Itagaki: Japanese devs lack social skills

If Japanese developers want to better compete with Western studios they need to hone their social skills, according to former Team Ninja boss Tomonobu Itagaki.

"It's important to have the skill to express what you're doing, what you want to do - you know, express yourself. I'm talking about social skills," he explained. "Japanese developers, they don't have the necessary social skills. The American social skills, European social skills."
"You know, maybe they don't have humor; they don't know how to joke around. Maybe it's a problem with their manner. Well if you wear shades inside the building all day and call your subordinates 'baga' they wont know if your playing or really calling them idiots cause they cant see your bloody eyes. Thats not how western devs operate.

Truth is western influences have hindered some japanese games especially when you look at genres that people liked for being very asian centric. Many genres are also getting dumbed down to cater for a wider audience. Both have their pitfalls

Stop making emo games with fancy preteens heroes. They don't sell. Look at all the games that are selling, they have a completely opposite character design. The Japanese used to be master at character designs but now they suck.

I don't know, the pretty-boy look is pretty popular in Japan (just take a look at most of Japan's male celebrities). The look might not be as popular over here, but it sells very well in Japan. Especially amongst female gamers. They swarm to games with pretty protagonists.

There's a reason celebrities like Gackt ( ) and Arashi ( ) are used so often to market games. They're extremely popular and have proven to boost sales.
