature back to back.

Skyrim isn't just going to get sales because it's some random rpg, its a franchise we've been waiting for 5 years to play again.

I salute both developers and can't wait to lose my life playing both games this fall and winter.

Bigpappy4595d ago

This is a weak effort to try to talk-up a decent Action RPG and try to act like it is even in the same league as SKYRIM.

Before you all start crying over my comment. Please explain how the game would prove to will "Eat Skyrim's Face". Atleast the writer admits it would sell nearly as well. With that one out of the way, please tell me where this game can compete with Skyrim. Please don't tell me because the battle are difficult and you die alot. When did that become a desired feature in an RPG.
Get serious folks. I wish the game well and how you all have the time of your life with it, but comparing it to skyrim is just stupid and will only make the gullible amound us run out there and buy a game that is nothing like Skyrim and end up being sorely dissapointed and short $60.
From all accounts, this seem more of a nitch game that mainstream.

BeOneWithTheGun4595d ago

Exactly. Who cares which sells more? They are shaping up to be fabulous games; in-depth, long, great art design and game play. I am getting DS for my PS3 and Skyrim for my 360. That way, once one console has been on for 8 hours and is getting warm, I can jump over and play the other game.

guitarded774595d ago

@Bigpappy
You sound awful butt-hurt... did Demon's Souls hurt you? People often say "you're entitled to you opinion", but you're just typing to feel important. Like you have a legitimate argument. Well, you don't. Sure 'The Elder Scrolls' is a great franchise (I pre-ordered Skyrim), but so is Souls... and with a one console outing that almost never made it to the States or the EU, it proved that it's greatness could sell and sell well. With the series (spiritual successor... whatever) making it's way to both HD consoles, it is proving to be a great franchise.

LastDance4595d ago

Because Demon's Souls had the best hand to hand combat of any fantasy RPG? Bethesda will have to do a lot better than merely improve on Oblivion combat.

I love both games in different ways and am getting both just FYI!

humbleopinion4595d ago

@LastDance
Try The Witcher 2. Although I myself prefer the tactical games like Dragon age, the hand combat system in The Witcher is way better than any competing game in the genre.

frostypants4595d ago (Edited 4595d ago )

Both games are worthy of gamers' money, but let's be honest here...Bethesda has one of the WORST reputations in the industry in terms of releasing glitchy games. Furthermore, for my part I'm a little bit bored of the Bethesda RPG formula, which has felt fundamentally the same for over 15 years. The more I hear about Skyrim, the more it sounds like more of the same.

No one can argue that Dark Souls isn't the more innovative game, or that it won't be a cleaner/less glitchy release version. For those reasons Dark Souls is my pick of the two (if I had to pick). I'd wager that most people who have played the predecessors of both of these games would agree.

Ser4595d ago (Edited 4595d ago )

@Bigpappy

You REALLY don't like Dark Souls, do ya, guy?

Every Skyrim vs Dark Souls article I see, you're in there just bad mouthing Dark Souls.

Guess what? I'm more excited for Dark Souls at this point. Dark Souls is something NEW and FRESH. I still love Skyrim, heck, my PS3 is sporting a Skyrim skin at the moment, but Dark Souls gets massive love for not being like everyone else.

Demon's Souls was SO GREAT that it warranted a US and EU release. Not too many new IPs can muster that type of warm reception nowadays. Just get over it - Dark Souls will be amazing.

Drab4595d ago

7 diagree for buying both lol don't u love the internet:p

jeseth4595d ago

Funny Title to the article.

Both games are going to kick a$$ though . ...

I wish they spread these releases out some. Rage, Dark Souls, Payday all on the same day

evrfighter4596d ago (Edited 4596d ago )

skyrim will be eating the rpg sales unfortunately. I'd like to try out this title but xmas is right around the corner so I've got the budget for only 2 titles this fall and bf3 is already pre-ordered

probably wait for this one to hit the bargain bin or buy it used off someone

Gray-Fox-Type04595d ago

Skyrim then dark souls from the bargain bin.

beavis4play4595d ago

it's the opposite for me - dark souls on day1 and skyrim sometime next year for 20 dollars.

MAULxx4595d ago

Skyrim & maybe Dark Souls from the bargin bin.

Truthfully, I don't see what the big deal is about Dark Souls. I got Demon Souls & maybe played it three times. There's no story worth anything so your pretty much playing just for the gameplay.
How Demon or Dark Souls is anywhere close to the level of skyrim or even Oblivion is beyond me.

Skyrim day 1 & DS... wait & see.

Canary4595d ago

They're not really in the same genre, but as is usually the case, people are comparing a multi-plat to an exclusive--fanboys will ALWAYS tout the superiority of the exclusive to the multiplat, long before either games release. Sometimes these irrational assumptions prove true (Prototype v. Infamous) and sometimes they very, very much do not.

ksense4595d ago

both are multiplat....

Anderson84595d ago

they're both action rpg's with open worlds.. i'd say they are in the same genre

wsoutlaw874595d ago

I cant say I disagree with any of the points of this article. Demons souls is in my top 5 and dark souls is going in my ps3 as soon as possible. However that doesn't mean skyrim isnt worth buying also.

ProperFunked4595d ago

right!! the damn story title is pure flame bait. im surprised its on an ign website.

zeddy4595d ago

if you want a challenge get dark souls, if you want to kick back n relax get skyrim

HaVoK3084595d ago

Both do well? You mean it's possible to enjoy more than one great game? We don't have to rank our gaming experiences with a number? We are capable of buying more than one great game? Say it ain't so! That makes too much sense. Surely nobody is that smart.

