Penny Arcade defends Assassin's Creed, Feels sorry for reviewers with low scores

Penny Arcade writes:
"Imagine what an open ended sandbox title must look like to a reviewer especially right now. How many games do they have piling up on their desks? A game like Assassins creed isn't meant to be played under a deadline. You shouldn't be trying to beat it as fast as you can so you can move on to Mass Effect or Mario Galaxy. As soon as I gave myself a deadline all of a sudden I understood all their complaints. It was like a fucking Escher painting. I had put myself in their shoes and suddenly the landscape flipped and I could see games from their perspective. In the end I wasn't angry at them for their bad reviews. I actually just felt bad for them."

Penny Arcade FTW! Seriously nice and good points. This game indeed shouldn't be played quickly and under a deadline and if some reviewers couldn't enjoy the game, it's their loss not game's fault.

Jdash246001d ago

completely agree,

great find btw

MK_Red6001d ago

Thanks :)
But the credit for finding this superb article should go to rgun who tipsed the story.

riqued6001d ago

The damage has been done, I don't see myself buying this game. Penny Arcade didn't actually say whether the side mission are repetitive or what.

MK_Red6001d ago

riqued, that's not the point. As Penny Arcade said, this game is about the experience and one that should try to enjoy it simply for itself rather than to finish it ASAP and getting ready for the next game like Mario or Mass Effect.

Gamespot-equals-EGM6001d ago (Edited 6001d ago )

LOL.

EDIT: BTW, this guy (Gabe) is full of crap. The big difference is he didn't spend $60 of his own money to play this game so he could sit back and be very, very open minded about this game.

BUT if a person has to actually spend $60 of their own money to buy this game (instead of it being paid for by their employer) then people are usually much more critical and much less forgiving. Big difference.

rgun6001d ago

Thanks for the kudos, MK_Red.

SharpeNoir6001d ago

MK_Red's Assassin's Creed defence force! I'm also really really excited about this game! I like its new setting, I've always enjoyed reading about the Crusades (former History student) but haven't had a chance to live them, Assassin's Creed is giving me that chance! I must say thought I am pretty surprised with the really inconsistent reviewing of this game. The only explanation I can find is that its just going to be lost on some people who don't find the concept or the subject interesting enough to play through and appreciate, while others are simply going to fall in love with it. It's exactly the sort of game I'm going to appreciate, definitely from what I've seen so far! Therefore I will defiantly be buying it on Friday when its released here in the UK. It looks fantastic!

MK_Red6001d ago (Edited 6001d ago )

Thanks for superb find and tip, rgun
Specialy kudos for you :)

"MK_Red ====> the one-man Assassin Creed Defense Force
LOL."
lol, I don't agree with your comment (Because none of reviewers pay for games but they do talk about games with that in mind) but gotta agree that was a good one.

SharpeNoir, thansk for the great comment :)

If there was such a thing as the Assassin's Creed Defense Force, I'd want to sign up. I've been telling all my friends to ignore the bad reviews. I am loving this game.

Tuesday, I played from 6pm until 3 am, then yesterday I didn't get home until 8pm, but started playing right away and played through 3am again. Both times I had to be up at 7am, but I didn't care - this game is just that good. So, I have logged 16 hours and just assassinated the 6th target. I have spent some time exploring, and I have to say the replay value should be pretty high. The only thing I wish they added was a total percentage of completion stat for the game and tracking for how many assassinations and other kills you had.

I am playing the PS3 version and one of my friends has the X360 version, and I have to say they both look great. A little bit of screen tearing here and there in both, but neither makes that big of a difference. No framerate problems on either. It's great that everybody (that doesn't listen to the idiot reviewers) can enjoy this game. All in all, I would give the game a 94 out of 100. The 6 points is for the screen tearing.

sectionz6000d ago

6-8 hours of this game is good .. i really cannot see myself enjoying 20 hours of it since after the 6 mark its starting to be really sameish .. the only reason they are defending it is because they are personally involved .. AS USUAL WITH THEM .. they never attack something they are politically close too .. hows that for balls.

