Five Reasons Why Halo is the Best FPS Franchise of All Time

PlanetXbox360: "Whether you love the franchise or hate it, Halo is undeniably the lifeblood of Microsoft's gaming console. The original Halo not only propelled console first-person shooters to what they are today, it served as the most compelling reason to pick up and Xbox. If it wasn't for Halo, the original Xbox likely would have failed, resulting in no Xbox Live and likely no level of online gaming even close to what we have today. Sure, games like Call of Duty and Battlefield are stealing some of the spotlight, but no other franchise can even come close to accomplishing as much for the console FPS genre as Halo. As such, it deserves recognition as the best console first-person shooter franchise of all time."

Yeah, I wouldn't argue with that. Being a PS3 only owner this generation(PS2/Xbox owner last generation), I've never received so much enjoyment from an FPS campaign than Halo 1. The atmosphere, the colors, the pacing, open-ended gameplay, Master Chief..just an incredible game all around. Halo 2's campaign sucked IMO compared to Halo 1's though.

As far as FPS multiplayer is concerned, BC2 and Halo 3 are the best I've played this generation. COD is fun in short bursts, but too twitch based for me to take seriously. Also, Halo: Reach in my view overcomplicated things with the class system.

TimeSplitters: Future Perfect > every FPS out there

LightofDarkness2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

Or you know, anyone who's played other FPS games.

Seriously, Timesplitters 3 is better than Half-Life 2? You'll have a hard time finding people who agree with that one.

sikbeta2262d ago

@dude above

take it easy man, don't take so serious eveything you read on the internet :P

YipMan2262d ago

Read the damn article. They speaking of console FPS. Damn! Fanboys are out in force to be anti-Halo or anti-Xbox.

handheldwars22261d ago

The Half Life franchise is great, but Halo is the very best FPS franchise!

Everyone knows that Halo revolutionised gaming and to this day you can see its influence. It is ONE of the greatest games of ALL TIME.

LOGICWINS2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

Halo popularized online console gaming like no other game before it. If Halo hadn't made XBL so popular, who knows where online gaming would be today. Heck, if it wasn't for XBL's early success, PSN would have been garbage. Its obvious that Sony decided to take online gaming seriously only after seeing how successful XBL became.

Uncharted 3 is just NOW adopting the ability for two players on the same console to go online together. Halo has been doing this for YEARS.

Battlefield 3 is just NOW considering a save and replay feature...Halo has been doing this for years.

You have to be in denial to ignore how Halo has influenced the greats of this generation. I respect all opinions..but theres a difference between having a differing opinion and being blind.

zerocrossing2262d ago

Yeah but Golden eye 007 did it first, and before that it was Doom. Halo is only carrying on the FPS legacy, Im sure there will be another after Halo to do the same.

Still I agree Halo is a great franchise, I just cant stand the fanboys blowing it out of proportion.

LOGICWINS2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

"Yeah but Golden eye 007 did it first, and before that it was Doom."

But that has nothing to do with my argument. I stated that Halo brought MORE popularity to the FPS genre and online console gaming than ANY console game before it. That includes Goldeneye 007 and Doom. Everything I'm saying is 100% fact.

Whether 007 and Doom came out first is irrelevant to the fact that Halo popularized online console gaming like no other game before it.

"Halo popularized online console gaming like no other game before it."

^^This was my original argument and you still haven't proven me wrong.

Ducky2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

"Battlefield 3 is just NOW considering a save and replay feature...Halo has been doing this for years."

Probably shouldn't pick a primarily PC-centric franchise when talking about features in console games.

Battlefield 2& 2142, along with CoD (or well, most/all games that use the quake engine) on PC have had replay features.
It's a feature known as 'demo recording' and has been around for quite some time.

.. but yea, Halo definitely popularized it on consoles.

EDIT: I think TF2 has always had a demo recording feature (it's in the engine). They recently added an in-game editor to make saving/viewing replays more easier for the less technically-inclined masses.

I should add that although PCs have had replay features, Halo (and CoD's theater mod as well I suppose) have pushed devs to make those recording tools more accessible. BF3 and TF2 are an example of that.

