RipTen: It’s no secret that Battlefield 3 will take a serious rig to take full advantage of on PC, but a new study released shows that a serious percentage of PC gamers will need to upgrade in order to do it.
I don't need to upgrade...
Me either. Hi-5 for being in the top 15%!
Hi-5! I'm good to go with a GTX 580 and an i5 2500k.
ditto! i7-950 2 GTX 560 Ti's in SLI baby! =D
Me either. I'm good to go but I just got done building a gaming rig a month ago so I will see how these guys do with BF3. I think they should be able handle the game at max setting with smooth frame rates.
If I remember correctly Battlefield 2 was another that helped push next-gen on pc. It was the first AAA title that required 2gb of ram in ur pc. There were many a forum topic and benchmark comparisons between 1gb and 2gb from what I remember. DICE loves their tech and I'm glad they do.
@Brutallhonest......im new to all this pc upgradeing 5hit? what the h3ll's that?
Me too, I built this PC 2 years ago this week so happy birthday to my PC I know i can run this game with the setting maxed out, not at a solid 60fps it runs at 45-60fps
what i dislike from pc gaming is that i have to upgrade quite often sometimes only in a few months with console i don't need to upgrade for a few years
I have no idea how well my GTX 470 MSI will run this game.. (8GB DDr3 RAM, Quad core...) I'll probably be getting for PS3 anyway, but if anyone has an idea how well it will run on the aforementioned card there will be bubs for you....
Looks Like I Indeed CAN RUN IT. Even Recommended. :) http://img8.imageshack.us/i... @ Glorious Dawn Go to canyourunit and allow it to test for you. From experience a 470 Should do just fine.
@onyoursistersback That is 2 EVGA GTX 590 Classifieds in the image of my post. 7 disagrees for my reply. Gotta luv N4G. SMH
@ hard joe ...And you actually have a gaming PC or are you just insinuating without any experience that this is what occurs. I upgraded my computer a year and a half ago and I'm still good to go with BF3 max settings, and for not that much over what a brand new console would cost (at the beginning of a generation. Lol, plus in a few years, I'll probably be able to emulate those consoles anyway...in a few more years at least!
Recommended System Requirements OS: WINDOWS 7 64-BIT PROCESSOR: QUAD-CORE CPU MEMORY: 4 GB HARD DRIVE: 20 GB GRAPHICS CARD: DIRECTX 11 COMPATIBLE WITH 1024 MB RAM (NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 560 OR ATI RADEON 6950) my PC specs WINDOWS 7 64-BIT HOME PROCESSOR: intel i5 650 @ 3.10GHZ MEMORY: 4 GB HARD DRIVE: 1 TB GRAPHICS CARD: GTX 560 TI factory OC @ 950 i think im in the clear i can run this on high not sure about MAX tho
Here's your upgrade http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.h... A 470 should be grand
Bah, the headline on N4G is wrong- to grab views no doubt. HAVE to upgrade? The article says want. So recommended is MANDATORY now to run this game? Since when? What a load of inflammatory BS i must say. Please adjust the headline. If you meet minimum specs, you have a faster PC than the consoles and it'll automatically look better than the consoles. It still make much more sense to buy on PC in that case. You don't NEED to meet recommended, but if you do, that will mean you should be able to max it or get close to that and so it'll look like it does in the shots...
Same :D my PC is brand spanking new!
Guess I'll get the PS3 version then. Not gonna spend over 300$ on a GPU (that's another PS3 god dammit).
-i5 2500k @4.9mhz(full load=75-80C with corsair h100 ...on the lowest fan speed.) -8gb(2x4) corsair vengence -2x 120gb ocz vertex3 maxiops -msi gtx580 lightning @975mhz -corsair hx750 (750w psu) -corsair 600t white SE case 3dmark11 score=7680 ...i think im good to go.
