Don't forget about BioShock, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, COD4, The Orange Box, UT3, Uncharted, Rock Band, God of War 2, World In Conflict and Crysis.
SMG is GOTY worthy and has chance but so do those games and they too deserve GOTY.

MK I agree but...
While anything to do with Half-Life is normally great, the orange box is just a re-packaged HL2 with episodes 1 & 2, and two more goodies. I don't think that would be enough for it to win game of the year.

UT3 & Bioshock are good guesses (I love anything UT), but I don't think they have the same appeal, the same "it" that SMG has.

Good comment and point.
But I believe that "it" factor is kind of personal and while SMG has it for many people (sites, mags and gamers), there are those whose "it" game of 2007 is different.
For me, it's between "BioShock" and "Assassin's Creed". For others, it may be "Mass Effect" or "Halo 3" or "Uncharted" or "God of War 2". But I agree that for most "it" may indeed be SMG.
Still, all of them should get a GOTY award. This year they should give GOTY to more than 1 game.

Actually, I don't think SSBB will score as much as Mario Galaxy. SSBB is a fun game but it was not meant to be one of the best games of all time while Mario Galaxy is. It is also a true sequel to the uber classic Mario 64.

The last quarter of 2007 is shaping up to be one of the best for amazing game releases. I just wish I had enough money to get them all...
