Edge - Xbox co-creator tells us consoles are everywhere and explains why the success of games on iOS is "a total victory".
Not untill we see what the next generation of consoles can do.
Wont matter what they can do. Wii proved name recognition and software is enough. PC can't kill consoles no matter how fast or pretty.
But PC keeps new and innovative ideas alive! Love it.. tell me I am lying? excluding LBP nothing really fresh from the consoles this gen.. Is this not a big statment? "And let’s be realistic. Consoles used to be 80% of the industry as recently as 2000. Consoles today are 40% of the game industry" - http://www.industrygamers.c... And when it comes to indie games pc wins! "Steam revenue for Zeboyd Games beat out Xbox Live sales in just six days" "Speaking with on the Zeboyd Games blog, via Gamasutra, Boyd said the Steam sale was a “tremendous success,” compared to the revenue gained being on XBL Indie Games Service for “over a year and a half.” - http://www.vg247.com/2011/0... awsome game btw.. And if console win anything it's the casual audience which allways = big money! Core gamers should be thanking casual games — Ubisoft get ready for more motion controls! - http://www.thatvideogameblo... "Hardcore Elder Scrolls gamers may not be all too happy with the new path that the franchise is taking, what with Bethesda claiming recently that they want the new iteration to be "really accessible" to the "average person"." - http://www.qj.net/xbox-360/... "Hitman: Absolution to be “more accessible” to the masses, still for the core" - http://www.gamenews.name/20... sorry to be a party crasher though I was just sayin..
There are people saying consoles are dead lol?
There are far more gaming capable pc's out there than consoles. Yet just because a pc can game doesnt mean it is being used for that. You can't say the same about a "game" console. That is pretty much the sole purpose. I'd say 10% of the consoles are not being used for gaming (media players mostly) where as that percentage is much much higher on the pc side (schools, business...) Why does this matter again?
That what I was thinking lol. I've heard many times that pc gaming or handheld are dying, but consoles? Can't see it happening anytime soon. What is this? Pc fanboys' wet dream?
have better graphics on their games but for the most part, the best games this gen are console exclusives MGS Uncharted Red Dead Redemption Super Mario Zelda Metroid Gears 2/3 InFamous God of War LBP The list keeps going. A lot of games get better with mods on PC (GTAIV, Oblivion etc..), but consoles receive a majority of the best games.
I was talking about power and performance. Didnt realise it was about sales. Also i never said console's are dead.
@ BeastlyRig The most hardcore games ive played this generation are: Demons Souls and Ninja Gaiden so yeah...
Well, the PC's demise if you want to call it that is due to oddly enough being an open platform. As such, it paved the way for too many variations (in hardware), inconsistent experience and the costly upgrade cycles (even if you didn't need to, you felt compelled to). Like time and time again, it has never been about flexibility or even "best" technology. It has ALWAYS been about ease of use, even among hardcore gamers. That is what made the Wii succesful and again Kinect. That is what made consoles win over PC. By almost all accounts, PC is by far superior to any console out there, but that didn't matter. Same thing with Xbox 360/PS3 compared to the Wii. Still didn't matter!
PC gets multiplatform console average looking games + exclusive hardware intensive monster games. As well as the most accurate controller the Keyboard & Mouse combo never loses on that deal. A central unified online network? no. There is the STEAM, Origin, and LIVE options.
People bought over 190 Million Consoles this Gen alone, i don't see how anyone even doubted they were losing. I Agree with the Co-Creator.
Gaming aside, consoles are the #1 device people also watch Netflix on so it's not strictly just for games either.
That's all I used my ps3 for was netflix. In the end I sold it before it got a price reduction so I got a pretty penny back from it. Imo if you use your console strictly for netflix. Now would be the time to sell. At least then you'd have a couple hundred put aside for wii-u
Cool story bro /s
I am set with PS3 for at least 3 to 4 years more because ps move,3D & vita connectivity expands the entertainment value & possibilities on PS3 so i don't need another console yet. Also im pretty sure plenty of other PS3 gamers feel the same way as well & im willing to bet plenty of game studios have invested in a lot of game projects this gen for the next 3 to 4 years so i doubt most game studios are even close to being ready to move on to next gen.
I'm sorry, but I wouldn't consider PS Move as insurance toward the future of the platform. I own Move, 2 Move wands and 1 Nav, but I seriously haven't used it in months. I used to play Sports Champions all the time but since then, I never found a use for the Move. I tried Killzone 3 with Move, but it just felt weird. It took some getting used to, but even after I got the hang of it, I still went back to the dualshock controller.
Consoles will NEVER DIE! the three consoles are about to hit 200 million console sold combined!!! Thats and lets not forget the 200 million ds+psp Thats about 400 MILLION GAMING MACHINE ARE BEING SOLD! that, and software are more successful; Call of duty sales EVERY YEAR tops 20 million halo and gt 5 are above 8 million sold for each there are 20 million pokemon game sold every year 28 million mario kart Gears and uncharted are 5+ million sold 25 million new super mario bros 10 million super smash brawl 18 million GTA IV on consoles So my point if you didn't get it yet, that pc, NOT IN MILLION YEAR KILL ANY DEDICATED GAMING MACHINE. "rant ends"
pc are the paradigm for game production and consoles are the craftmans' tool.
there are some idiots (which are common to n4g.com) who do not know what the word paradigm means Definition of PARADIGM 1: example, pattern; especially : an outstandingly clear or typical example or archetype 2: an example of a conjugation or declension showing a word in all its inflectional forms 3: a philosophical and theoretical framework of a scientific school or discipline within which theories, laws, and generalizations and the experiments performed in support of them are formulated; broadly : a philosophical or theoretical framework of any kind without the pc there is no console. they connected. one will never be without the others.
