Naughty Dog Responds To Drake Demo Anger

Sam Thompson, Line Producer at SCEA updates gamers on the official PlayStation blog in regards to the issues European's have had in regards to the highly anticipated demo.

What's of interest is the changing of attitude from the original announcement to the actual response to the gamers who posted their disgust and frustration with the problem.

"Hi guys and gals,

We hear you loud and clear. Wanted to chime in here and let you know that we have shared your frustration with the Naughty Dog team and we are going to see what we can do. I will be back tomorrow with an update, but in the meantime I hope you can be patient and bear with us. As you have learned through communicating with Evan and Amy on the blog, Naughty Dog is a studio that listens to gamers, so I hope to have good news for you soon.

Thanks,
Sam "

Most people today have noticed my disbelief and anger towards this problem but I wanted to notify you of the changing of attitudes in regards to this.

Firstly, in the announcement he only states that the game, because launched in the US Store, is meant for US consoles and that PAL regions would have their demo in the future. In response to this embarrassingly pathetic excuse, people reminded him of the fact that demo's from all the PS Store's are compatible with any console and it's been a common practice for PlayStation 3 owners since the console launched in those separate regions. Sam then responds and says Naughty Dog will take a look at the problem tomorrow morning.

So what exactly happened?

This was no accident, there is no doubt about that, it was an intentional region lock, most likely to stabilise the US servers. This seems to have backfired with the furious reception this action has received and it seems now that Sony and Naughty Dog aim to rectify their mistake in region locking it.

Sony always have to learn the hard way don't they? Power to the people I say!

Hopefully they actually do follow this up because the gaming community will be waiting constantly for updates, ready to pounce those US servers at the moment the "new" demo is up.

Danja3455d ago

I kinda figured it had something to do with Sony not wanting to overload the servers..ne ways next time they should make these details available to us gamers...

riqued3455d ago

They didn't want to overload the servers, but forgot to warn that the Demo wouldn't work? Making thousands of people download it even if Sony didn't want them to?

They said it was a bug and I have no reasons to believe that it's a lie.

Nostradavis3455d ago

Please tell me where Naughty Dog responds? This is Sony responding.

Meus Renaissance3455d ago

If you actually read the comment, Sam says specifically that he works for Naughty Dog. He even speaks about them in 1st person.

Nostradavis3455d ago (Edited 3455d ago )

I read the comment...he works with them.

Announcement post:

"+ Posted by Sam Thompson // Line Producer, SCEA

Hi, since I’m new to the blog I wanted to first introduce myself. I am the line producer on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and I work with Naughty Dog on a day-to-day basis and have been working with the team since Crash Team Racing."

He is one of the producers, not part of the technical team and that's what he means by "sending it to the Naughty Dog team". I can understand your confusion. I should have made it more clear. He is not an employee of Naughty Dog, but of Sony, but is working with/for Naughty Dog in relation to this game I believe hence the title "line producer".

Nostradavis3455d ago (Edited 3455d ago )

agreed, that is just a tad confusing.

It seems like PS3 gamers in Europe are getting ripped off. They shouldn't have to invade our PSN store to get demos. We shouldn't have to connect to Japan to get GT demos either. All the games work on all PS3s. It's time for all Sony stores to give their territory all the demos.

Total and utter absolute fabrication:-
Don't pass your ill founded assumptions off as facts when they are plainly not facts at all. If there is any real eveidence to support your comment, then offer it. Otherwise it's a worthless and very unlikely opinion.

rofldings3455d ago

"However, an official comment from Sony after the many posts of upset fans seems to state things in a different manner. This bug on non-US PS3's was not intentional region-locking, but a bug that of course was not discovered when putting up the demo, as it was not tested on a non-US unit. They say they are working on it, and hopefully we'll have some very good news tomorrow"

First I have problems with a ps1 game downloaded from the Australian PSN (controller-lag) making the game unplayable, arguing with online support by being told it works ok and I don't know how to play, now this.

