A "Pair of Walking Tits" Brings Resident Evil’s Direction Into Question

Kotaku's Speak-Up: Has anyone seen that Resident Evil Revelations trailer introducing a minor character, Rachel?

Is it me or is Capcom getting lazier with its creation of minor characters in its Resident Evil franchise? I got absolutely no sense of Rachel's character, only discovering that she has a pert ass, a fine pair of norks and an impractical haircut.

I think the fact that her hair covers roughly three quarters of her face speaks volumes about Capcom's intentions for her purpose in the game: namely the presentation of some tittie-action to the audience.

Perhaps Capcom have given up entirely on trying scaring its audience. Perhaps they have finally decided to give up the ghost (if you'll excuse the pun) and drop the "horror" element of their survival horror games entirely.

More guns, more girls, less effort, less atmosphere.

The story is too old to be commented.
zeal0us2650d ago

I think capcom could of done a better job on the character design.

is it me capcom is just worse as time goes on.
-ridiculous price dlc
-half-a** sequels
-sequels that probably should been dlc

Quagmire2650d ago

"I think capcom could HAVE done a better job..."

and whats wrong with a pair of walking tits?

rezzah2650d ago

they don't do so well in games that try to create atmosphere, and belong in immature games for immature minds.

guitarded772650d ago

Maybe next time they'll learn from their mistake and put a fat retarded chick with acne and little hands as the supporting character.

rezzah2650d ago

^
How would that improve the games atmosphere of dread and horror?

Think before you let you childish emotions get the better of you, its obvious to see what you tried to do.

They need something more reasonable and realistic, not fan service. Give her less revealing clothes that will also make her look like an actual special force agent. Let her be able to see 5 feet in front her face, unless if shes blind then the 3/4 face cover might make sense.

vickers5002650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

@rezzah

Agreed. I don't want an unrealistically dressed and groomed woman in my game full of zombies. It's just not believable.

darx2650d ago

Cause Zombie games are so beleivable

jeseth2650d ago

I think we are over analysing this whole thing.

Guitarted said something funny to lighten up the conversation and play Devil's Advocate and just got ridiculed for it.

Then after all this "boob" talk and it not being realistic or believable enough we forget we are talking about. . .

#1 : A Video Game.
#2 : A Zombie/Undead/Las Plagas Game.

Stop being sutch video game snobs and have fun for a change.

morganfell2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

"Maybe next time they'll learn from their mistake and put a fat retarded chick with acne and little hands as the supporting character."

A good example would be to look at Capelli's wife in Resistance 3. That is the direction they should have taken a supporting character. She is supposed to add to rather than distract from the story.

"I think we are over analysing this whole thing."

No we are not. It isn't JUST a video game. RE titles were, and it seems that is the operative word - were, originally designed to build tension. For that immersion is required. Immersion is trampled and thrown out the window when a character's incongruity pulls the gamer out of the moment.

In this case any attempt to build that gripping, gut wrenching suspense is evaporated by sophomoric ideas of style over substance.

There are places in video games where the display of an over-stylized woman works - Catwoman in Arkham City - and places where such artificial allure does not - RE titles.

jeseth2650d ago

@ Morgan,

I usually agree with you on most every article thread I see you in but in this case I think people are making a mountian out of a mole hill.

If these people can't get past the size of this chicks boobs and her bangs in her face then it says more about their mental scope and less about how bad this character actually is for the game.

Everyone cries tolerance then the first thing they do is start stereotyping this character because she has big boobs and her hair isn't tied back. Hypocritical if you as me.

Peaceful_Jelly2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

@jeseth, Rachel looks like another generic character taken out of a Matrix movie with extravagant outfit, retarded hairstyle and big boobs in a world full of Zombies. This is seriously something that doesn't goes along with the theme of the series... I mean, even the Resident Evil movies that were pure horse (can't say the word or people take my bubbles away) had a more congruent style than this garbage.

How come you can't see that? How old are you? Because that's clearly bad/lazy character design.

jeseth2650d ago

@ PeacefulJelly

You ask how old I am?

So you are trying to come off as more mature and intelligent yet come at me personally and question my age/maturity?

I've played this franchise since its inception and love Resident Evil. Ada Wong runs around RE4 with a freaking Red Dress with a slit up to her crotch, high heels, and a garter belt gun holster and this is not an issue for you? Shiva's clothes in RE5 are PAINTED ON tight and it seems like every camera shot of her has her sticking out her a$$. Now we get a character with Big Boobs and it doesn't fit into the Zombie/Special Forces believability of this franchise? Are you kidding me? How old are you? Can you not separate video games from reality? Is it OK in your opinion to have oversexualized females in other RE games (Ada Wong RE4, Shiva Alomar RE5, and Jill Valentine RE5) OK as long as they don't have big boobs?

