Why Japan hates first person shooters

GameCentral reports on all of Sega's new games from the Tokyo Game Show, and also sits down for an interview with Yakuza creator Toshihiro Nagoshi.

Cause most FPS characters are not big eyed girls wearing short skirts & carrying big swords.

Stereotypes.. really?

Because they're usually war games with limited depth in story, in their eyes(for the west war games are grounded in reality when it comes to drama) On the other hand what Japanese gamer wants to play games like Battlefield 1943?

Japan/FF13=Super natural magical powers with over the top drama and exaggerated personal growth stories.

NA/Halo=Super solder engineered by science fighting space beings although fantasic seems grounded in reality yet still feeds the fantasy needs of people. The west tends to like more grounded ideas that seem just out of reach but familiar

One group of people have suppressed childhoods having little time to do much but prepare for adult life so their entertainment is child-like to other people. They live what they missed out on in life through this medium.

The other group have long childhoods and don't take things so seriously, so Japanese style entertainment seems child-like to most people in the west excluding children and fans. Westerners tend to like things more mature due to having compromised adult imagination hense grounded tastes. Western kids want to be like the adults and do what adults do and is the reason just as many kids play FPS as adults on western consoles.

Which is ironic, because Western adults tend to be far more childish than their Japanese counterparts.

Do you remember how the Japanese react to the earthquake back in March?

Now fast forward to May and look at how the Americans reacted to Osama Bin Laden's death.

Are you honestly trying to tell me that Americans are more mature?

rjdofu2522d ago (Edited 2522d ago )

You've got it backward dude.

When we're looking for a game rich in story & varieties in gameplay & characters, we look for Japanese RPG or TPS, not Western FPS which 80% of the time is about war (American vs ...) with generic story, generic character & generic dialogue (I'm a super sodier, I can achieve a feat all by myself, I have to protect the WORLD blablabla...).

You know why Western kids like FPS? Because it's simple, easy to pick up, easy to play & easy to brag about it. Picking up a gun then running around shooting people; come on, even a child can do that. Of course they don't want to process/understand the complicated mechanics of an RPG. I'm wondering how old are you that you can make such an ignorant claim (about the maturity BS).

Edit: Don't even use FFXIII to represent the Japanese gaming (that abomination of a legend series will not show anything), use MGS series instead.

Japan hates FPS because FPS typically doesn't have enough tentacles.

add a gun to a game and americans will eat it up

death2smoochie2523d ago

...Add young girls with big breasts and a long sword and and name it any form of Monster Hunter and the Japanese market will go postal for it...

NarooN2522d ago

Uh, yeah, 'cause guns are badass. Rather use a gun than some 9,000 ft. long sword.

Stealth2k2523d ago

The question is irrelevant.

imoutofthecontest2523d ago (Edited 2523d ago )

I agree.
I love how it's obvious that the website already had this conclusion in mind and shoved it on the Sega guy.
GC: Why do you think Japanese audiences and developers have stopped being interested in shoot 'em-ups?

GC: Yes, shooters in general but also first person shooters specifically? We still don't understand why Japanese people don't like them.

GC: Well they gave up pretty quickly, it's hard to think of any examples of them even trying.

GC: But why do Japanese gamers not like first person shooters? Even if the West makes better games they still don't like those. Is it just because Japanese companies aren't making them or is it the story and linearity issue you mentioned?

I mean ho-lee crap, dudes. The genre was invented and perfected in the West. The West makes better FPS games and sells more of them, the East makes better turn-based RPGs and sells more of them. Move on?

Japanese consumers have totally different tastes in games than most other regions. Especially Europe and North America.
It's another reason why the Japanese gaming market has seen such a huge decline in the past years and North America and certain European nations pulling ahead.