This pissed me off so much, I could only do one thing. If naughty doesn't care much about this region, that's fine by me.

I went out and bought COD4 and loving it.

Now I don't give a sh*t when they release it.

if that's the case, they could have saved themselves a lot of grief by TELLING them this in the first place.

tocrazed4you3455d ago

I am just glad that sony acutally listens to our demands and tries to address them as quick as they can you know :D. Hope everyone else besides us in the Americas can get this demo is kinda long for a demo with some good action :D

Snukadaman3455d ago

Nothing would of been done..now theres a chance that you guys might be getting the demo lock off....never listen too those various douchebags that say "why complain and whine like a baby blah blah blah"...no matter what console you own we can all agree, all the companys fugg up sometimes...it doesnt hurt when people complain...it can only make things better.

wil4hire3455d ago

I mean really.. is this going to stop you from buying the game? No... Its a courtesy to the fans to even get a Demo out in the first place..

I cant imagine them keeping the PSBLOG up for much longer..

The only main gripe I have, is that they didn't state it WOULDN'T work outside of the USA in the description to download.

I am in the USA, and if I dl'd GT:P and was greeted with such disappointment, i'd be angry.. but not surprised.

Meus Renaissance3455d ago

This is not simply about people getting upset by a demo. It is the overall treatment once again Europeans get. If Sony wanted to deny this demo to other regions, they could EASILY have made an announcement about that or given a caution description under the demo itself to warn people that it would not work on their PAL consoles.

No. If they had said that, yes people would be disappointed and there'd be complaints but hey, atleast it saves us the time. But no, we are allowed for our excitement to grow and grow, the anticipation levels rise and then....NOTHING.

Instead, thousands of people have wasted their bandwidth of a whooping 1.2GB in just one use and I don't need to remind you that several ISP's actually charge if you go over a certain bandwidth limit. So there is potential of those people being charged money for this screw up.

And it reminds us Europeans once again what a shoddy crappy store we have here. We are treated like 2nd class citizens.

Sony should instead create individual PS stores for the larger EU countries, and then one main one for the smaller ones that have less people downloading. This would solve most of their problems and we British would get our damn demo's the same time as you do because, as you may have guessed, we too speak the some language.

BrianC62343455d ago

This demo is great. If there's any demo worth getting upset over it's this one. I just finished it and I can't believe how great it was. I don't even have an HD TV and it looked great. The controls are really good too. I wish all demos could be this good.

The_Engineer3455d ago (Edited 3455d ago )

you complain about downloading a demo from a store you're not supposed to download from in the first place. And now Sony is gonna bend over backwards because of a few whiners?? geeeeeeez louiseeeee. If it was the other way around I wouldn't complain I would just keep playing COD:4.

buncha babies.

lol you got issues, its only videogames "mate".

-_-_-_-_-_-_-3455d ago

Engineer, me and my friends were looking forward to this demo. We organised what we call a "demo party :)" at my place which is almost every friday. We get some food and drinks and play what's new on PSN. It was arranged for this friday as well. With Uncharted! Now I need to call my frends and disappoint them. Will you please do it for me? It's not such a big deal. But an overall treatment towards european customers is.

Oh, and I just hope to go to war against people like you one day, so we can play COD live with real guns.

cartman3133454d ago

I would probably be upset too. Why can't all the stores be the same?

pwnsause3455d ago

the demo was short, but it was well worth playing, everything runs smooth, MY GoD, this game is soo good, Naughty Dog wasnt joking when they said Blu-ray was needed, The demo is 1200mb big, and it was very short. that says everything

Shadow Man3455d ago

the game is so beautiful and plays so well and the AI is great i died a few times the first go around on normal. I can't find any problems and i was looking. It's even better than my expectations, which were pretty high. All the more reason to buy it.

cartman3133454d ago

I thought the water was amazing. I jumped in and actually came out wet. Never seen a game do that before.