LOGICWINS2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

@FatOldMan- Yep, I believe TF2 on the PC has a save and replay feature as well. But as you say, Halo did popularize it on consoles. I should have been more specific by saying "the console version of BF3 is now adopting a save and replay feature"

@Machioto- I never insinuated that PSN "sucked". In fact, idk what that has to do with anything. All I said was that its obvious that Sony is investing so much on PSN now after seeing how successful XBL was.

"psn only suck because sony had to create everything from scratch"

So Microsoft DIDN'T have to create XBL from scratch as well???????

n4gisatroll2262d ago

I don't know where you people were during socom...that did that for playstation what halo did for xbox. Infact I think maybe socom did it before halo...

kikizoo2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

"revolutionised gaming"

[email protected] misinformed US childs...

Halo is just a unreal tournament clone, and like most of the clones, not better than his master.

"yes, as it is an Xbox 360 site the article is more centered around console gaming. "

hmm no, only 360 gaming (and even with that, they are wrong on that one)

@LOGIC What I‘m trying to say is microsoft had xbl features in xbox1 so there transition from then to now was easier than sony‘s and I nerve said you said they ”sucked”(thanks for the correction ) I meant as in bad and sony didn't need to look at microsoft to say “we need to be online ” because killzone 1 and socom already online capable .

TBM2262d ago

Yea no planet360 that honor goes to half life don't get it twisted.

solar2262d ago

"Console FPS". sure, ill admit Halo has done wonders for online console FPS's. but still doesnt hold a candle to what CS, Quake, Tribes, UT, BF, etc has done for the PC shooter. especially for Competitive Gaming.

2262d ago Replies(1)
zerocrossing2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

Why would I argue a fact? Its true Halo helped popularize online console gaming, But games like Monster hunter, Quake III Arena, Socom and Counter strike where already popular online console games well before Halo 2 came and made online gaming simple to access for the masses.

On top of this MS made sure that Halo was overhyped to near godly status, almost everyone with a Xbox had Halo, And went on to buy the inferior sequel Halo 2, that went on to introduce many of the fans to online gaming.

The reason Halo 2 was so successful online was because of the sheer number of people who had it, And I'll say it again the reason so many people bought Halo 2 was because like its predecessor MS made sure it was ridiculously overhyped.

So yes you are right, Halo introduced a huge number of new players to gaming online, childish, obnoxious, racist, sexist, vile, insufferable players, that would never have been there before.

Halo will be remembered for that too.

Its a shame you can't reply, I was looking forward to your response.

Inside_out2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

Highly original and as solid a FPS as you can find. Greatest of anything is a highly contentious thing and totally subjective...but Halo should be considered...

Part 2...

Interestingly, Halo will be going up against MW3 in November with Halo Anny edition. MW3 WILL be on that list as well...

Gray-Fox-Type02262d ago

I guess fanboys get butt hurt when you state facts that Halo changed the face of gaming.

nintenflo2262d ago

I'm sorry but halo is boring!!
Don't get me wrong back on the original Xbox halo was a revelation, it was something new and exciting!
Fast forward to now and halo is mediocre at best, it's slow repetitive and it's controls are lightyears behind battlefield and cod!
Halo as a force died when halo 3 arrived the hype was insane but the game just didn't live up to it!
The truth is halo hasn't changed since the original and even the fanboys have to admit that the series peaked with halo 2.
I just don't get it's popularity!

Convas2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

I'm going to agree.

Halo: Combat Evolved revolutionized the way First person shooters were played on consoles. Halo 2 brought matchmaking into play, another huge innovation at it's time.

You know why Naughty Dog went to Bungie for help with Uncharted 2's Matchmaking system? Because Bungie almost singlehandedly built Microsoft's Xbox Live Matchmaking infrastructure with Halo 3. And companies on both Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 have used that infrastructure in some regard in there games.

It's also one of the reasons very few games can touch the smoothness of Halo's Matchmaking system.

On consoles, no other game has brought to gaming what Halo has. THIS. IS. FACT.

@Trikster40: Seems you have an issue with reading comprehension. Super Mario Bros. is NOT a first person shooter.

