Stop With The Updates Already - Is DLC Killing Gaming?

Megabits of Gaming writes: "Is value for money a thing of the past? Certainly, the world of gaming has changed; longevity has been replaced with brevity. Call me cynical but nowadays the full retail version of a game seems almost a temporary stop gap until some costly DLC or the inevitable annual update becomes available."

Except for one that was like $3, all of Arkham Asylum DLC was free too.

I would describe updates and DLC as 2 different things.

Updates being like how new features were added to a game like MAG, DLC being new levels/maps as optional paid for content

It used to be: Make a game. Continously update this game to attract more buyers. Use the revenue of the game to make new games. Rinse and repeat.

By time, things change. People have to realise this. Purchaseable DLC is now an integrated part of most major franchises. I have actually never bougth a DLC myself, simply because I dislike how things have changed. The DLC is not better than the previous free content updates. They just put a price tag on it.

I don't see why people with consoles complaint though. You pay subscription fees to play on a P2P network. Obviously you don't care about it to begin with. Atleast PC users actually cash out money for real dedicated servers and not host advantages.

this ^

It boggles the mind that people are willing to pay for their bandwidth twice... once to the ISP and then again to MS :S

I don't mind updates if they upgrade the game or fixes things.

The unending DLCs and Special editions though I feel is just too much sometimes.

Can't we just get a game with minor DLCs and get a sequel instead of another edition instead?

It kills game quality a little bit
