CVG: EA has warned Sony and Nintendo that their portable gaming businesses are under increasing pressure from mobiles and tablets.
CVG really ragging on the PSV today.
Sure, blame the messenger....
@gamingdroid Dude, you're in nearly all Sony related article with the same negative attitude towards their products. If you don't like it, why don't you just stay away. _____ [On topic] I think gaming handhelds have the best controls for portable gaming. Touch-only controls or crappy keypads can't compare. As a gamer, that's what I care about. For the people that have been gaming on portable systems for years, mobile $1-$5 mini-games are not going to change anything for us. Missing out on beloved and well-known franchises? No thanks.
First of all, I didn't say a darn thing about Sony in this comment... so it sounds more like you have a grudge for me? I never said, I never liked PS Vita. In fact, if anything I have praised it, but that is besides the point. EA has expressed their opinion so why blame CVG for bringing you the news. By the way, if you don't like my comments, you don't have to read it. :D
Nintendo & Sony should combine forces again! To make sure both of them succeed.
@axelstone That would be EPIC... Too bad Nintendohh stabbed Sony in the back by opting to go for something other than CD-ROM when the PS was in development.
Imma start sniping bubbles. How the hell do these trolls have so many bubbles? The mods must be high. They let all these trolls have so many bubbles. Unless........ The mods are the trolls........ Bubble terrorism time........
i tell what the day dedicated handhelds stop being made, and i have to rely on phones/tablets to get me gaming on the go i'll stop gaming on the go. to me when i see people playing on tablets like ipad and whatnot it looks complete retarded. for me i need proper controls when gaming. also i like full fledged games not these flash games or games where im just swiping my finger across the screen. to me this is not gaming. i know when ill be going to/from work ill be playing the vita with its proper controls not phones/tablets where all i do is swipe my damn finger across the screen.
Whatever you say EA... ¬¬' Theres a massive difference between tablet/mobile gaming and portable handheld gaming, and EA doesnt seem to realise that. Mobile gaming is mostly small games you play when you're bored at work/in class, whereas portable handhelds are for gaming as if you were playing on a console, or something to play on the train to work or during your lunch break.
I don't disagree with you on the games part, albeit there are some great games on mobiles too. Some with great production value. However, people bought handhelds because mobiles weren't as prolific and was NOT at the time good enough. Now they are good enough for the casual gamer. I think EA is right, the handheld market is going to shrink. That said, PS Vita might be the greatest PSP unit ever made.... However, there is a lot of negative outlook from developers which doesn't help the platform nor the fact that Nintendo is dropping their price.
Like you said, for the casual gamer. but what about the rest? Thats what these handhelds has to offer us. Games that can't be done or found on a Ipad. It also offers a better and more comfortable way to game. tapping on a screen forever isn't going to be fun and lacks variety in ways to play games.
Casual > Hardcore or non casual. For each 1 harcore there must be 100 casual out there, Iphone 5 > 3DS < Vita.
What you must remember though is those looking for fully fledged games like Uncharted on Vita and Resident Evil on 3DS, are a minority to these companies now. They get a better profit margin for quick short games on Android & Itunes then they do on 3DS & Vita. Vita and 3DS will probably be the last handhelds as the market has changed now. Look how well Move, Kinect and the Wii have sold. We were once the people these companies focus on. Now we are the minority. Gaming has been changing for a couple of years. Just look how short some games are lately only to offer DLC on day 1. We're gonna get shorter, cheaper games soon that will offer the rest of the games as DLC & frankly, It Sucks!!!
with most of your post. However games aren't shorter. Didn't have hardly any 6 hour games 20 years ago unless you count pacman or donkey kong.