*end sarcasm*

Nothing more than a troll article. Like all gaming sites these days they know exactly what to say to get the fanboys to blow up their site. Traffic generating rhetoric is all it is. Pathetic it is still so successful. The fanboys will comment in fits of rage and those responsible will never read it nor respond. They will simply sit back and laugh at the fools while counting their money.

I wonder if IGN will remember this article when they are hanging off of Todd Howard's ball sack and kissing his ass for an interview and exclusives.

Perhaps someday gamers will actually be smart enough to realize what all these gaming sites are doing. They are all garbage. IGN, Joystiq, Gametrailers, Destructoid, Game Pro, ect. They all prey on the ignorant gamers to generate revenue through advertising.

Blaine4595d ago

Agreed.

But to the discerning, informed gamer, this isn't a bad thing. I avoid flamebait articles (which, like you say, generate revenue for the sites) and get right to the good stuff: the news and trailers. Without the fanboys going rabid on the troll articles, we probably wouldn't have as much of the good stuff either.

(Once in a while I do like to read the rabid comments though! Like this article. And I have to say, the N4G community is actually a lot more grown-up about this than IGN's community. They are really butt-hurt!)

I know we all need to vent once in a while, but we just need to keep on sucking it up and ignoring the fanboys and trolls, and stick to the good stuff.

HaVoK3084594d ago (Edited 4594d ago )

@Blaine

That's certainly a fair point.

I will never understand the mentality of a fanboy though. The level of ignorance is baffling. It is hard for me to believe some are so incredibly stupid.

For me, it's rather simple. I like to play great games. I realize in order for me to do so I need to game on more than one platform. I own and game on all current gen platforms. This is commonsense to me. Some rather talk about games rather then actually play them. The same people fail to understand that games such Uncharted and Gears of War can co-exist and be equally good and equally enjoyed. The same people who fail to realize that an opinion is not an absolute truth. The same people who fail to realize that there is no right or wrong review. There is no such thing as an objective game review free of personal bias. It is impossible to review a game objectively. They will always be subjected to the authors personal bias.

As I said, it's all rather simple to me. Thankfully, fanboys are a small group. An obnoxiously loud group, but small group nonetheless.

Like you said...fanboys drive content. Without their stupidity there would probably be a lot less gaming websites. So, at the very least they are keeping people employed. Being employed...something I'm sure most fanboys know nothing about.

MEsoJD4595d ago

Dark Souls: PS3 (For the gameplay)

Skyrim: PC (For the mods)

I have reasons and recommend platforms. I'm fucking set.

jc485734596d ago (Edited 4596d ago )

Remember back then, sites were comparing Demon's Souls with Dragon Age Origins. This one is a really tough comparison. I would choose Dark Souls over Skyrim mainly because I prefer the challenge. Yea, I'm prepared to die.

Edit: I guess the main question is, how could Skyrim players not touch on Dark Souls? They should.

SweatyFlorida4596d ago

Yah I prefer Dark Souls dark fantasy setting over Skyrim's, well, stuff... I used to have D&D monster manuals when I was young and thought that those monsters and dungeon crawling was so awesome, so Dark Souls is like the physical being of those books and that type of play style (go into a dungeon and fight unique monsters)

I also prefer Dark souls/DS fighting gameplay over Skyrim. Skyrim (or any elder scrolls) just lack that impact when fighting :/

No doubt both games will be great, but I guess it's proper to compare the biggest RPG's this Fall. The fact that Skyrim get's all the western attention is probably causing unnecessary disputes between the two hence the article made by IGN along with the biased comments in that article. Truly any fan of RPG or fantasy will surely get both.

jc485734596d ago

I think is worth checking out Dark Souls especially if you're a big fan of Skyrim.

ryhanon4595d ago

I'm picking up both on release as I'm a big fan of both franchises, but I agree with you regarding Dark Souls fighting mechanics.

Obviously Dark Souls depends on the strength of the fighting mechanic more than The Elder Scrolls games do, but if Skyrim's fighting mechanic is anything like Oblivion (I know it has supposedly been overhauled, but the videos I've seen so far, while they look better, the mechanics seem very similar) it's going to be a bit of a weak point for the game. I really think Bethesda could learn a thing or two from Dark Souls / Demons Souls about how to handle melee combat.

It's a shame too, because other than the melee combat, Oblivion had very few significant flaws in terms of mechanics in my opinion.

SweatyFlorida4595d ago

@Ryhanon yah that was my only grief with Skyrim so far. But Skyrim does excel at things that Dark Souls isn't able to do (I've seen quiet a few videos so far) such as Open world-ness, though you'll do a lot of walking/running without constant action, it does give it that extra room to play in and a breather between fighting.

The whole good and bad player characteristic also adds a lot of fun and just screwing around whereas Dark Souls you'll have to be on your toes the whole time. NPC's and towns are also great interactions for taking a break from hack-and-slashing.

So I say both can learn from each other in various aspects, though it's those differences that separate the two which is truly good as if they were more or less the same, then their be no point in buying both. So I'm glad they both have their unique qualities :)

Baka-akaB4596d ago (Edited 4596d ago )

Dear god they dont even release at the same time , and if you've the means and truly love the genre , you'll just get both

Enmson4596d ago

Games can EAT each other? :O

then i'm not putting these games in the same room

Dovahkiin4596d ago

I know my xbox ate a disc of mine once, if that counts?

RyuCloudStrife4596d ago

They both are great IMO I cannot choose, I know I will be playing soo much :)

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

anast18d ago

I tried, but it's a poorly made game that insults its customers.

lucian22918d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Nittdarko18d ago

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave18d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan18d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave18d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