Do I think RE needs this character at this juncture? No. But this franchise has been spiralling out of control since RE4 (even though its a good game on its own) when it went from Zombie styled infections in Raccoon City to "Las Plagas" in a rural European locale being implemented by a crazy Napoleon midget in a g-damn castle!

And you are complaining about this chicks boobs. Check your head and think about what you are getting so opinionated abotu concerning this franchise when the outfit and size of a new characters breasts are the leats of Resident Evils problems.

....How old am I...LMAO. Thats the best you can do?

snipes1012650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

I can see both sides to the argument. On one hand, why do video game developers have to over sexualize about 90 percent of female video game characters? Do all gamers come off as perverts?

On the other hand, what's wrong with having a beautiful woman in the game as some eye candy? Were they going to put an ugly chick in there? Hollywood doesn't even do that.

I do think that this character design is utterly unfeasible though. They went a little overboard on her sexualization and even if there was a woman as sexy as her walking around blasting zombies in some other plane of existence, she'd be getting chomped on in an instant given that she couldn't see an inch in front of her with that beautiful hair covering her face. Hopefully she has some personality.

All in all though, it's not so much about making the GAME believable (zombies are a ridiculous prospect), but making the ATMOSPHERE believable. It's hard to be scared of anything in a video game when there's a gorgeous, scantily clad woman standing directly in front of you.

AKS2650d ago

I would expect most of the female characters to be shapely and attractive (also, Chris in RE5 looked like he lives in the gym and has a side of steroids with each meal; the male character have also had quite exaggerated features), but the woman in this trailer looks downright ridiculous. Also, the hair covering her eyes completely bothers me more than the outfit or her figure.

Leviathan2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

@vickers500 and other "realist" :

Since when were zombie games considered actual representations of reality? I've seen busty chicks before (in REAL life) with hair in their faces even! However, I have yet to see a zombie in "real" life.

I've never NOT bought a game before because *gasp* ...a character in the game has tits. I understand the point of people who say it cheapens the quality of the game, however, I disagree that tits in videogames make said game any less real. There's tits here on earth people. Lots of em... And whats up with all the anti boob talk on this thread? Even my wife likes other womens' boobs.

SilentNegotiator2650d ago

@ "Zombies realistic lololololol"

The (at least older titles of) Resident Evil series has believable and engaging atmospheres - "realistic" in the sense that it's a believable world. Throwing in characters that look perfect and are fighting off the zombie apocalypse create imbalance in the atmosphere of a survival horror. Like so many cheap "horror" flicks of today and yesteryear that throw in a nudie or sex scene.

It's out of place.

CameronL992650d ago

It's all in the eye of the beholder. She's only a pair of walking tits if that's what YOU see. That is, YOU'RE the one objectifying her, and staring at her tits like she's just an object. There's nothing wrong with a girl with big boobs, the problem is YOU if that's all you see.

Dee_912650d ago

what is today overanalyze day or something

DaTruth2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

You know, if somebody was running from zombies and fighting them, I would expect them to be fairly physically fit! Does anyone believe an obese, out of shape woman would last very long under these conditions?

When I watch CSI and lab nerds are all super-hot, then I see a problem!

Why do super-heroines where those trashy outfits? Does anyone believe Wonder Woman could do what she does if she was 300lbs? Do you think she would have a comic very long if she was 300lbs? Who cares???

DARK WITNESS2650d ago

she looks like the perfect meal for a zombie. I mean all that raw flesh in all the right places !!!

bangoskank2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

@quagmire
Thank you for correcting him. That grammatical error is one of my biggest pet peeves an is rampant on this site. I would of played grammar police myself but didn't want to make myself seem like I was more superior then him.

zag2649d ago

YEAH! Who knew having chicks in a game was wrong

zag2649d ago

@bangoskank

Complains but doesn't use any punctuation in the written piece.

The "peeves an is" should be "peeves and is"
The "would of played" should be "would have played"
The "but didn't" should be "but I didn't"
The "superior then him." should be "superior than him."

If you are going to be this anal, then make sure... what you write is 100% correct.

bangoskank2649d ago

@Quagmire

Nothing when there walking down the street and you steal a quick peak. But when you want a game that contains characters with depth and you want to get attached to them, just being a pair of walking tits makes this very difficult. Just imagined if she died "nooooooooo....the big cans gal died...oh well, there's 5 other characters with big enough tits"

@guitarded77

Right. Because the choice is between a whore and a tramp? We can't have some decent looking woman with realistic breast and a real attitude that people can respect or relate too. No no, that would be too difficult to pull off...We need to pick from your abomination or capcoms "masterpiece"

Heartnet2650d ago

Tbh if thats all you see then that speaks to you as a person and not the in game character :)

And if they want there girls to be stereotypically attractive to the male audience then so let em ! they can look like that and still have a decent character... jeez so quick to judge

AWBrawler2650d ago

I'm glad I'm too much of a gamer to be a nitpicker like the people on this thread. The game looks amazing if you ask me, and I think I'll enjoy it.

delicia2650d ago

I think that Faith, from Mirror's Edge, is a nice example on how to make a female character (and a protagonist) and still create immersion. She fits, and she doesn't need big breast to do it.