it may be going in that direction, allthough if it does i predict a similar thing of what happened back in the 80's to repeat, if developers get lazy and look for small fast develop games, most of them will be shovelware and not even casuals will be willing to put up with mediocre games forever. however i don't ever think it will there is still than enough core gamers to keep true gaming alive thankyou
"Mobile gaming is mostly small games you play when you're bored at work/in class, whereas portable handhelds are for gaming as if you were playing on a console, or something to play on the train to work or during your lunch break." You have it the other way around. Recent data shows that mobile gaming is on the rise faster than dedicated hand held gaming especially on transit systems and on the go type situations. I personally have notice this trend over the past two years. I work in the downtown core and drop my car off at the bus station to take the subway to work. On the Subway more people are using cell phones and or Tablets for fast gaming then dedicated hand helds like the PSP or DS. Also the age demographics has changed also. Recent data has showed more 18-35+ age groups are using their Smart Phones/Tablets for mobile on the go gaming than DS or PSP hand helds. This quote also speaks truth: "After all, how many devices do people want to carry?" It's all about convergence. I know WOULD NEVER BRING my PSP or DS on the train to work or use it at lunch time for example. That means I am carrying my Laptop, Smart Phone and my hand held to work? I use my hand held for longer trips and at home when I have the time. My daily work commute and lunch breaks I use my GalaxySII for my quick gaming needs.
and how many of these people play core games anyway? Probably zero percent! Fact is if your looking for real games you'll need vita or 3ds
Only difference is physical controls and that smartphone/tablet gaming is catching up.
Good point bro! Remember in the early day of the iPhone how third party peripheral companies scrambled like crazy to develop the perfect physical controller add-on? Knowing Apple, they might be one announcement away from pulling out their proprietary gaming hardware attachment to market the iOS devices as a hardcore gaming device. And we know how people respond to Apple marketing. For Example: If Apple make their own iControl Pad http://www.youtube.com/watc...
I believe the Vita is also capable of playing games from the iOS, WP7 and Andriod because its integrated to the PS Suite isn't it? So I don't know what these analyst and devs are worried about?
Vita wont have ios integration cause that would give people a choice instead of buying Apple h/w. Open Vita up to Android and you open the door to hacks from day 1. Is Sony really playing that game?
Good point. I'm not 100% sure about opening their systems to the other OS but there has been rumors that PS Suite will be available to Vita (again not confirmed) and PS Suite will be compatible with the apps of the OS mentioned. Again I don't have much proof of anything that's why I left what I said in a questioning state. ^^

I agree with you, BUT ... For the Vita to be successful, Sony must educate the mainstream gamer of these cool features. Sony needs demo units at every store and a large advertising push showcasing these features. Hopefully, Sony is up to the challenge, because I will be getting one day one - $250 is stupid cheap for this technology.
"For the Vita to be successful, Sony must educate the mainstream gamer of these cool features." ^ This Lets hope Sony nails it down this time and not just go "It only does everything" without explaining much and confuses the not in the know crowd.
Get off your Sony soapbox. Vita has everything to prove. Furthermore, do you think that smartphones will stand still for the next 5 years just cause the Vita will?
Nice try Sony PR guy.
The real ones messing the handle gaming devices are the companies that make the games! They want easy profit made by shity and low budget games like does you see in Ipad and mobile devices. If something is turning is not us the gamers that want full game experience that can only be provide by handle gaming devices with proper controls like Nintendo and Sony machines, the problem comes from Publishers like EA,..... that dont want to invest the money needed to make great games, and are starting a trend of letting down support for handle gaming devices just for the sake of cheap profit.Do they really believe that hardcore gamers are going to shift from a proper gaming control device to a fucking retarded device that have lack of proper gaming controls, and suffer from lag input on touch. For playing,NEVER!
Smaller dev teams, faster to market and wider audience appeal. Takes gaming back to the good ole days when corps didnt run the show. If anything the days of the big budget games are numbered except for a select few.
EA talks too much. What are they soothsayers or something? Who asked them for warnings? Since when is EA so intrested in the welfare of the handhelds? Just go and develop for the IPAD like we know you want to and stay out of it. A tablet and mobile have no joysticks or triggers the very things that make gaming easy to control and varied.Call us GAMERS when you have those things. Until then STFU about tablet and mobile gaming.
