OXM UK: "Brink's broad range of character types is an attempt to rectify a "terrible" developer tendency to model characters after their own ethnic origins, according to Splash Damage writer Ed Stern."
Brink sucked so this guys opinion means nothing to me.
Yeah, your dislike for his game entirely justifies turning a blind eye to the fact that the vast majority of videogame protagonists are white.
It is true that many main characters are white males but you can't deny the fact that there are some great main characters who aren't white. For example: GTA:SA, Tenchu, Crackdown, Riddick, Any NFL or NBA game, Afro Samurai, Just cause 2 and 1Shadow Man and you also got some cool characters in fighting games and most of them aren't even remotely white, like from Tekken and Street Fighter. I don't know why people keep complaining.
That most game protagonists are white (or Japanese, etc.) simply reflects who is making the games. If you had more games produced in Africa or the Middle East, you'd likewise have more protagonists representing those races. Honestly, I find this "terrible" situation a little absurd. No one complains that most Asian-developed games have Asian protagonists. Why the double standard?
why is it then that most Asian protagonists in Asian games look white and not Asian.
nothing to rest of the educated world. On point, I agree with Ed- we need more diversity and hopefully, not diversity for diversity's sake. Get beyond the whole Middle Eastern players= terrorists, Russians = Evil opportunists and America is dominate mentality.
I totally agree.
I would ask what form of entertainment doesn't do the same - You don't see Spike Lee out there making white movies (ok maybe 25th Hour) But I think in this sue happy society where you have to be P.C. with every word you speak - Any game made that sterotypes another race either directly or indirectly ONLY becomes a story if the ones who made that particular game aren't predominately that color. - just a thought (maybe a dumb one)
Brink had a writer?
Brinks total list of dialogue could fit on one piece of paper.
He got paid somewhere in the millions, and has won hundreds of script awards since.
Isn't it kind of ironic and hypocritical of them talking about limited character diversity, when in Brink there is no option to play as a female?-something which instantly alienates female gamers.
Good point. I think it was a resources problem, but even so.
I know, I think I heard that somewhere before. I only raised the point as they don't hesitate to critisize other devs, whereas they aren't so golden themselves. "People who live in glass houses", etc.!
American/western media is all very white-centric, it almost seems like white propaganda sometimes. I have nothing against white people but every main hero and hottest girl is alwas white in almost every movie, tv show and game and every non-white is a manifestation of an exaggerated cultural stereotype.
White propaganda, -_- another one of these types joy. Then watch bet, or other dedicated to minority network shows, if white america's media is so horrible to your eyes. And how many characters in general aren't a stereotype, i'll not claim your wrong entirely but the way your stating it, doesn't fall too short of racism or prejudice against white people/culture.
Brink is trying to "rectify" this with a "broad range of character types"? The hell they are. You can only play as 3 different races in Brink; White, Asian, or Black. All of which are male characters. Most games with customization allow hispanic too (and women nowadays), so they're actually giving us less.
As a black male, I don't really care what color the protagonist is. I don't play games to see a digital representation of "my people." I play to enjoy the game.
this coming from the studio that decided it was too much work to add women to their game. it's ok to add diversity if it's easy. like changing the skin tone, if it requires more work then screw it right? most games that have a character creator let you change the skin colour, and many of them let you create a female character too. splash damage have no right to be claiming they're all progressive or anything because that's just bullshit. they're anything but. if changing the skin colour meant more work then they wouldn't have bothered.
They should have added women so that they could re-enact your avatar.
