Sony freedom allowed Media Molecule to flourish

Sony stuck by Media Molecule when most other publishers would have cut their losses and walked away, the studio's creative director has said.

Both Mark Healey and fellow Media Molecule co-founder Kareem Ettouney state that Sony played a crucial role in the development of LittleBigPlanet.

"Making a project that has a very long service tail requires a lot of support, and Sony were really behind that," Ettouney told VideoGamer.com at Develop last week.

"I think they were good at being very hands-off in the early stages," added Healey. "We were a new company, and they helped us a lot with the setting up of that, which was a whole issue in itself.

Same with Heavy Rain,
Flower and Journey.
They even took a chance with LA Noire,
20mil worth of a chance.

I love when companies allow their developers creative freedom, doesnt matter if its Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo, its just good for gamer all around.

Stories about Sony helping to set up independent development houses are common. Just now Sony Santa Monica is actively supporting LightBox Interactive to build their business and develop StarHawk. I wouldnt be surprised if something similar is happening with Sleep and Play (David Jaffe) developing Twisted Metal. It is known SSM is helping them out.

the more this type of thing happens the better for us, we need originality in games or they will become stagnent, dosnt matter which company does it as long as there are companies that do.

Actually if im correct Media Molecule (before they made Little Big Planet) went to microsoft first and got rejected, and then that's when they decided to goto Sony for there idea's and Sony had apparently taken them in soooo, in the long run microsoft screwed themselves over and given us PS3 owners two great games and a new game genre (Play, create, share)...... Sony, for the WIN!!!

Interesting.. I had never heard of that story about Microsoft and Media Molecule but some of them used to work for Lionhead so it would kinda make sense.

I'm hoping MM move away from LBP for a bit now. I'm looking forward to seeing what else they can do.