EA is one of the biggest gaming companies along with activision. If Sony or Nintendo lost support from these two giants, it would be game over for Vita and 3DS. Too many gamers talk smack about EA & Activision, but if either released a console, you could wave bye-bye to Nintendo and Sony's game consoles. EA have an investment in these handhelds & Sony & Nintendo will bend over backwards to please them. Platform holders no longer have control. It is the third parties that are in control now.
That is so much BS.You think some developer could release a console and beat Sony and Nintendo, the ones who have been doing this for years? Microsoft couldn't even take first place from either one of them and are still stuck in the middle. You overestimate them. Sony and Nintendo have first party and third party developers to do their bidding.EA and Activision are still just developers. If the platforms dropped either one of them that is a whole chuck of their profit gone. hey better stop the talking and remember who it is that put them up there instead of talking down to them.
Do you realise how much money Sony and Nintendo would lose in licensing fees from EA and Activision? For Sony, this is where they make their money. If they were to lose the money from Activision/EA's yearly franchises it would cripple them. Sony sell hardware at a loss and recoup these losses through Software licensing fees and sales. Nintendo could put up more of a fight but Mario and the gang will only get them so far. Activision & EA could easily release their own console. They aren't some developer. These two are publishing giants. They make more money than Sony does from gaming by a huge margin. You talk up Sony's first party studios, however, whilst amazing as they are, these games don't sell as much as Nintendo or Microsoft's exclusives and pale in comparison to EA & Activision's franchise.
you forgot the /s
The dedicated gaming market is shrinking fast because of these Tablets and Smartphones. Recent data back this up fully. If you look at the numbers and demographics it is very telling as to where "mobile" gaming is heading...for better or for worse.
I find hard to believe tht core gamers casual or not are trading in hanhelds to ply games on tablets and phones thts bullshit. Those markets are gaining revenue in games bcus more ppl can buy them now but not bcus gamers are choosing over systems to ply games. Make a handhelp ppl want like vita and thy will buy.
I think this guy is right. I think nintendo was going by old trends and made the 3ds not taking into account of iphones and other smart phones. I notice alot of 18-35 year olds gaming on their phones, i dont think anyone carryies handhelds and a bunch of cartridges around anymore except maybe 10 year olds on vacation. My thing is ps3 and 360 look so good on my 60" mitsubishi...i got no desire to play a game on a 4" screen. Plus portable gaming is uncomfortable, arms all curled up holding a little gizmo a foot away from my face.....you ever try playing a portable on a bed or in a car,....no thank you. I'll play my games on my consoles and porn on my iphone and face book on my ipad......there u go death of portables. Kudos to sony for trying to make some doe but i think it is a wild goosechase. There was one article by nintendo saying it is hard to make 8bit games into 3d.......that was awesome!.....i guess a little a research would have been a good idea. Watching nintendo squirm is priceless!....its almost as funny as ps2 stomping out the dreamcast and ps1 squashing the sega saturn.....beautiful!! When i heard nintendo slashed 3ds price i damn near pissed my pants. Puny nintendo!!
FCK YOU EA!!!! All these guys care about is the money. Hate these guys. They're turning Battlefield into a casual cash cow along with Medal of Honor. you heard it from me.
Well Nintendo, Try and get a COD game released for the 3DS and boom... goes the dynamite.
Simple and obvious solution really.... They need to make phone versions of both platforms! I'd be MUCH more likely to go and buy a Vita Phone on day one, than get Vita within the first year of it coming out! Vita looks awesome, but I would not want to be carrying it around with me unless I was specifically going somewhere that it was needed. But I carry a HTC Desire phone with me everywhere I go so it would be no problem to swap it for a Vita Phone! I was messing about with a workmates xperia the other day, and if there was a Vita version I think it would sell extremely well... but the xperia holds no appeal to me at all!
