A week after its release, Catherine has already become Atlus' biggest launch title ever. The game has shipped the most units at launch of any Atlus game in the company's history.
Awesome! Let's hope for a new JRPG from them for PS3!
why not for the 360 as well?
Because it's a JRPG, not a shooter. JRPGs sell like crap on the 360 so there is no point in gimping the game for that console when people aren't going to buy it on the 360 anyways. Also, you can't sell ignorant without IGN.
FF13 aside that also sold well on 360, can you name me a single jrpg that sold well on the PS3 ?
Dread, just ignore that person and move on. People like that aren't worth striking up a conversation with.
Lost Odyssey sold like crap on the 360. JRPG isn't meant to be on a system that plays mostly shooters and has a western audience.
@Kurt Russell and COD players are sex machines?
because it's not meant for it.
not it wont be PS3 only stop dreaming the game will come out xbox360 aswell. how is Cahtrine gimped because it'S on xbox to?
Nah newmonday , that ones for homophobic 12 year olds ;)- JRPG is the next evolutionary step for those lads and laddetts :D
why did he get so many disagrees. this just shows the site is INFESTED with ps3 fanboys (rats).
Sucks for you cereal because all the good jrpgs are on 360 not to mention wrpgs. I guess you can play vesperia in japanese and whats the other jrpg that the ps3 has.........right nobody cares.
Why the ask ps3 fanboys will never learn.
Oh, I wouldn't care either way if it went to 360. I'd buy it on PS3 regardless, but I'm a multiplatform owner so I don't care about exclusivity when it comes to 3rd party games really. I play all my singleplayer games on PS3 and most of my online games on 360, though this year it's been almost nothing being played on my 360 sadly. I suppose I should have put PS3 and 360, however I'm also a PC gamer, so someone should get mad that I didn't post it on that either. ALthough we all know that these games don't usually hit PC (which I think they should.)
game is alright, even thought many free flash games similar to it are available... atlus are nice and a niche company i played persona games, even though not my type of games. This one however was much more interesting. Less of that bullshit social crap from persona series to more gameplay. Persona games are soooo boring. Damn repitition kills it. even though characters are funny and dialouge too. Last one i played was on the PSP remake of the PS2 one..and half way just gave up. Boring game..dating sims not my type of thing as for JRPGS more interested in the Last Story or Xenoblade...
@SuperLupe FFXIII is a JRPG? no shit last time i checked Square Enix westernized that game and imo that was a bad experiment :/
FF13 is a good game compared to the other jrpg's released this gen
Awesome game...just beat it the other day. It's good to see a game that does something different get some shine. I've gotta say though, I still think that the sexy marketing had something to do with it. I can't believe that, if this game sold better than all of their past titles, that it was strictly the "quirky gameplay" and "unique storyline" that did numbers. Following that logic, the persona games should have done just as well...hell Atlus's whole damn catalog should have done just as well. A vast majority of their games are quirky. sex sells
"I've gotta say though, I still think that the sexy marketing had something to do with it." This is the primary reason I'm not buying it; I have no idea about the gameplay. Everything I've seen is just sexy marketing and I can't even imagine how a game like this would play! Okay, you've got sex! What else? Edit: Although, I completely ignored the demo, I'm the type of guy that doesn't just play every demo I see and sometimes they sit in my HDD for months until I finally delete them!
You complain about not seeing gameplay, yet you choose to ignore the demo and multitude of gameplay videos? Bizarre.
@truth... That's a shame man it's a really good game. The puzzle aspects are fast and furious. Here, I wrote a review for it at a site I write for http://geekrevolt.com/video... I ordered my copy off of amazon so I didn't feel like an idiot walking to the counter with it. It's kind of embarrassing that they marketed it the way they did. I like sex, women and the female anatomy and all that, but this marketing is not exactly helping gamers' image at all.
Not sure if Catherine can be categorized as a JRPG. Its more of a Puzzle game than anything else with a dash of sexiness on the side (okay lots of sexiness) lol! Loved the game.
Sex sells? Nah, I also believe it's a very good and interesting game that I will definitely pick up.Nice to hear that it's selling well.
Well sex does sell, but it wasn't the driving factor for this game, like you said, it was the quirky and unique game play and storyline, which is the reason why I am getting this game.
The demo had me engrossed. I think I am going to buy it now. The demo was just.. mind numbing. Probably can't afford it right away, so hopefully when the game hits 40$ or so.
kind of surprised but awesome none the less, awesome game, can't wait for Persona 5
ha, just noticed your avatar. I was playing persona 4 on my 60 gig fatty but it died:( i haven't repaired it and the slims obviously cant play it....pissed. I need to finish it and hope they do a next gen persona... Any ideas who has the persona rights. Ive only seen them on sony platforms. Its official, somebody is pissed about catherine
Atlus owns the Shin Megami Tensei franchise.
Atlus owns the franchise and Catherine devs even said that this was basically them testing there engine for current gen systems so P5 should be in the works hopefully soon love all the SMT games
Should be sooner then you think they've been working on another Persona game since P4 and they were also working on Catherine simultaneously with P4 they quoted saying, "the Persona 4 development team would switch back and forth between developing Catherine's first stages and polishing up Persona 4." And Katsura Hashino confirmed they've been working on another Persona game since March 2010 with this quote, "I want to add things that are being expected of the series and change things that can be changed within those boundaries." I'm definitely looking for an Atlus announcement at this years TGS.
haha i would be so pumped if they did, i knew they were working on something but there the kind of devs the keep things hush hush which is nice
At most I can expect them to show a trailer for the remake of Persona 2: Innocent Sin for the PSP and they will probably throw a new trailer out for Devil Survivor 2. I can only hope they'll announce something P5 related since they got the team off of working off Catherine and with the positive sales its received, I also got to commend their engine as well it's pretty much tied as my favorite cell shaded engine next to Valkyria Chronicles.
