Five Fighting Game Genre Definers

Denkiphile writes: "For those of you who may not be familiar with the competitive world of fighting games, this last weekend was the Evolution Championship Series (EVO) in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is undoubtedly the largest fighting game tournament in the world, enticing players to come from all over the world, including Japan, England, Singapore, and more. It’s important to know all the factors that have led us to this point, which is why we’re documenting the five most important contributions to fighting games." (Arcade, BlazBlue Continium Shift, BlazBlue Continuum Shift II, EVO 2011, Industry, PS2, PS3, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Wii, Xbox, Xbox 360)

I hate Ultras, one of my biggest problems with SFIV was the fact that play stopped for those mini cut scenes. It's a fighting game, it's supposed to be fast paced, and zooming in on a character causes a real disadvantage to the other guy when you're playing an actual human opponent.

i dunno , the way i see it there are prlenty various flavors of fighting games for good reasons .

SF was never truly gfast paced , at least not the main serie and compared to some other franchises .

Also the way i see it , the zoom and pause for the ultras start , makes it far easier imo to react afterward . MOst wouldnt be able to break the ultras with a shryuken buffer (or even less on reaction) without those

Dude, it only stops for like less than half of a second. And the slight pause is actually good for the opponent to react and evade it, if it is a random super of-course. Because if it was part of a combo then with or without zoom in, pause or whatever there's nothing you can do about it.

I don't know, the first time I saw it I just thought that it didn't belong in a fighting game. The fact that it can be an advantage to the opponent makes it seem worse actually because they zoom in like the character is about to do something epic and then it fails. If they make a new Darkstalkers I hope they don't include them, but if they do I'll cope.

lol article. Even before Street Fighter even have those supers and their cancels SNK fighting games already have them.
Art of Fighting already have super meter bar which you use to charge.
Fatal Fury already have supers activated when your hp is low.
