In the past few years the trend for releasing classic old games in shiny new HD has risen dramatically. So too has the release of prequels to classic series like Halo and Deus Ex been on the rise. So why is the gaming industry taking us back to the start of the last generation of games? Is it a step back in development or a way to remember better times?
Tomb Raider I, II, III Remastered is available now on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Lara Croft is back in a classic remaster of the original PlayStation 1 hit title. Is the remaster any good though?
We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.
For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.
I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.
Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
Hanzala from eXputer says, "After multiple delays, cancellations, and ownership changes, the misfortune of Deus Ex continues; this gem of a series deserves better."
One can only hope at this point Embracer will need to generate an influx of cash flow, and what better way to do so than to sell off some of its IPs... namely Deus Ex, to a competent and talented studio capable of delivering a game noteworthy of the name in future. And thinking about it further, I don't know why Embracer would sit on the IP vs sell it if it means staying in business or not.
Many devs can't risk spending a lot of money on new IPs, so they're going back to old ones.
Like Godmars290 said, a lot of them are playing it safe. Proven formula creates limited risk. Also, a lot of HD remakes are in preparation for sequels/future titles such as ICO/SoTC for Last Guardian. Its an expensive but effective marketing tool.
Funding for the next IP or sequels.
Okami HD for Vita would be epic.
or Okamiden port on the vita would be heavenly.
Personally I welcome some of the remakes like Persona 4,Final Fantasy X,Metal Gear Solid 3 and Halo. Those games symbolize the creative flair that the industry once had. However I know they are cash-ins and offer little to gamers now.

Give what consumers want = $
Do you really think the CEO's and people in charge of it all were like, "It would be uber cool to see an HD 3D version of chrono trigger.....OMg OMG make it make it!!"
