Iwata provides some interesting reasons behind the 3DS price cut, reveals that he'll be seeing a salary cut along with other executives, and much more. Check out all of the details from Nintendo's earnings briefing that just wrapped up.
buying new just doesn't even make sense anymore. Thats why I haven't bought an Ipad yet, the Ipad 3 comes out a year or so later with more features, and to top it off, even cheaper than the first iPad. Unless you got tons of money, then it just seems like an insane gesture to buy anything new anymore.
i 100% agree with you nintendo guilty of this too. DS,DSLite,DSi,DSiXL,and now 3DS come on.
i have no idea what the difference is between any of those with the exception of the 3DS
PSP,PSP2000,PSP300,PSP g, Vita etc.. NIntendo isnt the only one guilt of doing that.
@Seferoth75 thank you, And dont forget the playstation phone... sony is just as guilty at least nintendo threw in extra features. notice this one as well Nintendo Wii 2006-2011 no change. Sony> ps3 20, 40, 60, 80 or 160 GB. Ps3 slim Microsoft xbox 360, all the revisions new xbox 360...
"salary reduction for Iwata along with other executive" Yes because ¥68 million ($0.77m) a year cant fit in his bank account anymore -_- These big CEO's make me sick and Nintendo for going all casual this gen makes me hate them even more. Edit: I see your point but the reason why those big bankers did not take a pay cut and were spending money like it was rice is because the money did not belong to them but belong to other people. Iwata on the other hand is part owner of Nintendo and if the Big N sinks then he sinks as well.
Hey, I respect the guy for taking a 50% pay cut... The other executives took a 30% one. I don't see execs in the U.S. doing that. During the bailout period they were flying private jets and taking limos to the meetings until people got pissed off. Then the bankers went ahead and paid out fat bonuses with bailout money...
At least he took a damn pay cut. In America when the corporations mess up and cripple the entire global economy, the CEOs beg the government for bailouts, get 800 billion USD to save their companies and their workers, and instead they reward themselves with multi-million dollar bonuses. Iwata's 50 percent paycut is a sign of humility and honor, two virtues that the Japanese still possess despite the spread of Western capitalism.
Bloody fool microsony. How dare you comment here.
As of June 30th 2010: "Sega Sammy Holdings CEO Osamu Satomi earns ¥435 million a year (US$4.9 million) Sony CEO Howard Stringer earns ¥816.5 million a year (US$9.2 million) Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda earns ¥164.39 million a year (US$1.85 million) (Includes all of Sony) Namco Bandai Holdings president Kazunori Ueno earns ¥137 million a year (US$1.5 million) Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada earns ¥240 million a year (US$2.7 million)." The fact that they are 'only' making $750k a year shows that they are not the greedy type like Sega. Sony exec makes alot, but they are like microsoft, they have more product lines, not just video games. Oh and while I'm at it "Meanwhile in the US, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick received US$3,151,008 in compensation, as well as netting nearly US$40 million from stock sales." Bobby is defenitely hurting from used game sales, and it shows. /sarcasm
Very true, but it's up to the consumer to make a stand!
ipad 4 comes out in 2012 september so why get the ipad 3?
My goodness, how the tables have turned.
Haha, I thought you said tablets... That would have been kinda funny.
It's interesting to know that the people at the highest positions are getting pay reductions.
Wow looks like theyre really banking on the WII U
I dont think the Wii U will have the Wii effect. MS E3 show is proof of that. All hardcore gamers including my self hated MS show but the did exaclty what they wanted to do and they have succeeded and when the 2nd wave of Kinect games hit you will see what MS goal for E3 was.
The reason they are dropping the price off the 3DS is because it's STILL not selling well because, news flash, not everyone is all about the crappy 3d gimmick. They are taking a serious loss and now they're praying that people will waste their money on the Wii U. I've been saying this and I'll keep saying it. The next console Nintendo releases will crush them. They'll make no money on it and people wont care. Nintendo's time as a console maker is running out very fast. Whats sad is the not even the hardcore nintendo fans can help them.
should i wake him up? Nahh. he seems so happy just sleeping there.
