An opinion piece on why video game movies have had a hard time being good. What is it that holds them back from being good pieces of cinema?
Poor casting and deviating from the stories that made the games great.
Pretty much this. Piss poor actors and you tell a story that isn't even in line with the game. I think the only game to movie adaptation that is worth watching is the original Mortal Kombat movie. It actually wasn't bad. The second one? Makes me want to vomit. Same can be said about games made from movies. Every game that comes out that is based on a movie blows ass.
Qualitywise, MK1 and MK2 weren't that far apart IMO. Obviously, they weren't the best movies out there, but I thought they were both entertaining. Also, I found the original Tomb Raider to be very entertaining. Way better film than any of the Mortal Kombat movies. The only videogame movie I've seen that literally upset me was Max Payne because it was such a wasted opportunity.
Mainly due to the fact that people in charge of the project see them as one-off "quick-cash" machines.
