According to a forum post by Epic Games VP Mark Rein, an option will be available on the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament III for installing approximately 3.5 gigs of content on the hard drive:
"Yes there is an install option which places a bunch of the commonly used content on your hard drive to speed up loading and texture streaming times a bit. It does not install everything - you still have to put the disc in the drive to run the game. The install is absolutely not essential. The game runs just fine from the Bluray and load times aren't bad but if you're going to play the game a lot, and you've got an extra 3.5Gb on your hard drive, then you might as well do the install because the few seconds you save here and there will add up over time. If you want to free up space you can delete the installed data at any time."
Good thing I've got a PS3. Can't wait.
This.. UGC.. actual release date.. One of the best looking games this generation, next to Uncharted.
Smells like a buy to me.
Can I haz more bubbles?
you said it wrong.. its I can haz more bubbles? and yes you can
On the subject, good idea, doing it.
Incognito and WarHawk already have.
I just wish they would announce a release date already. THis game looks totally amazing and every little update makes me want to play it. It shows how amazing this game is gonna be. Yet its delayed... and will not be played.. for a while.
the game will be finished this week...but has some licensing tests to go through before printing...but the game will be done very soon...I too can't wait for it...
I dont really understand. Is it the whole game or some giant file you download to interact with the game disc?
And to the #1 poster? WTF are you on? Guess you own a 360 judging by your atitude.
VERY cool about being able to install to speed things up. And regardless what SKU you have, 3.5 gbs should hardly scratch the surface. However for 360 users with 14gb of usable space its probably an issue.
Cant wait for this game!
Since the hard disc is much faster...steam texture data from it will speed up load times...but there are other reasons why 3.5 gigs of data is put on the harddrive....
yeppers with a hd in every one devs can do coll stuff like this to make the game even better!
cause i dont want to use up 3.5gb just to make the game load 2 seconds quicker.
Ridge Racer 7 allowed you to do this, and it greatly sped up the times between stages to the order of a good 5sec. Now 5sec may not sound like a lot, but wait to load a race, race, wait to load main screen, prepair for next race, wait for it to load, it took me all of 10 races before I went into the options and installed the game data to the hard drive. Big improvement!
The only reason they are allowing you to install 3.5gb's onto the HDD is to get loading times upto speed with DVD loading times. It doesn't make it better, it just makes it what the game should be like
DVD pushes less data at a faster speed.
Blu-ray Pushes more data at a lower speed.
Make sense to you.
And when all is said and done, dvd is faster, but only when the data stored on the outside of the disc is used.
Theres not much in it at all.
Because blu-ray streams at a constant rate, whereas dvd streams at different rates depending, where the data is on a disc.
But the fact that blu-ray holds more data is better imo.
this isn't an option to "get it up to speed" with anything else...its just an option quicken things up if you constantly play the game...as ps3 owners will...and 360 owners won't, at least for a while...
YES I KNOW THIS IS OF TOPIC BUT I THOUGHT IT WAS IMPORTANT. tonight after downloading some nice themes on a link on this site my new 40 gig ps3 died on me god i was really shocked and dam pissed after installing the themes my ps3 wont read any game discs i put in yes ive clean them to make sure but still the same problemb.i carnt say for sure it was any of the themes but its very strange as it was working fine before i installed them . evan a reformat wont cure the problemb so i wont mess about with the themes any more just incase.ill have to get a new ps3 now still under warranty so should be ok.has anyone ellse had this problemb???? dont know why i have got 2 disagrees this actually happend to me tonight maybe it hasnt happend to you and i hope it dousent but id be very cearfull downloading thouse themes. EDIT THANKS for your responce guys very helpfull. i checked out the forums and it seems that its happening alot this last few days to ps3s with the new 2.update .a sony rep acording to a fourm said that once your ps3 has been afected in this way by the update the only thing they can do is send out a refrubished one,im not happy about this as i would like a new one not a second hand one like most of us i mean i only just got it,the refurbished one will come with update 1.90 fw so why dont sony pull down the 2 firm wear of the psn before it destroys more ps3s wich will cost them money.SONY you scrwed up an i only hope this dousent become like the xbox 360 afair with constant repairs. EDIT 2 the themes i downloaded were from ps3themes.com but each theme will redirect you 2 rapid shear or media fire .
