Tomb Raider 3: Why it's the hardest adventure ever

CVG writes:They don't make them like this any more, thank goodness. Within the first ten minutes of Tomb Raider III, we had suffocated in quicksand, drowned in a flooded tunnel, been eaten by piranhas, crushed by a spiked wall and we'd run out of ideas about what to try next. We were lost within sight of the entrance.

TR III is one of the best in the series, it's more challenging than the first two games yet it kept the atmosphere of the original.

I have been lost many times on those huge levels with no hints or guidance whatsoever and kept trying for months till I finally beat the game.
Sadly they don't make games like this anymore

I remember being so excited after finding the quad bike on lara´s mansion it felt so rewarding after exploring the whole mansion.

i remember this game ..i finished the first level 2 years later after starting it the first time ... just an difficult level designs , traps everywhere and very few indications

You are correct, every game now puts those kid vest with the leash attached to us gamers and leads us around and yanks on it if we want to explore.

One game that required us to think hard on top of good timing (controls).

I still had that Tomb Raider mentality in me when playing Uncharted - I kept on thinking Nathan would never pull off a certain stunt because there was always a chance Lara could miss that jump or ledge.

Uncharted as a whole diferent pace and style than the PS1 Tomb Raider games.

Yeah Tomb Raider generally was quite a difficult game in retrospect. I remember really caring about not dying in that game as well, because you could only save at certain points using save crystals, and they were considerably spaced from the previous one. They were like puzzle-platforming and action.
Then Tomb Raider Legend came out and that had autosaving, linear paths and QTE but it was still a good action game.

It was just the fact that, it was hard in a good way. Not like just giving bosses a ton of health and make them over powered like God of War for example, but the challenge in the old Tomb Raider was in avoiding traps, timing jumps, choosing the right paths and all that sort of thing.