My immediate thought for this was "Oh snap" then I saw the pic......great
Wow...marked trolling and lose a bubble for that? What bulls**t. I quoted Substance101's post and added "(on 15% of current systems)" As the article suggested. ......smh
6950 mod to be 6970! crysis 2 dx11 40-50fps!
why the hell i got 4 disagrees is beyond me
That's a Got Dam Lie!!! cause many can run BF3 PC quit nice on minimum or slightly below recommended settings. But remember BF3 will not run on a DX9 graphics card or on Windows XP. I hate PC upgrade propaganda articles cause they only incite the false rumors of having to upgrade every other game release. just go here to see if your PC meets the minimum or recommended Specs: http://sites.amd.com/us/gam... or here if it's up (was down due to Everyone checking the new BF3 specs) http://www.systemrequiremen...
Do you know the number of people still using Windows XP? More then you would imagine! And add that to the number of people that still have DX9 graphics cards. Also your link http://sites.amd.com/us/gam... doesn't even have BF3 as an option to check for compatibility.
It's just the headline that is twisting it. It's more along the lines of people wanting to upgrade to max out BF3 rather than simply play it. They just based it off the recommended specs too, instead of the minimum one.
@ Legion 41% of Steam users are using Windows 7 64bit with only 18% using Xp and XP is declining at a rate of 1% per month although many like myself dual boot Win7 and Xp which may lead to Xp being higher than it should. and both sites listed have battlefield 3 on there. It's in alphabetical order so i don't know if that's hindering your search for it. It's right under Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike
Dice said that they were being generous with the specs so that the game would run completely smoothly. Honestly 90% of dx11 rigs will be able to play this game.
@Legion http://store.steampowered.c... Windows 7 64 bit 43.42% Windows XP 32 bit 19.28% Windows Vista 64 bit 13.49% Windows Vista 32 bit 12.50% Windows 7 9.97% Windows XP 64 bit 1.02% Windows 2003 64 bit 0.22% Other 0.09% DX10/11 cards 78.72% DX9 and below 21.28% As you can see the article is full of it. The article is saying 85% would need to upgrade to meet the RECOMMEND specs, NOT the minimum. BF3 has one of the most demanding recommended specs I have seen. Now of course, "recommended" is a subjective term. Does recommended me Max settings 1080P and 60FPS? Does it mean 30FPS? Does it mean only "high" settings 1080P and 60FPS? or 30FPS? Only time will tell, but no way in hell 85% of PC gamers will NEED to upgrade to play. Lame "article".
Ati it says i don't meet medium requirements. It does not look like it accepts 2 x HD6850 seems like it only picked up one as thats more powerful than a 6950 So it doesn't detect my crossfire but says i have: Video RAM = 3.7 GB
A ridiculous number of people are still on xp. You can't deny that. Even I still do. With needing windows 7, to run BF3 would cost me at least $500. Or I can buy it for $60. Why would the several million people like me choose that $500 route?
Lets put it this way, no one who was ever actually considering getting BF3 for PC is still running Win XP or has a DX9 only graphics card. Honestly if anyone is running XP or only a DX9 gpu (bear in mind DX10 graphics cards have been around since 2006 and an 8800gt will cost you about £10 these days), then they are not serious about gaming on PC.
Well... I do want to play it using full specs but the best quality possible is not exactly A MUST for me, so I don't have to upgrade in order to play this game on my PC.
Thats what a lot of console guys don't understand, you don't need to upgrade your pc to play the game. You may need to upgrade it to run at max detail, but that is optional.
Wanna share 1 of those cards Brutallyhonest ... Btw how much did you pay 4 those cards..., I see the have the pro cooler master case too.... someone has $$$$$$$$
I bet he could remove 3 and not even notice a drop is framerates. 4 x 590s is crazy and totally not needed.
@bum I think he only has 2, I think the second pic is just a close up. Either way, 2 590's is still overkill lol, do want.
i can recomend these. i own 2. but 2 not needed. what i love about these cards unlike many other brands out there, Not only is it quiet but most importantly awfully cool. Mine never goes above 40'c full load seriously cpud hwmonitor. http://www.ebay.com/itm/KFA... mine the one with twin fan. Heatsink and heat pipes with 2 low profile fans.
Just like to say my 2008 gaming rig has dx11 with vista and i don't need to upgrade but because of origin i will never touch this game even on consoles.