Id advise to call customer service to see what was the reason for its malfunction be careful maybee one of the themes are corrupted or infected.
some guys claim that doing a hard reset (press and hold the power button until the ps3 beeps twice...once after 2 seconds, keep holding it, and it will beep again at about 5 seconds...)...this will reset all your settings, and set video output back to composite by default...if you are using an HDMI connection it will still notice it after a few seconds...so you don't have use the composite cable...I didn't check, but I assume this will also default your theme...if it doesn't, make sure you set the theme back to original also...like mentioned above, it could also be screwed up themes...SCE hasn't made an official response yet on this matter, but I would expect them to have some PR spin and a small update to fix this coming soon...
but make sure you do that with no disc in the PS3...some say it worked for them, some say they had to do it a few times...
it hasn't been confirmed yet, but these problems all showed up with the new firmware...I wouldn't panic yet...there were some stability issues in the past with a few firmware updates, and sony took care of them within a few days...check www.us.playstion.com and go to the forum for more information...
Doing a hard reset (when it beeps twice by pressing the power button for five seconds) does NOT reset your theme though. I know because I have to do it everytime I switch between Linux and the XMB. All it does is reset you video settings. I do however believe it either had something to do with a theme you downloaded, or a problem with the new firmware. My Guitar Hero 2 stopped working correctly after the 2.0 update. Whatever you do, if you call Sony customer support, DO NOT mention that you were downloading themes off the internet and then the problem occurred. Sorry about your bad luck. You should mention what theme you got and where from though so you can warn other PS3 users because I was about to look for some myself.
PS I don't care if you're buying a PS3 or an Xbox 360 (especially THAT one) but getting a replacement program/extended warranty wouldn't hurt. Hate them or like them, they would save you a lot of headaches. Hell, I was able to replace a $1000 worth of Canon Rebel XT for a brand-new one when the auto-focus of my first failed on me. Just don't abuse it!!
PS3 is like a Honda, you can do engine swaps so easily. 360 cant do that.
So, You lose! CyberCentipede gets owned by everyone hear. LOL.
all of the sudden... those days where consoles had the advantage of inserting and disc or game and play... seem to becoming to an end... seems as if eventually consoles will be like PC requiring a game to be partially install on a hard drive to be played. I really hope Microsoft do not allow this kind of practice to be done on the xbox 360... this can make developers lazy and take the easy way out... force them to optimize the way data is read from the disc... lots of games (including on the PS3) stream data from the disc... so as player are playing data for next level is downloading... more work.. but it works... I think Epic is too stuck on PC development that even this practice they are trying to bring to the console world... First modding.. now this? I hope microsoft never allow their game to pass the certification process... keep it exclusive to the PS3.
3.5 gigs..... that's a game right there... I wonder how much deframentation will need to be done... if the hard drive is now use for caching purposes....
And this has nothing to do with space... duhh the PS3 can have a larger hard drive...
what advatage will the PS3 have over PC if this become common practice?
Funny.....

Friend: "Dude, what's taking you so long?"
You: "I'm installing the game!"...
Friend: "crap... PC all over..."
As soon as consoles started releasing patches for games they went the way of PC. Wasn't the Xbox 1 the one to start it all.
or is it becuase you can't upgrade ur hard drive for a reasonable price so you become stingy fvckers with how you use to the space on ur hard drives....
JUMP OUT ..& PLAY B3YOND B!TCHES..!!
Wow this is an amazing option, how about SSD drive support to get the best performance?
If you have space to spare and want to reduce load times, use the hard drive. If you don't have the space, stream from the disc. What's the problem here?
Personally I think it's great. Load times, even short ones, can be a real pain in the ass, especially in a fast paced game like UT3. Why shouldn't they give you the option to take advantage of your HD?
People who are calling this bad news are probably the same ones who got suckered into buying one of those 360 "arcade" units.
i'd hate to have 20 gigs...........IF IT EVER COMES OUT ON 360............hahahahaha!!!!
that's fine with me.ps3 gamers have plenty of room.internal drives,external drives,upgradeable drives.
if you looked up 'MORE' in the dictionary, you would see a ps3 picture right next to it.it defines what 'MORE' is.
lets look at this youtube video again on what 360 gamers are going to have to deal with:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=...
HARD DRIVE or NO GO.and things shortchanged to fit on dvd disc.and now you have the option of downloading xbox games?i'd hate to be you that has no room to download gigabyte games.
but again,ps3 gamers have PLENTY of room to do so.without the extra COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSTTTTTTTTTTT!!!or at a CHEEEEEEEEEEAPPER COST.
you can thank microsoft for not "jumpin in",but "jumping ahead" before they knew what should have been built in for NEXT GEN.
ps3-more power, more disc space, more hard drive space, more features, more content from anywhere using psp and a hot spot.
doesn't that define next gen?having more?
thanks epic for the option on ps3.we have the ability to use it.and 360gamers only have it if they have an elite and 120gig.everyone else is screwed.
mag lev...............
