Rein: Work on 360's Unreal Tournament III just on hold

Joystiq had a spot of confusion yesterday when Epic's Mark Rein was quoted in one piece as saying work hadn't started on the Unreal Tournament III 360 version. Meanwhile, another site was reporting that they'd already played it on 360. Now, Rein has explained to Joystiq that it's not that work on the 360 version hasn't started yet, it's just that it's on hold.

"What I probably should have said was 'start working on it again.' We had the game up and running on all three platforms up until last spring. In fact Official Xbox Magazine came out and played the game for a great cover story they did on it. We stopped working on the 360 version so we could concentrate our efforts on shipping the various PC and PS3 versions. Once we get those out of the way, and take some time to enjoy the holidays with our friends and families, we'll start working on the 360 version again. There's still a decent bit of work to do. For example we have simple LAN play but no Xbox Live implementation yet and we need to work with Microsoft to figure out how to accommodate mods on their platform."

For all the Sony trolls. Looks like Sony's attempt for a timed exclusive failed.

Lucreto4046d ago

Well they got them to stop development of the 360 and the exclusive window will be there until it is released sometime during the summer

paul_war4046d ago

How do you mean?

What I got from it was they will be releasing the PS3 version this year & then starting work again on the 360 version sometime next year. Sorry, but to me that sounds like a timed exclusive.

Killjoy30004046d ago

wtf are you talking about thats considered a timed exclusive...JUST LIKE BIOSHOCK HEHEH

Its so obvious Sony payed Epic to stop the Xbox 360 development of UT III. They were hoping for a November release for both PS3 and PC versions, but Epic failed and PS3 version will now be released sometime in 2008, along with the Xbox 360 version. Still, I don't mind for it to come later, lots of other great games are upcoming.

Lucreto4046d ago (Edited 4046d ago )

It won't delay the PS3 version that long. If anything it will push the 360 version back until the PS3 version is out.

@1.6 It is still possible for it to come this year but we need to wait and see. Well at least I will be getting Haze and Orange box before Christmas.

Bleyd4046d ago

when did the PS3 version get delayed to 2008? I thought it was still slated to come out before Christmas.

Dante82054046d ago

they arent going to start working on it until you know how long its gonns take for this port to come out? end of 08. atleast.

Hopefully they'll release the PS3 version BEFORE they enjoy their holidays w/friends & family...sometime in December?!

Haha good observation and good point made. Sadly, I for one will not get this game because of internet restrictions (in South Africa we pay about $40 for 192 internet per mont). Is there any singleplayer signifigance to this game?

Douchebaggery4046d ago

There is supposed to be a solid singleplayer campaign, I don't no if it supports local multiplayer but UT has always had great bots.

andy0014046d ago

I think it is a good decision, as the Halo 3, Call of Duty, Orange Box games will be satisfying most of the target market for UTIII, not to mention Mass Effect.

The main delay seems to have been because of the user generated content Epic want to implement and Microsoft's unwillingness to do so.

They have a better chance of selling more if they wait until Easter or something when 360 owners will be wanting a new FPS to play.

riqued4046d ago

And 360 may get mods, thats worth the wait right?

andy0014046d ago

It will be interesting to see whether the mods on the PS3 version are that popular, because I must admit, I like UT but never really bothered with them, and it will be interesting to see how flexible MS will be with Epic in implementing them.

But yes, its always worth the wait if a. the game is improved and is the best it can be and b. if you have something to play in the meanwhile, which 360 owners do.

Darrius Cole4046d ago

Free, downloadable, playable, content on Xbox live will never happen. Well, never say never, but it is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY. If that is what the hold up is over then the 360 may never see Unreal Tournament # 3.

But if it does it will be without the free mods.

fredy4046d ago

I mean they have the PS3/PC release and the holidays to enjoy families.

Plus they need to sort the Mods BS with MS.

Plus if the PC version is done how easy will it be to finish theXbox 360 version?

That was the whole point of keeping the Xbox 360's architecture close to the PC. Easy port or whatever you wanna call it unlike the PS3.

TheMART4046d ago

I think MS will give some major support to UT3 now that the PS3 gets it first to get it soonish in 2008. I bet even at last around march/april with mods and all.

MS just can't afford to stay out on the franchise. If you're a diehard UT3 fan and you can't wait for the 360 version and your PC isn't strong enough to run it properly it's simple buy a PS3 then.

Not my game though. I prefer Gears of War, with having the option to take cover, no jumping clowns around and a normal humanly speed.

mighty_douche4046d ago

a sensible comment from you? im shocked.

but march/april i very much doubt, 1 because i cant see them getting it done by then and 2 releasing it opposite MGS4?

TheMART4046d ago

Well if the 360 version is already far in its proces (it might even been further in development on the 360 then on the PS3 at that time, but problems with mods only) it can be done in 3 to 4 months for sure. If MS give them the support they need on the mods, because implementing live system into the game won't be so hard (Gears of War runs on the same engine and I bet they can get the system up and running in no time).

And what has MGS4 to do with it on the PS3? 360 fans will buy UT3 anyhow, MGS4 will probably get its 360 version around Holidays 2008.