Saladfax2650d ago

@takashima

Not to mention that her clothing and presentation fit both the world and her place in it.

The costume design is simple pandering to the sweaty teenage demographic. No wetsuit is designed to show massive cleavage. There is not even the slightest hint of practicality towards how an individual faced with a survival horror situation would act.

This type of character design fits with the theme about as well as a fat man in a clown suit would, but the reason people complain is two-fold:

First, fans of RE find the absurdity of design to not be keeping with a style of survival horror. It's all about immersion, and every piece of visual design can make things eerie... or not.

Second, there have been far too many well-designed, well-crafted female characters in games. Not holding up to a basic standard is just plain lazy.

caperjim2650d ago

If there was a muscled guy shown with his shirt off no one would say anything about it being unrealistic. Its safe to say that most hardcore gamers never picked up a weight in real life so why is a fit male any more realistic then a woman with a perfect body killing zombies.

Its an insult to woman to think that an extremely attractive woman will ruin your video game while an overly muscled man is acceptable.

Why not put a scrawny or overweight guy in our video games . Now that would be believable.

cpayne932650d ago

Well for one thing, it isn't that unbelievable that the main character is ripped, he would need to be to survive. Having an obese dude doing some of the stuff you do in video games would be laughable and unrealistic. Besides, being muscular helps in those situations, having boobs larger than your head would slow you down. That's just rediculous.

AWBrawler2650d ago

Capcom did that before. Remember Viewtiful Joe? He was scrawny, short and had a big head. and Captain Blue had a potbelly

Darkfocus2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

uh lots of people complained about chris in RE5 and people frequently make fun of the walking tanks that epic makes...

also there a ton of games with "scrawny" main characters....overweight though I'll give you...can't really think of many games with fat main characters, pretty much wario is the only thing that comes to mind..

OdinFallen2649d ago

You don't really have a clue on game demographics, I'd go look them up.

"Will she be able to prolong her survival?" well, not with that hair cut she won't.

MagicAccent2650d ago

I would call the people working at Capcom "Boobs!", but Im afraid they'd just take it as a compliment.

AEtherbane2650d ago

1) Make a game
2) Add slutty female character
3) ???
4) Profit

Leviathan2650d ago

Such is the business of selling things to men. You know what the worlds oldest profession is, right?

zerocrossing2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

Believe me its not just you.

Lets just cut the crap shall we? Capcom knows sex sells, so instead of improving the franchise with this new game, they just sold out knowing more people will by their progressively worsening (yes worsening is a word) new instalment to the RE franchise if they just throw in a over sexualised character that would be better placed in "No more Heroes" at least the characters in that game are supposed to be outrageous.

Capcom would be better handing over the RE franchise to a 3rd party dev, how much more proof to we need that they've lost touch with the fans?, at least that way their mite be some hope for a decent RE a game happening.

Micro_Sony2650d ago

I thought this was obvious in RE5.

I really dont know whats happening to CAPCOM but if they think they can sell me on sex then they have another thing coming.

Now excuse while I go look for some lube while I look at the attached image :)

zeddy2650d ago

i loved re5, i dont give a shit.

pain777pas2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

People are mad about this. Really? Really?.... Really? Look, I like good games like the rest of us and will not play a bad game to see great female character models. BUT, if the game is good, having great female character models is a bonus. Look at Bayonetta. We have to admit that it is very provocative however, there is a very good mechanical game behind that exterior. All the beauty is a bonus in a great game. I love God of War, DOA, Soul Calibur, UC2 Chloe, ME2 Miranda ... the list goes on where the female characters were proportioned in a way where the nether regions could get happy. However, that was a bonus to an amazing experience. Don't judge because at the end of the day you just might like it and I can say that I like the trailer a lot myself. It's a video game. If you don't like it, then don't buy it.

Solid_Snake-2650d ago

@rezzah

you really are up your own backside.

games are a form of toy and you calling people immature makes you look like the kinda guy who doesnt like to have fun.

you sir are a grumpy T**T

TopherZero2650d ago

This is what a business has to do to make money. No harm done at all and what the hell is wrong with making a video game character that looks sexy. Blowing people up left and right is fine. Big breasts - NO WAY!

SactoGamer2650d ago

Truth be told, I don't mind walking pairs of tits (figuratively speaking).