In less than 5 years, mobile hardware will cease progressing, due to electron loss, and power drain (i.e. battery drain), issues at manufacturing scales smaller than 20nm. In less than 10 years, desktop hardware will cease progressing, due to issues involving sub-atomic particle behavior as well as the speed of light, at manufacturing scales less than 10nm. Think what will happen to the market, when (a) mobile computers are nowhere near as powerful as desktops, due to power consumption reasons, (b) the ever-advancing nature of PC hardware... just stops advancing, and (c) increases in diminishing-supply oil prices cause increased demands on electric power grids, and household electricity becomes expensive enough to make owning a high-end machine, especially with the electron loss issues at scales of 14nm and 10nm, inordinately expensive. I'm not taking sides here. Just consider the issues. (1) In 10 years, consoles will likely be crafted to fit the household electric budget, and maintain a certain standard of gaming power for many decades to come. (2) Portable gaming may never again be as close to console or PC gaming as it will be during this upcoming generation. (Or maybe it will, if console/PC gaming becomes restrictive due to power reasons?) (3) Building a new PC every 2 years will become a pointless exercise, except in the case of repairs. In lieu of the pointlessness of building a new PC, Pre-made PCs will likely become much more popular, even amongst gamers. Will PCs become more popular, if they stop the constant progression of upgrades? Will consoles become more popular, due to hardware standardization, and the need to eek out every ounce of power from the hardware, to make your game look better than the competition? EDIT: I assume all the disagrees are from people who are scared out of their minds that semiconductor technology has nearly reached its limit, and that the past 40 years of constant tech progression will just... stop. Change isn't a bad thing, folks. It happens with every new technology, you know.
But that's when new tech gets realized... Such as Optical based Microchips. New stuff, Ulf.....new stuff.
Sadly, optical computer tech is grossly underpowered, and still occupies entire labs (i.e. no "micro" in the "microchip"), and quantum computing is still just a lot of hopeful "what if?"s with no serious working technology outside of a few of the most basic computing fundamentals. Those concepts are why I said "decades" rather than "centuries", however.
pc fan boys keep dreaming noone i mean noone is gonna stop playing their consoles to play a pc lmao like noone i knows plays games on a pc like come on its 2011 noone cares about pc but the nerds that gloat how much better they are but guess what nobody cares ....
Console Gaming and PC Gaming are not killing each other, they are both contributing to "Gaming" in general, the only thing that is killing both sides is the ignorant and arrogant community that is truly the cancer
Facebook is a console now?
Consoles has "won" and is way more popular then PC. I just bought a insane gaming PC for over $4100 becaus I want gfx perfection...but I have no problem facing the reality that consoles is the "king" today. It's just the way it has evolved...
We're living in the Golden Age of gaming and consoles delivered us diverse and unique experiences next to PC and mobile, the consoles are still here and this generation of consoles saw the biggest growth....i hope there will be at least 2 more cycles of console awesomeness. i prefer consoles over any other platform, u just can't beat dedicated hardware/controllers and playing on a big screen! Hooray for the consoles! : ]
Both pc gaming & console gaming have been pushing each other hard this gen to pump out the games we want to play which is a win for all gamers in general & it's been a pretty dam awesome ride so far!
Props to all the hard working game studios that work themselves to death for our entertainment!
I dont see devs dumping support anytime soon. Because they sell loads of copies on consoles. Do people really think that Activision is going to dump support for consoles and loose over 10 million in sales? Nope they wont. But i will say this about PCs that since the hardware always improves PCs end up surpassing consoles.
I don't game on my pc. Consoles all the way for me and my games. I will never understand how companies like steam can have huge sales but no one does the same for consoles. Why do console games cost more than pc games?
enjoy your last gen of consoles! no seriously, the ps4, wii u and xbox720 will be the last consoles as we know it... they will all release in 2012 and be relevant (at least what console players consider relevant, to me my xbox360 and ps3 were OUTDATED the day crysis came out!) till 2018 2018!!!!! do you know how far things like download speeds, cloud computing, integrated chips (cpu/gpu on one die) will have come in 7 years, there will be no need for a stupid, unupgradeable hunk of over priced inferior parts from sony or microsoft. look how horribly outdated the ps3 and 360 are, they are a TOTAL JOKE! My wifes laptop runs mass effect 2 better than the 360 or ps3 does at higher resolutions with an integrated chip!! it cost about $450 1 year ago, she needed it for school. lol.......consoles!
@yamzilla true. crysis 1 on MEDIUM(not even high or highest or with mods) with 8xAA and 16xAF @1080p looks better than ANYTHING on consoles. crysis 1 can run at these settings on 2006 hardware and get 60FPS crysis 1 maxed out even without mods(which isn't even the best looking game on consoles anymore) is an entire GENERATION ahead of ALL console games. its sad even dead space 2 or bulletstorm pc look better than anything on consoles. consoles have been holding back pc since 2006. console fanboys need to see games like metro 2033, crysis 1, crysis warhead, bad company 2, shogun 2 total war, napoleon total war, gta4 with mods, empire total war, crysis 2(even without directx 11 patch) and witcher 2 running on pc and not compressed youtube videos to realize that these games are easily a GENERATION ahead of even their best looking console games. next generation of consoles won't be the last generation because alot of people are not going to like the idea of games being tied to internet connections and connection speeds such as on live. if you don't have internet at any given time it would mean you won't be able to your play games AT ALL. besides games will be massive then do you know how much it would cost gamers to stream games that are over a 100gb to our tv sets ? internet bills will be WAY too high