My PC is ready to run BF3 maxed out. But i'm really worried weather my PC can handle Rage.
don't be, it's essentially a console game and a very well optimised one at that which Carmack regrets but anyway the system requirements aren't that high Minimum: OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7 Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo or Equivalent AMD Memory: 2GB Hard Disk Space: 25GB Video Card: GeForce 8800, Radeon HD 4200 Recommended: OS: Win XP SP3, Vista, Win 7 Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad or Equivalent AMD Memory: 4GB Hard Disk Space: 25GB Video Card: GeForce 9800 GTX, ATI Radeon HD 5550
DICE has truly catered to the PC fanbase. Something that is not very pleasant amongst devs and most console gamers. They're trying to bring back the awesomeness what the PC is capable of, something, most developers (even the PC-based Crytek) was shy to do. This of course may affect the sales an image, but I applaud them for doing something like this especially in the a very highly competitive gaming market this gen. I still don't approve of origins though. -End statement
DICE is trying to push forward tech that consoles have been holding them back with. I don't see why console gamers would be displeased w/ that. They r still getting the game. Will it b better on PC, of course but at least thr getting it. PC has had zillions of crappy console ports were the developer doesn't even care about the PC..old school graphics engines, lack of multiplayer support; particularly 2K w/ thr sports games and EA w/ thr sports games.
I dont need a freakin update! What i'm wondering is how the console owners with their 2005 tech are going to be running this game. how about you make an article about that.
i7 2600k and GTX 580 no need to upgrade.
I don't need to upgrade either thankfully :) Just bought a new rig though so that could have something to do with it :P
I will have to upgrade to run it on Recommended Settings. The only thing really holding me back is my CPU which is dual-core: CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 560BE Dual Core CPU Black Edition It can be unlocked to Quad Core but I have no idea how to do it :(
I can't remember exactly what you needed to do to unlock it, but you have to have a certain type of motherboard with a certain type of feature. And I don't think every 560BE can be unlocked. EDIT:This might help you out - http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Cheers Kramun! Appreciate it!
So many PC geeks in this article. :/
well duh its a pc article
Do you guys really think that people who DO need to upgrade frequent this website? Probably not.
I do, I am upgrading from a Pentium D 2.8 to i5 2500k based motherboard. I have a GTX 560ti but in my old MB it is not enough.
i7-2600k + gtx 580 dcu II
i7-980X + 2x HD6990s + GTX460 for physX
I just ordered a ASUS z58 Pro v board to put my GTX 560ti, i5 2500k, and 8 megs of DDR3 1600 RAM in. I should be fine. If not then I'll just buy another GTX 560ti and run SLI.
Seriously, the only people who matter already meet the recommended specs. The rest are probably people with Steam accounts just for the hell of it (as in they do not game on their PC). Anyway, who cares? I meet recommended specs just fine xD
The game really is demanding but I'm willing to use BF3 to jump into hardcore PC gaming in general.
Welcome! to the master race
But where are the cookies?
Cookies? that was on your peasant life, we only have ambrosia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
Recommended is to play the game at pretty high graphics with a good framerate, you don't need anywhere near that to play at low/medium graphics with 30 FPS, which I'm 'assuming' will be what the PS3/360 will look like. So people don't really have to upgrade, only if they want it to look the best as possible which I'm assuming a lot of people won't care to much about.
Ya i think they talking about max graphics, then yes but almost all pc gamers will be able to play it. 90% of steam users have a dx10 and dx11 cards. Tho i do think were going to see a lot of people upgrade. http://store.steampowered.c...
so you dont care about max settings, just beating consoles for some reason
I was stating that it will look like consoles, which is still good. My PC will be close to maxing it out, I was just stating a point. And no, I do not care about beating consoles. I own all 3 consoles and a PC and I play whatever I like on them, I enjoy good graphics but I will play games with crap graphics as long as they are fun.
A PC costs more than the consoles, if the PC looks the same as console and not better, you are doing PC gaming wrong somehow. The gap between console and the hardware needed to play BF3 max is HUGE, the RAM alone is 10x more (console=512MB, PC=4BG sys+1GB vram) Even if the PC runs the game halfway between the console quality and PC's max quality, it still a good leap forward in quality.
I meet recommended but wonder how good that will really be. May need to finally over clock my i-920. I have a 570.
Touche Battlefield. Touche. And P.S. I have no problem with upgrading. I can run the game at medium (during alpha), but I