The hell are you talking about? He's right, the 3DS is doing terribly. Stop being foolish, even Nintendo knows it's not doing well, and nobody cares about the Wii U, they just wanna make jokes about it. A $80 price drop in only 4 months isn't because they want to it's because they have to. They'll be taking a serious loss more than they already are, but they're hoping people will be drawn in by the price. I don't think they will be.
these things are determined by shareholders. and I'm convinced it has more to do with them thinking it's overpriced because Vita is the same price, more than it deal with the near 5 mill sales of the 3DS. Also he says Nintendo's time as a console maker is running out fast with no proof to back up his claims
HAAAAAAAAASHAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAA f*cken funny man hes dreamin
I'm not sure where you guys are coming from, but lets add up these factors: - 3DS had poor marketing - Poor launch line up - 3D Is bad for your eye sight stigma - Expensive Price Point - Was released in March And it's sold nearly 4 million already. In under 4 months. How is that selling terribly? It's selling better than the original DS in the same time frame, at twice the price, in a less stable economy. Now that the price reduction has come in, and there's going to be a tidal wave of popular franchise games in Q3/Q4, the thing is going to sell like hot cakes. As much as you try to hate on the thing it's here to stay.
- Was released in March ^ This True the price point couldn't be justified especially after it was found that the 3DS only cost $101 or so to manufacture. Good point on the economy, the bad economy is a major factor to consider add the Earthquake factor in Japan to that as well.
@Optical_Matrix Just giving you a heads up in the future about sales talk, look at the sales trend, for future references, or in other words, consistency.
I think that you will find the 3DS is actually MEETING Nintendo's sales forecast, and is outselling the DS at the same point in its lifecycle. The reason that they are making losses is because if the Wii and DS - however, they have recently lowered the price of those, and can't do it again so soon. Nintendo have quite a large line-up of games coming - games that WILL sell well, so I don't think that Nintendo are worried about the 3DS as much as people think. What they are trying to assure, however, is that will lower Wii and DS sales, they want the 3DS sales to EXCEED their forecast, to push higher software sales and keep the shareholders (that were once used to the Wii and DS exceeding forecasts and are now faced with the fact that won't be the case anymore) happy.
WoW, that was fast, from stinking rich to plain stinking.
CEOs... high ranking executives... taking salary cuts? CULTURE SHOCK!
Dude probably makes most of his money from stock options. Salary is his worst case fallback income if the stock plummets.
one lesson to learn from this, dont ever abandon your core audience, the casuals will not follow nintendo into the next gen and most of the core really hated ninty over the whole wii incident, fact it it took two generations for sony to get arrogant but they never abandoned the core, it only took nintendo 1 and they abandoned the very people that kept them afloat before the wii, now kinect has stolen the casuals im betting ninty will really struggle this gen
Nintendo really need to make some new ips.
you need glasses....now they do need to bring some from japan to the usa...lol.
since the announcement of the wiiu nintendo has been making all the right moves...getting all third party support for wiiu, triple a games on the 3ds and a price...they are in position to win next gen
triple a games on the 3ds? Where are these games you speak of? All I see is a pilotwings game that isn't all that much like pilotwings. A zelda remake, a kid icarus game that isn't all that much like kid icarus, a resident evil game that is essentially a packed in minigame sold for 40 dollars, a smash bros game that hasn't even started with development, rayman 3d which is just a port of a 12 year old game. The 3DS software library sucks. It will be much better at some point, but as of right now it's horrible.
He is doing what is right and keeps the company running. Once they pick up the pace he is rewarding himself with a 250% salary payment. xD
I hope that the salary cuts began, and were the greatest, at Nintendo of America... morons.
sony are now cutting the ram in the vita down to 256 to save money aswell, prob wont cut the price tho lol
Sony was already selling it at a loss. 250 for the vita is cheap as can be. 250 for the 3DS was grossly overpriced. Hell, I bought mine in asia and it was 350. The 3DS is a neat handheld but it really isn't impressive. The system menu is subpar, the screen scratches easily and the online store is still a mess. Plus, the software library is a complete joke. I think it's good that nintendo is having a nice serving of humble pie, maybe now they'll pull their head out of their rear and actually put forth an effort when it comes to software, online capabilities, and supporting 3rd parties.
