Open Letter to Notch

"Dear Notch,

I just came across the interview Ars Technica did with Re-Logic and with me on our games Terraria and FortressCraft, respectively. They invited you to say a few words about the games. Normally you’re quite recalcitrant to comment on FortressCraft, so I was pleased to see that that you’d written about it. I was quite a lot less pleased when I read the content, though :"

Isn't FortressCraft useless now since Minecraft is coming to the Xbox...not like I care it was a clone on the game anyway.

HK62251d ago

Just because they are in the same genre and the genre was popularized by Minecraft, does not mean every single game made after Minecraft in this genre is a ripoff. Going by your logic, every FPS after Wolfenstein 3D is a ripoff of it.

WhiteLightning2251d ago (Edited 2251d ago )

Except they don't use the same concept or gameplay mechanics from Wolfenstein in every other FPS.....or even same name

You know

FortressCRAFT
MineCRAFT

Come on, it's basicaly a clone with a few things notch hasn't added...yet. To be honest you can rely on mods for extra stuff which notch is going to be supporting in the next update. Terraria is in Minecraft's genre but it's different, Fortresscraft isn't....it's basicaly Minecraft for the Xbox.

Emilio_Estevez2251d ago (Edited 2251d ago )

Do you even know what either of them are? It is a complete rip-off. No doubts about it. This is what Notch said as I'm assuming you didn't read it..
"FortressCraft is an obvious attempt to just take something popular and clone it as closely as possible." And he said that right after praising Terraria for taking Minecraft as inspiration and he was proud to be part of it's heritage.

@WhiteLightning
"Except they don't use the same concept or gameplay mechanics from Wolfenstein in every other FPS"

You are joking right? Moving around in a 3D world with a first person view shooting people. I would say that the base of the gameplay is exactly the same. Also, by your naming logic, Gears of War is a ripoff of God of War because they both end with "of War". It is in the same genre, it is not a clone as stated before. Terraria is a 2D take on the same genre yes. FortressCraft is not just "Minecraft for the Xbox", that will be coming out later this year.

@DrStabwounds
I own both and have played both lots. I am well aware what both of them are. I read the entire thing as I am the one that submitted it here. Did you read any of the stuff Arcas had to say? It doesn't seem like it.

@HK6 You sir, are a f***ing moron.

No...these things are what make a FPS a FPS, you don't see Half life with Nazi enemies do you or the goal of Halo is to reach an elevator to finish a level. Each game adds differen't things to set it's self apart...or at least TRY to.

The sad part is that Arcas can't admit that it's a clone, he took an idea, added a few things of his own and made money off it. Terraria is it's own game with the amount of content in the game and the way it plays you can see it was only influenced by Minecraft NOT a clone of it unlike FortressCraft to Minecraft

Oh and the name....I'm not saying every game with the same name is going to be the same but at the end of the day it dosen't help does it. He obviously put "Craft" at the end so it would sell better.

Does it matter anyway your not going to listen, look at your profile "FortressCraft Lead Tester", not like you would actually admit that it's a clone.

Building/deleting blocks while moving around in a world built out of blocks is what makes the block building genre the block building genre. Total Miner, FortressCraft, Minecraft, and Terraria all use that same concept as a base for the game.

"The sad part is that Arcas can't admit that it's a clone, he took an idea, added a few things of his own and made money off it. Did you even read the article? Have you ever played the game? It is in the credits stating that Minecraft is an inspiration as well as other gamee. Terraria "took the idea" removed a dimension and added a few ideas.

"Oh and the name....I'm not saying every game with the same name is going to be the same but at the end of the day it dosen't help does it. He obviously put "Craft" at the end so it would sell better. "

So Total Miner put "Mine" in the name to make sales better as well?

"Does it matter anyway your not going to listen, look at your profile "FortressCraft Lead Tester", not like you would actually admit that it's a clone."

If I wasn't listening I wouldn't be here debating with you.

I haven't played FortressCraft, neither do I intend to. Simply because I am bored of the genre. It's a sandbox world with little to do. I do however, agree with Arcas, that not every type of these games is a Minecraft clone. FortressCraft is however, a Minecraft clone. It's like saying Heroes of Newerth isn't a DotA clone, because it offers different content after taking the entire concept and put their own original ideas into it.

FortressCraft is a Minecraft clone and unless he changes the basic concept of the game, it will continue to be so - wether FortressCraft supporters like it or not. Besides, let the numbers speak this war when Minecraft comes to Xbox.

koehler832250d ago

Sorry dude. FortressCraft is a Minecraft clone.

bodybombs2250d ago

i would probably care if fortresscraft were any fun in the first place

Kellexx2250d ago

Arguing that FortressCraft isn't a Minecraft clone is like arguing that there aren't any WoW clones. When I first saw someone playing FortressCraft, I thought it was just Minecraft with mods.

Calling Minecraft unoriginal then listing minute differences suggests DjArcas hasn't heard the expression "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." It also makes him look like a whiny little baby.

Go ahead and argue it if you want. People will stop calling it a clone when it proves itself different somehow. So nut up or shut up.