TheMART6001d ago

Interesting to say at least. That could actually be the reason why the reviews are so different

LSDARBY6001d ago

I actually agree with this twat

TheMART6001d ago

Well even you tard may agree

MK_Red6001d ago (Edited 6001d ago )

We have finally something that we can all agree. Kudos to Penny Arcade for the intersting article and kudos to you for cool comments.

power of Green 6001d ago (Edited 6001d ago )

Didn't mean to agree with you. -bubbles for you.

I don't agree about reviewers being rushed because of ME and Mario but I do agree the number of games in general is causing systematic grading thats hurting games. Would have been an spot on" opinion if it wern't for them blaming specific games rather than the amount of them.

solar6001d ago (Edited 6001d ago )

lmao!! i havent heard that word uttered in years. bravo! and i agree that you agree he is a twat. bubbles!

edit: lmao! i wasnt even talking to you pog. ::rolleyes::

ElementX6001d ago

It's pretty f'ing sad when saying "twat" earns bubbles.

power of Green 6001d ago

I think he was being a sheep and did not see the minus symbol in front of the word bubbles in my post. J/K

InMyOpinion6000d ago

I bet some reviewers will try and rush through Mass Effect as well. Would be a waste of good gaming. I've played it a bit and I found myself just walking around the spot where you first land for about 15 minutes. Looking at the amazing surroundings and searching for upgrades. A tip is to turn of the grain filter, although it gives the game a certain mood it looks better without it. I bet that when you land on the first mission it will take at least 30 seconds until you actually move your character. The beauty of the game is mesmerizing.

Hapimeses6001d ago (Edited 6001d ago )

Great find, and a great read. Thanks for posting that MK_Red (and tipping it, rgun). I agree with Mart /et al/ that this may indeed be a primary contributing reason to the wildly divergent reviews for this game.

Personally, I'm quietly looking forward to it now.

Can We Finally Admit Assassin's Creed 3 Deserves an Apology?

AC3 was released during a turbulent transition period for Ubisoft and the Assassin's Creed series. It ventured into uncharted territory, narratively and mechanically, which caused it to receive mixed reviews. At its core, though, it's a damn good stealth game.

Nope, I hated 3, connar was bland, literally the most flat character in the entire game. Not to mention to myriad of bugs, camera issues, and that annoying thing where he automatically ditches his weapon you payed for for the sake of a cool finishing move forcing you to trek back to your base after almost every encounter just to re-equip your own weapon. It just didn't work as fluidly as the others like 2 and 4

Samonuske191d ago

The series peaked at AC3 for me. It’s been my favourite in the series. Connor will always be one of my favourite video game protagonists.

Becuzisaid191d ago

No. Game was BORING. Connor was really dull. Environments, while impressive, because of the geographic location and time period were not really exciting to be in. I would love some kind of game set in there colonial American time period, but a game like AC that back then centered around parkour and vertical traversal really didn't fit those environments.

-Foxtrot191d ago

Nope

There was a lot of issues but mine is how they handled the war

They told us Connor was not going to get involved, that the war was more of a background setting for the real story and it wasn’t going to be one sided

They lied, even the cinematic E3 trailer showed Connor emerge from the Colonist side and slaughter the red coats to get to his target, inspiring the Colonists to fight back

I just thought it would have made more sense lore wise that the red coats were mostly compiled of Assassins fighting the Colonist templars who wanted to take the new world for themselves.

Since the Red coats lost the war, it would then explain how the Templars started to gain the upper hand and how on the future the assassins were mostly killed off and the Templar’s had pretty much taken over everything.

Instead it just felt like they didn’t want to p*** off the American audience

Even Haytham was cool, he should have been an Assassin through and through and should have been the main lead.

toxic-inferno190d ago

The game even seems to lack the humour of the other games. It almost seems as though the idea of even slightly making fun of American history wouldn't be acceptable.

