Firmware version 2.0 - Official press release

Following is the official press release from Sony on Firmware Update 2.00 (available for download 8 November). On top of the ability to turn the PlayStation 3 on remotely via the PSP, Version 2.00 also allows the creation of playlists in both the music and photo sections, giving users an opportunity to create unlimited music playlists, as well as sharing favourite photos in high definition.

Version 2.00 also allows for customisation of the XMB menu screen, with the ability to change the colour and brightness or to set a completely different custom theme. Moreover, there's the addition of an Information Board on XMB to keep users up to date on the latest PlayStation news, the inclusion of a new PlayStation Network category and logo for easier navigation and Trend Micro Web Security, a free2, state of the art internet security system.

Here's what I think:

Sony's business strategy is to maximize revenue for the company. That's a given. They've recently released the slimmer PSP. Clearly they want to firmly justify to the consumer that PSP is *the* portable console to buy. I think Sony is serious about PSP-PS3 connectivity so that they can make the PSP ever more attractive.

Now, would including in-game XMB access have an equal or greater impact on Sony's revenues? Would it have a greater impact on PS3 sales? Probably not. One would need to be a marketeer for Sony to really understand the situation.

Anyway, my point is, now that PSP-PS3 connectivity options have broadened, the next big update will be the much anticipated in-game XMB. At least I hope so.

you know, now that i think of it, and im very dissapointed in this update, i think in game XMB access and music player will be some how related to home...and its probably being coded to work with home. Thats why the features of update 2.00 are just kinda lame.

Remember what sony was saying about being able to launch a game from home with the XMB access. Its probably all connected and we wont get those features until home arrives...coincidence that the center button on the ps3 pad is called "home" and when you press it, some kind of home interface comes on?

Since May, I was highly anticipating the "mysterious 2.0 update." Sony knows it, we know it. FW 2.0 was the highest anticipated firmware ever to release on PS3, and this is by far the biggest disappointment. I can change the colour of the XMB? I can turn on my PS3 with remote play? Where the $%&* is my in-game XMB??

It's not what I wanted exactly. But for PSP owners this is a dream. I've got a bunch of videos saved on my hard drive and now I'm able to watch them all without using up all of my space on the memory stick. Sweet.

No in game XMB sucks I admit, but Remote play for PSP makes up for it.

To manually reload a weapon press the direction on the D=pad that matches the weapon you want to reload EG down is for the handgun so press down to reload it ( you would be surprised how many people dont know this)

Try doing a local game to where you're playing by yourself or with one of your buddies, so you can get the hang of the controls. Also if you go to setup, there's an option for controls and it'll show you what each button does.

I finally realize that Nintendo and Microsoft Exec. are running Sony. I mean every time Sony has a chance to do something good to increase their user base the F#@% it up. WTH do I need a photo playlist for? I hope they mean video that's what I REALLY want as I have tv episodes (clone high ftw) stashed on my PS3 and I want to keep them playing sequentially while I work. The intarweb is on fire with no ingame XMB. I just saw the pics and while obviously not what we all wanted, what's there is still pretty cool. They've already touched more of the 360's dashboard functionality with the themes, now all we need is the music and the messaging and no one can say anything else.

I'm actually excited about the playlists, and it happens to be the one biggest feature I've wanted added since I got the console. The music side is more obvious, because scrolling through thousands of songs is a pain, regardless of how you organize them. But with photos, it's just as crucual. As of right now, you can only organize photos by the month they were taken. So, if I have all of my pictures from a convention on there, and then all of my pictures from a trip, and then a bunch of wallpapers or something I've uploaded, all within the same month, I have NO WAY to seperate them during slide shows, which sucks, and is now apparantly fixed. I agree, a video playlist would be great too, because I have all of my episodes of Home Movies and RvB on there, and just being able to queue them up and watch them sequentially would be nice.

For all of the "this is it!"s and "final straw"s above though; it's one feature. And believe me, I fully understand how stupidly annoying it is to have to back out of a game to read a message, but . . . seriously, that's reason enough for you to become enraged? I never recalled Sony saying it'd come with 2.00, and though I hoped like everyone else, you can't blame them for how we hype and project what we want to see. Hopefully, it's still there. If not, hopefully it'll come with HOME. Hopefully it'll come at all. And maybe for the more social it's more essential, but I hardly find it fault enough to get upset.