..glad I have that 250gb SATA in my PS3.. cost me a fortune though..
BTW, 3.5" hard drives dont fit in PS3, but knowing that they're SATA... would a cable work with it? I'm just curious... I had to buy a 2.5inch SATA >.< if cables work i'd just get me that Hitachi 1tb hard drive.. i has the monies.. i was going to use it on my computer but meh its already got 500gb on it...
but MAN,you got 500 gigs on your computer?now that is called SPACE.
that's alot of content that could be streamed to ps3 and psp.maybe someone knows and will hit you back on that.
500 gigs........D@MN!....hahahahah a!!!
i'm just messing with 360 fanboys.but they too have the ability, just less space.
50.0................just D@MN!what do you have on it?movies?music?
how much did it cost for 500 gig?
mag lev............
I run ubuntu linux for programming and photo-editing purposes(anti microsoft, btw) I have about 50gb of music i "bought" entire discographies of dream theater, rush, neil young, tom petty, porcupine tree, king crimson, U2... bands like that.. and all the live crap they have... and i dont even know how many concert bootlegs i made are on this hard drive, and all the live DVD's are on this computer, those i really did buy =]. I also ripped a bunch of my anime DVD's to the computer.
I dont remember hwo much it cost me, it's been awhile... 250 bucks i think? well i'll be damned... theres a 500gb hard drive for only 100 bucks o.O .... i might just get this and get almost 1tb of HD space...
http://www.newegg.com/Produ...
I plan to upgrade my PS3 with a bigger HDD sometime in the future, but as of now i still have enough free space regardless of the bunch of videos i downloaded and all the demos, too.
A good bonus for those hardcore UT3 players.
cant stand loading times. ever played Ninja Gaiden Sigma or VF5 without installing the game? no good...
Where did you get that idea?
360 owners are being screwed by Epic, we payed for this game to be made by buying Gears of War. http://kotaku.com/gaming/no... Mass Effect is the last game I'll be buying useing this engine.
Second of all, Epic makes waaaayyy more money licensing the Unreal engine to other devs than they did off Gears. They make more that way than they'll make off UT3, probably more than they'll ever make off any game ever.
So you expect Sony fans to like "thank" you for buying Gears, which in turn funded our version of UT3? You expect other 360 owners to boycott Epic games and games made with Epic tech because they betrayed Microsoft and made a quality title for another platform? Grow up.
Oh and good luck with your boycott...I'm sure there are a couple of games coming to the 360 next year that don't run on UE3...maybe.
http://kotaku.com/gaming/no... Straight from the horses mouth. Guess I must have made all that up.
So I guess now that Epic is done working on UT3 and they're ready to start on Gears 2 we can safely say that 360 owners owe any and all enhancements in Gears 2 to Sony. Right? I mean I'm sure Epic will be applying a few new tricks that they've learned developing UT3 to Gears 2. That's it...BOYCOTT EPIC, SONY TROOP...after UT3 comes out I mean.
Hell they were even going to come out with one every year which would be subsequently named as such in the same vein EA does Madden to sort of play up the "sport" aspect of the tournament. They axed that idea though because they felt that this was more than just a yearly upgrade thus giving it the title of Unreal Tournament 3.
So I'm right this game was going to be made even without Gears' commercial success considering it didn't stop Epic from making the other Unreal Tournaments in the past.
Uh....Yeah that would be exactly what I'm doing. How long did it take for you to figure that out? Do PS3 fans boycott EA? yup, they sure do but atleast EA gets the games out at the same time. Epic does shady business, just ask Silicon Knights.
Epic please release this game this year for PS3!! I want it and I want it now!! Game looks so amazing
if it follows uncharted ( 2 secs ?) r&C (5-7 sec).
That means that I can only install the game 22 times before I run out of space.

LMFAO!
3.5 Gigs!
That 40 gig drive is getting smaller and smaller!"
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxx
That 40 gig hard drive is getting smaller and smaller, but that STANDARD hard drive is getting bigger and bigger.
that's awesome you'll be able to install some stuff to make it run faster.
Well it'll help with load times. I bet most people will install this feature. This game has gotten a lot of hype. Does anyone have a estimate at a release date? Im thinking around Dec 15 US
You don't get even a 20GB with the 360, it is about 13GB which is available. Funny how 360 owners are moaning about this option whilst cheering that they can download Halo and other xbox games. Surely some of them will be over 3.5 GBs?
I like the option, and if it speeds up loading times then cool. There is a lot of user generated content which would be saved on the drive too so its no big deal.
HDD tansfer is faster than DVD and Blu Ray, so it makes sense to make use of it, which you can't on the 360 because MS have not made it a standard feature.