BlackTar: Wholly crap. Are you guys stupid or something? WE'RE TALKING ABOUT FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS. How did Zelda and Mario get into this? Metroid? WTF.

trikster402262d ago

Ever heard of a game called Super Mario Bros.?

BlackTar1872262d ago

Im going to say Mario,Zelda and metroid brought more.

I think the current gen kiddies put to much stock in to halo since it was most of there's first true experience with the VIDS

^^^^^^ all personal opinion btw^^^^^^^^^

ARC35822262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

I was trying to figure out why exactly people are disagreeing with you, all your points are true.

1.Halo:CE revolutionized FPS games on consoles: Fact. What is to disagree with here?
2.Halo 2 kick started online matchmaking: Also fact. Still can't see anything to disagree with...
3.Naughty Dog went to Bungie for help with their matchmaking system: Again... Fact. Weather you like Halo's gameplay or not doesn't matter, they designed one of the best matchmaking systems of all time, no one should be arguing against that.
4.Halo brought more to consoles than any other fps: I would say this is fact again. Sure you could say that if Halo had never existed some other game would have been the one to revolutionize console fps'. Sure you could say if Halo never existed some other game could have been the first great online multiplayer game. But the truth is, weather you like it or not, Halo got there first. Halo made fps' popular, Halo made matchmaking popular, Halo led the way for every console fps you've ever played, so yes, Halo has had more effect on the console fps genre than any other fps.

@Disagrees. I suppose it's people simply disagreeing for the sake of disagreeing. If you care to argue against one of these points at least have the decency to tell me which one.

Spitfire_Riggz2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

Your right man. These people are ignorant if they dont think Halo 3 has packed the smoothest and best online structure out there.

Forge theater splitscreen online 4 player online co op customization vehicles the list is endless. SINCE 2007 son. Breakthrough game right there.

trikster402262d ago

You said QUOTE "On consoles, no other game has brought to gaming what Halo has. THIS. IS. FACT. "

You didn't say No other FPS had brought to FPS what Halo has, you said no other GAME has brought to GAMING.

Convas2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

My quote was still in context. I was still speaking about Halo's innovations in terms of it being a first person shooter and I never indicated that the subject (First Person Shooters) shifted to anything else.

I made sure I pointed out that the subject matter revolved around console based first person shooters at the very beginning.

**Halo: Combat Evolved revolutionized the way First person shooters were played on consoles.**

You're still wrong sir.

alexcosborn2262d ago

agreed. Halo's matchmaking is flawless

LOL at the disagree. U mad?

Ducky2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

Half-Life franchise says hi... as the first Half-Life had a bigger influence than the 2nd one.

Personally, I found 'No-One Lives Forever' series to be the most fun FPS games I've played... as far as SP is concerned anyways.

EDIT: Yup, that's the one. =)

BlackTar1872262d ago

No one lives forever 70's spy game with the chick?

if so that game was fricken awesome for sure.

i googled it and it is what a great game that was

Motorola2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

Half Life 2? Even Half Life source. Half Life destroys Halo.
Edit: *looks at site name* THAT EXPLAINS ALOT.

alexcosborn2262d ago

yes, as it is an Xbox 360 site the article is more centered around console gaming.

Micro_Sony2262d ago

Half Life who?

Just kidding - Half life really deserves credit than it gets but I think it due to the fact that it was first released on the PC and most gamers now really started gaming on the PS2 and Xbox 1.

LOGICWINS2262d ago

Never played Half Life 2, so I can't comment on that. Did that game have multiplayer?

StayStatic2262d ago

Half-Life Death Match , Counter Strike , Team Fortress and all dat jazz ...

Now with Source

nycredude2262d ago

Dude how young are you man? Never played half-life? I suggest playing those games first then come back and talk.

SweatyFlorida2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

Never played half-life 2?! "Does it have mulitplayer?"

Please don't comment any further on the subject.

alexcosborn2262d ago

I'm sure it does, and while Counter Strike did wonders for online FPS games on PC, Halo set a new standard on consoles. Half-Life 2 is a single player experience, and while it is in many ways far superior to Halo, it can't compete when we factor in multiplayer