See Devs/Pubs. Taking risks DO work. This game is well, not a traditional games and it still sells an ass load i guess.
Proves that gamers are pervs. XD
This game is pervy yet stays classy at the same time. This is how you do mature games right :)
im a perv so what ???
@malol Who isn't a perv? lol :)
Well, in the survey in the game, 90% of men put down that they're a perv. Roughly 80% for females.
I'm not a perv, just addicted to internet porn
if it wasn't for the, we would have never gotten demon's soul in the west. along with 3d dot hero which is a very under rated game. atlus are suppose to release a game called last crusade or something that i read about in game informer that looked really interesting
I agree with you completely that 3D dot hero is an underrated game.
3D Dot Game Heroes is so awesome. I would love to see them tackle other classics like Metroid or Final Fantasy (RPG) using the 3D Dot Technology.
3D Dot Heroes was great! Atlus continues to be one of my favorite companies by developing and publishing many of the more interesting games out there. I decided to pre-order Catherine to support Atlus in fear of this getting pushed aside in stores, but I am happy that other people took notice of this game also.
Catherine was a terrible game (if it can even be called a game). It seems like it would've been better as a Playstation Mini rather than wasting a bunch of money to make it a retail game. I was surprised when it was announced that it wasn't a downloadable game (especially after playing the demo). Kind of sad that they decided to make this garbage over Persona 5 but I'm sure if Persona 5 gets made they'll use this crappy Catherine engine and gimp it for the last-gen console known as the Xbox 360.
You gotta pay the troll toll, to get into the boy's hole, ya gotta pay to get in. - Frank (Always Sunny in Philadelphia)
Hahaha great reference I love that show. Everytime I watch it I feel like I need church right after lol. Any congrats to atlus they deserve it I loved the demo so i'll pick it up when I get a chance.
Catherine is one hell of a game. Playing through the game with my best friend on his PS3, and DAMN. We can't stop pausing the game to laugh at how screwed Vincent is in his current situation on Day 4. That scene when Katherine comes by in the middle of the night?!? Couldn't stop laughing. I swore he was effed up, down, backwards, forwards, sideways and diagonally. Congrats to Atlus. Hoping to pick this up for 360 at some point of time in the future. @Why or Why: Prolly because I said I wanted it for 360. Everybody knows gamers don't have friends, let alone best friends. LMAO!
good to hear. These off beat games need support. Ill wait for the european release...im just glad somebody had the balls to publish it out here EDIT im not sure why somebody disagreed. Maybe somebody spotted the lie about a best friend......cause you have none...obviously;)
If atlus can do this well with a puzzle/dating sim game than why can't namco do the same with tales of franchise or Nintendo with it's Japanese game.
It beat Demon's Souls? was. not. expecting.
Demon's Souls is not an Atlus game, they just localized it
No shit. But they still published it in the states, so Demon's Souls should still be fairly compared.
Hurray for clever gaming and story over mindless, one dimensional tedious crap.
Atlus always brings us the good stuff. Catherine is awesome, and I love the Rapunzel mini game in the bar. I want a custom made arcade machine that plays rapunzel in my house.
I haven't finished it on my Xbox 360 yet, but I think it's fun and interesting to say the least. Pretty hard at times though. Glad something different in a new IP is actually doing well. Maybe if more new games get attention it will wake up these gaming companies and help them to take some more risks.
You plan on going for the achievements? The guys over at Xbox360Achievements.org are saying that it's one of the hardest 1000K on Xbox 360.
I never go for all of them, I usually just try to beat the game anyway I can and am happy with what I get.... I think I've only ever completed 3 or 4 games fully, and those were earlier Xbox 360 titles that had some easy achievements.
Just beat catherine yesterday and i loved it. The story and the characters were amazing...my goty so far this year
I hope when they do make Persona 5, it'll be even more awesome and sell even more.
Catherine is an awesome game but it's also F*cking hard! I got frustrated while playing but couldn't stop playing. Damn. Atlus = F*cking Awesome!
WELL DESERVED. ALL HAIL ATLUS!!
now imagine what would happen when they announce Persona 5.
Good work for Atlus,I'm glad how successful Catherine has become.Never expected for Catherine to release in America.
Hopefully this will set a fire under their collective asses and start work on a current-gen SMT.
Its probably already well into development. Catherine was in development same time as Persona 4 and they announced it only 6 months before it released in Japan. So fingers crossed for end of next yearish in Japan.
This game was fun, i don't play puzzle games but im seriously thinking of picking it up, the demo was intertaining and i found myself standing up on the couch,(yes you read that right.) trying not to get impaled by the fork.
Just finished this on normal and it was one hell of a ride! Went for Chaos, aaawww yeeeeaaaaahhh Though the puzzles were a little hard like I expected, but logical thinking and patience really helps... Now to gold everything on Hard... This game has unlocked my love for my hidden puzzle urge... must go and buy the rest of the professor layton series... EDIT: Also why doesn't anyone want Shin Megami Tensei IV :(
Well the fourth title in the SMT franchise is Strange Journey for the DS in which the game plays like SMT 1 and 2 where its through navigating in a first person perspective. It is definitely bizarre but the spinoffs like Persona and Digital Devil are more popular then the main franchise either way I love just about anything that has the SMT label in the title.
Ugh I forgot about Strange Journey... and I own it... I'm a poor excuse for a fan...
persona 5 please :D
Atlus is probably the only
