BioWare Co-Founder: RPGs Are Becoming "Less Relevant"

BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk says RPGs are becoming "less relevant" as a genre to the current state of videogaming.

When you think about RPG studios, one of the first and foremost to spring to mind is very likely BioWare. This is the company that made its bones by bringing back the moribund RPG genre with the 1998 classic Baldur's Gate, after all, and then blew things wide open with follow-ups like Baldur's Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights and, more recently, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. But the times, they are a-changin', and according to Dr. Zeschuk, the nature of the RPG and its relevance to gamers is changing too.

U mad? Practically making one of this gens best new RPG IP's into a squad based shooter doesn't exactly help things now does it Bioware. But I don't make games, just play them, so what do I know eh?

WhiteLightning4620d ago

I think it lost the whole Squad based shooter when they took out the cool down weapons.

The whole point using your squad in battle is when you had to wait for your own biotics to recharge (which took longer in ME) or when your weapon was cooling down.

In ME2 you just keep on shooting and you would find ammo all over the place. Plus all classes could use more guns like a Vanguard could learn Assault Riffle training. ME2 was amazing but felt like any other shooter, I mean they couln't even give gamers a choice between what gun system they would like to use....and it's a game about choices.

I'm still waiting for the J-RPG revival, cmon Sony start the revival with Legend of Dragoon 2!

Solidus187-SCMilk4620d ago

HAHAAHA. As their games become less and less of RPGs, Bioware is becoming "less relevant."

MariaHelFutura4620d ago

Me3 is becoming less relevant to me, everytime bioware starts speaking.

otherZinc4620d ago (Edited 4620d ago )

This is a good thing to me. I cant stand boring@ss JRPG's or more traditional RPG's, more power to the people that like them, they can get games online for all I care.

Thank you BioWare, for giving us Mass Effect! Mass Effect is the only style of RPG I'll ever purchase!

Looking very forward to Mass Effect 3! Thanks!

thats_just_prime4620d ago

EA buys out Bioware tell them to make their games more of a shooter and to pump out yearly up dates. Bioware sales drop and they blame it on rpgs not being relevant ?

Then he goes on to say "you're getting lots and lots of progression and RPG elements in shooters - online persistence and so on."

To me it sound like they are more relevant them ever.

Maybe you're not doing RPGs right?

NYC_Gamer4620d ago

I guess this explains why they ruined 2 good franchises

Stealth2k4620d ago (Edited 4620d ago )

I respect him

BUT

Hes a fool. RPG's are as relevant as they ever were

Tell that to the highest selling game this year which was an rpg pokemon.............Make it an action adventure and does it sell as well?

I think not. And after how terrible dragon age 2 was, and how split people were on the rpg ness of mass effect 2. Youd think theyd learn what there fans want

Gameplay9994620d ago

Yeah Dragon Age origins, and Mass Effect were the last two titles they filled with RPG goodness and everyone loved it. Now.. not so much.

The two series have very similar aesthetics. If a Halo RPG was ever made, Mass Effect would be good template to take influence from.

@disagreers The only thing I mentioned was that the series have a similar look. I said nothing negative about either franchise.......

The_Sage2696d ago

I don't think they look similar.

Sciurus_vulgaris2696d ago

I think the artstyles are similar, especially Mass Effect 1 and Halo 1-3. Both series became less colourful overtime, but I still see some simularities in art design.

kraenk122697d ago (Edited 2697d ago )

The problem is the Bioware founder don't work for Bioware anymore... hence why I better temper my expectations for ME Andromeda.

Games like Gears of War 4 which continued what Epic Games started, Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze which continued what Rare started, Halo 5 which continued what Bungie started...

I've seen a lot of sequels do their originals justice this generation.

I have faith they'll get it right.

Xzviur_Azai2697d ago

Indeed a perfect example is Dark Souls. 1 was outstanding, 2 was ok but meh, 3 brought it back. However sometimes you get lucky but Bioware hasn't been lucky yet, instead they're busy checking off lists instead of finding their original or surpassing magic.

-Foxtrot2697d ago

Shows you how out of touch they are. They probably were like "bu bu but...space"

That's easy to say in retrospect but it was 10 years ago. I'm sure at the conceptual stage it did resemble halo, with halo being the most popular sci-fi space franchise at the time, and also MS's biggest franchise. There weren't a lot of sci-fi franchises with the depth of Halo's story, and you have to admit there were similarities between the reapers and the flood.

Remember the original Mass effect was a MS exclusive game, so I can definitely see the conflict. But boy am I glad they let it happen.

MatrixxGT2697d ago

Yeah that was a long time ago and probably even longer being in conceptual stage of development.

XXanderXX2697d ago

Shame MS didn't buy Bioware before EA , imagine MS owning both FPS & TPS Space Shooters .

sullynathan2697d ago

Bioware would probably cease to exist if Microsoft bought them.

2697d ago
XXanderXX2697d ago (Edited 2697d ago )

That can happen with any Company when buying another company , it can either happen right away or over a period of time .

sullynathan2697d ago

The founders quit on their own, Microsoft has an even worse track record than EA when it comes to buying companies.

kraenk122696d ago

Yeah, because they have such a good track record....

XXanderXX2696d ago

As far that I know all companies have their mistakes & failures when it come to mergers , buyouts & acquisitions.