-Foxtrot190d ago

Exactly

It just felt super safe

“Better not make the colonists look super bad incase people boycott our game”

jeromeface190d ago

someone missed the whole point

-Foxtrot190d ago

There was literally no point

What I've just said above would at least make sense lore wise and why the Assassins start to loose their war, die off and how the Templars are in control in the future of almost everything....what they did was just, pointless

CrimsonWing69190d ago

I’m one one of those weird people that liked Ass Creed 3, but to be fair I never got around to finishing it.

GhostScholar201d ago (Edited 201d ago )

I disagree that max is unlikable. Chloe is infinitely more unlikable in my opinion.

gold_drake201d ago

omg chloe was awful. i really hated her at the end haha

Cacabunga201d ago

Abby was absolute trash protagonist in every way..
Tidus was so meh to me..
On villain side, the one i didn’t like wa Micah, because they wanted him to be that way and it was brilliant👍🏽

Rancegamerx201d ago

I agree, I liked Max, Chloe was a horrible friend and a bad influence.

Cacabunga201d ago

Everyone agrees on chloe, I’m sure even ND do.

H9201d ago

Both are horrible, granted Chloe is infinitely worse, it feels like Chloe is just fanservice for people who too over the edge and wasn't written to be a character that makes sense

GooGobbler201d ago

What about that Forspoken Tw*t

MrChow666201d ago

exactly I was expecting it to be a the top of the list

ravens52201d ago

Ye I was expecting her too. Guess they actually played the game. Unlike you and whoever agrees.

gpimlott200d ago

I played through the whole game and think she is one of the worst character Ive ever played as

ravens52200d ago (Edited 200d ago )

gpimlott. How?

Stanjara190d ago

Why would I payed and played the game if the whole internet is making fun of a character?

-Im here to kill Chaos...are you Chaos?

Yeah, I didn't play that game either.

Christopher201d ago (Edited 201d ago )

She's actually not bad. It's the writing itself that is bad overall, but she's fine overall. She's no worse than Miles Morales IMHO. Both thrust into a spotlight and receiving both praise and blame and dealing with it.

Forspoken is a bland game because it's 75% bland, boring, repetitive going through the motions and diversions that add nothing of the value with purposefully gated memory moments that don't feel organic or like you're discovering things but waiting for others to reveal things.

ravens52201d ago

Exactly Chris. Even though I liked the game. I kno u played it. People who actually played it and went thru her dream saw she was a good likeable person who really just acted out due to being alone and unloved. I think your problem is it was open world, I think if it was more linear you may have liked it better.

savedsynner201d ago

Oh no she's bad. Very unlikable even before you add on the bad dialogue. The game could have been quite good with a good protagonist

ravens52200d ago

For all the people like synner. Shes actually half white lol. Inferior complexity is a hell of a thing. You'll be ok.

Nerdmaster201d ago

Most of these aren't even that bad. Especially comparing to others like Squall "Whatever" Leonhart, Forspoken's Frey, and the guy from Atomic Heart.

-Foxtrot201d ago

Squall is one of the best developed main FF characters so...

People talk about his "whatever" thing thats at the start of the game, not the character he eventually becomes in the end.

Nerdmaster200d ago

No amount of "character development", (especially the ones that for me feels sudden and undeserved like Squall's), will justify him being a d**k to my girl Quistis. Even if he found the cure for cancer, from that moment on, I would never like him.
The article is about being unlikeable, and he was indeed unlikeable for at least half of the game.

BrainSyphoned201d ago

Squall is the best protagonists in FF so you can go whatever yourself.

H9201d ago

My good sir, I need to steal that "you can go whatever yourself" because it's gold

BlaqMagiq1201d ago

Except Squall has actual character development.

gold_drake201d ago (Edited 201d ago )

the "watever" is only present in the english localisation.
so your argument doesnt rly ... stand imo.

Nerdmaster200d ago

Good for you that you could enjoy the japanese version. That's not the case for me and the majority of people here, though.
