Dead Island review - Gamedot

"Dead Island was a fantastic idea but sadly does not deliver. Features of the game can be found elsewhere and in better form, meaning Dead Island leaves a feeling of disappointment that you only get when it throws it down during your two week holiday to Majorca..." (Dead Island, PC, PS3, Xbox 360) 5/10

While I think 5/10 is a bit harsh, I think the combat wasn't very polished at all.

For fear of looking like a wanker, I'm very good at most games and usually am very quick to learn a new game and analyse my performance as I'm playing.

But in Dead Island I seem to die more often then I should. Because of the limited range and the sluggish movement of the character, it's very hard to come out of a 1 vs 3 fight flawlessly.

Before you call noob, I have 3 Demon's Souls platinums

It's fun, but not satisfying, not like Demon's Souls.

I thought the combat was pretty decent, I play on the PC so I don't know if that makes a difference. But I learned which weapons had range and how to hit and fall back and of course use your kick which is invaluable.

I also found the game to play and feel much better when you reach act 2, I'm a ways into that one right now and my enjoyment of the game increased quite a bit.

But I can see how people are turned off by it but I like it a lot and the melee combat system works well, especially when you play tactically instead of swinging wildly. The idea is to avoid groups as they surround you and retreat and attack at your convenience.

PS: gotta love the shock mod on a machete.

O yeah, shock mod Machete is my go to weapon. Love it when it crits on a thug.

One thing I do love doing in Act 2 is agroing a bunch of zombies, jumping on the hood of the car, and continue to merrily swing away at my leisure. That is one thing that is very satisfying.

Guess I'll just have to keep perfecting my technique though.

I think you're supposed to choose your battles. Your character isn't a super-powered juggernaut, so sometimes it's better to avoid conflict altogether. If that's not your style, just spam the hell out of the jump kick. The game would be waaay harder without it.

This isn't L4D which is why the zombies are harder to kill and done so perfectly. I didn't start to like the game until act2. Dead island doesn't feel like your typical run and gun which may be a problem for some. The game is a 9 in my book and so far the best zombie experience I've ever played through.

Game deserves nothing under an 8!!! Fantastic game and a great ride!

It would be an 8 if the amazing number of bugs didn't make it a 5. I've given up on trying to play it until the next patch rolls out for the PS3 version. Buggiest game I've ever played.

never played fallout 3 did ya?

Look at the scope of Fallout compared to Dead Island....And they were on top of a lot of the major issues and still released patches years after.

IMO Fallout>Dead Island but that's coming from a someone with the Fallout guy as his avatar =)

I wasn't saying that fallout is a bad game or that some of the bugs weren't understandable (they could've fixed a lot of the easy to find ones before release), neither was I comparing it to Dead Island.

MysticStrummer said Dead Island was the buggiest game he played and I know that the buggiest game I ever played was Fallout 3 followed by Fallout NV, see the connection to my post :)