OmegaSlayer2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

LOL at the hypocrisy.
Most of the girl that have those kind of boobs in real life, actually wants to show them.
You can argue about the point that they would do porn instead of joining special forces.
But I just feel that gamers only want to complain and nitpick about everything.
Today PacMan or Tetris would need a backstory or people will start to whine...

The_Quiet_Man2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

@ OmegaSlayer

I agree with your Pacman statement, heh, heh. People would say hes just a 1 dimensional character even though hes 2D.

On topic:
What does it matter if Capcom puts a character with a big pair in the game, this game wasn't made for the fans anyway. Thats why its getting the Cod treatment prevalent in some games these days in order to achieve massive sales & appeal to the casual crowd. Sex sells or so Capcom is hoping for this game it helps.

Look at what they're doing to all their once great titles this gen, just be thankful it isn't as bad as the DmC make-under. Fans should be careful when asking Capcom for a sequel, you might just get the opposite of what your looking for. I'm glad they haven't announced a new Onimusha game so far (keep your fingers & toes crossed).

Legion2649d ago (Edited 2649d ago )

It is a Japan made game. What do you expect? Just seems like Japan has always leaned towards this type of media when they can get away with it.

It sales in Japan and it doesn't do badly outside of Japan. They are just giving the customers something they are drawn to like any other franchise.

And as for American media: I love me some Carl's Jr. commercials!!!!!

Pozzle2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

Like i said in the other article... Remember when Capcom didn't need to resort to sex appeal to try to interest RE fans? Remember when the RE characters all dressed like proper special forces and police officers? Even though Jill's RE3 outfit was skimpy, it still made sense because it was her casual wear.

But Rachel's outfit...it just looks like pointless sex appeal for the sake of pointless sex appeal. It doesn't even make sense. What sort of special forces officer dresses like THAT? Or has their hair covering their eyes like THAT? It looks just as silly as Excella's "business dress" from RE5. I know the Resident Evil series isn't exactly known for their realism, but at least the special forces looked like special forces.

Heartnet2650d ago

Dude i think ull find that no special forces agent dresses like anythiung u might see in a RE Game tbh... Tahts like saying doesnt every character in a shooter / sci fi / anything with guns where a hard helmet and a bullet proof vest wearing apporpriate camo? Cause whats the point in that?

Pozzle2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

True, but the point is that their outfits are based on enough realism to make them believable for the person playing. The STARS (and Raccoon City police force) wear a sort of modified police uniform and the BSAA wear modified army fatigues, so it's easy to believe they are either a police force (in STARS case) or special force (in the BSAA's case) of some kind. It's not TOO much of a stretch of the imagination that these characters have such a job.

Meanwhile Rachel is wearing a bizarro chest-revealing wetsuit made of leather(?) and a hairdo that ensures she can't see anything about that. How is that a "special forces" uniform of any kind?

jeseth2650d ago

Pozzle . . .

Dude, did you even play RE4 or 5?

Look up Shiva and Jill's attire for RE5 (tight clothes for Shiva and what looks like a skin tight fetish outfit for Jill) and Ada Wong in RE4 (Insanely rediculous red dress, high heels, and garter belt).

The reaction to this new character shows no one plays RE anymore. They have been doing this for a while now.

PS. Good to see so many people interested in RE again and the trailer was actually pretty good.

CrimsonEngage2650d ago

Who cares. Do breasts offend you? Grow up. Second, If you think this is bad play Dantes Inferno.

chadachada1232650d ago

The mere act of showing breasts is not anything to be concerned over, if it makes sense in context. It makes sense for Medusa to be naked, or for Beatrice's ghost to be naked, and I applaud game studios for showing things like this naturally, for the most part.

To throw huge boobs and an unrealistic outfit into a series that used to be ground in comparative realism without cheap sexual tricks is a mockery to Resident Evil fans, and serves no purpose except to make the games less scary and more about cheap thrills.

AWBrawler2650d ago

speak for yourself, I have no problem with the character and I am a Hardcore RE fan. I even played Gaiden and 0

AKS2650d ago (Edited 2650d ago )

It's interesting that the people calling for others to "grow up" seem to have the most puerile and unsophisticated arguments.

Breasts offend us? Good grief. Did you spend a great deal of time developing this stunning hypothesis?

Having shapely, attractive characters in a video game (or movie) is expected, but what was seen in this trailer looked ridiculous. She looks like she can't see anything and might tip over at any moment. Sure, characters tend to be sexualized, but it is taken to such an extreme here that it just looks silly. It doesn't even fit into the context of the type of game, such as Bayonetta, which was much lighter in tone and was deliberately going for campy sexiness.

KNero2650d ago

Bring back Jill Valentine...

Pozzle2650d ago

IIRC, Jill's the main character.
