Not to Worry: NPD Numbers Still Coming

Yesterday the internet exploded with the news that the NPD Group would no longer be releasing monthly videogame sales data to the media. While it initially looked like the world may be at peace without sales data to fuel fanboy battles, the console wars will (for better or worse) be continuing.

The NPD Group is only halting the free data it gives out to general media. Outlets that pay for the data, like IGN, will continue to receive monthly sales figures. NPD told us it was a business decision to protect the research firm's interests.

So, not to worry. You can still look forward to monthly console wars here on IGN.

Alright so IGN is a paying customer for NPD data. Well done indeed. The war rages on.

PS3 Limps on and on3575d ago (Edited 3575d ago )

I wouldn't miss November and December sales for the world. Need to know if PS3 is making a stand or dying off. I think this is the last stand for PS3.

The only sales that really matter are North American. PS3 will probably be fine in Europe and Japan. But if it dies off in NA, it dies off everywhere eventually.

Does NPD care if their paying customers such as IGN release the data to the general public?

Rooftrellen3575d ago

That's what gets me.

Obviously, MS, Sony, and Nintendo are getting the data (and I believe that was always a given), at least one of them is going to give the numbers to the public.

Then all companies that pay for it get the monthly numbers, and one would imagine it's going to get out like that, too.

So then what difference does it make, to restrict the numbers from being just given to everyone, anyway?

The only difference is that we're getting it from a source that got it from the NDP, anyway. And, if they do plan on saying those people can't publish the numbers, it'll just leak down another level.

We'll get the numbers, no matter what, so long as they give them to anyone.