I'm not as disappointed as some of you but I really want to play my own music in a game and answer my friends when they message me during my online play. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that Sony will surprise us but it's most likely not going to happen. At least I'll have the Uncharted demo.

have never used xbox live to ask such a question. ingame XMB just like xbox live is about comfort or customization. You must have never grew up in the n64/playstation/dreamcast era where gamers would mute the tv and play their own music. The ability to make your custom soundtrack over your favorite game is something gamers have done since the Nes/genesis era, now with new technology the ability to play your game and your music from 1 device is a God send. Also cross game chat is the best. If you were born before 1990 u understand. anytime after u may not know how important this is to gamers.

The fact that the network just can't cope with it. Multiple servers, although dedicted which is nice, can't connect through XMB or something like that. They just can't get it done it seems. Because if they waited one year, why wouldn't it take another year, two years... or never?

So it's not to overcome myself. If something is worth it, it's worth it. THat's why I have stated multiple times, then the white PS3 is here, with a rumble controller in the package, with Home/a good online system is there and games like MGS4, GT5, KZ2 aren't delayed (coming 2nd half 2008) and God of War 3 will be here, plus the advantage at the end of 2008 the thing will cost 200 to 300 Euro, that's the time to buy a PS3. Now is the time to own a 360 (white) and add a white PS3 Christmas 2008. It's even more wise to buy a white PS2 this Christmas with God of War 2!

The core is there. Have you played a PS3 game online yet? Aside from a couple features unique to live, it is the same. You get a great experience for free. Like I have said in previous post, there isn't any lag and most of the same features are there. I remember the issue with multiple buddy list. I have warhawk, resistance and motorstorm. All of which use the same master list. So, there isn't a problem.

I think that Sony didn't "get" it at first when it came to Live. They aren't as experienced as MS in regards to online. I do think that Home will have these "missing" features and a lot more added. It was supposed to be out right now. But it is a huge undertaking to get it off the ground. So, I am making an educated guess that 2.0 was supposed to have home and all these features, but they needed more time to get it right.

I hope that your memory hasn't failed you in that Live wasn't the same when it came out. It has evolved greatly.

Anyway, by the time you get over yourself and get the PS3 you won't have any of these issues.

Seeing that it is still in the works, I would say that it will be with home in the spring.

What is really crap is that you cannot quit an 360 game and go back to the dashboard. Every time I want to finish a game and go back to the dashboard, maybe checkout the demos, or load an arcade game, I need to reboot the console. How crap is that?

With the PS3 I can press the PS button and choose to quit the game, going back to the XMB. Very nice.

The 360 has plenty of stuff wrong with its dashboard, funny how some fanboys forget that. It is rubbish how it is organised, it takes forever to find a demo or arcade game, because the same games and demos are listed multiple times in multiple lists, most of the screenspace is taken up with ads, and you can't even buy anything without going through a whole convoluted process of buying points and then spending points on what you wanted, which are never in the same nomination as the point bundles. It also looks like it was designed in some pre school class, and you have to pay to change it with pre prepared themes.

Whenever I turn off the PS3 and load up the 360 it is a real miserable experience. Its like a kids toy, hardly a next generation console.

I have to ask where is the update? How do we know that the PS3 will offer a firmware update for BR 1.1 and beyond? I searched the entire Sony PS3 site. I fired off 2 e-mails to Sony support. I think it would be uber cool if that feature could be added as a firmware update.
Here I am days later and no reply from Sony PS3 support.
I called PS3 support a few nights ago (Call them yourself 800-345-7669). They have no idea if the new 40GB PS3 will support BR 1.1. I confirmed that they know what 1.1 is, but they can not guarantee that the 40GB PS3 will support the new features. I asked for a manager and he gave me the same response. So I now throw down the Gauntlet, Please show me some info out there where Sony is confirming and posting that my investment today is protected for the future....

yeah.. this totally sucks.. but in all honesty, as stated above, I thought all of this stuff would have been available when the home universe was launched. Well actually the integrated friends list, but the music should be here, and really it should considering there are some games that already implement it. But i digress, back in may and when home was announced, I thought the connectivity would have been brough through home, so im still waiting for the home launch, hopefully this will answer all questions.

MUSIC PLAYLIST

With over 200 Albums on the PS3 hard drive, having a custom playlist is an fantastic addition.

Now you can create your own 2pac or Beatles or Janet Jackson mix playlist and it's makes having those 200 albums on the system a huge advantage so kudos for that!

INFORMATION BAR

This is just critical.... The one thing that makes Xbox live so exciting is the dashboard. It always have different elements of marketing rather if its a new hot *Xbox Live Arcade Game That has hit* or The Matrix Trilogy releasing on HD-DVD or maybe the new Hottest Mass Effect Demo hitting the Market place, Microsoft has always had the ability to market to there own consumer to let them know whats going on. Now Playstation has that reach and it's just exciting to see that type of marketing element added to the XMB. Now it won't be just boring.

PSP FUNCTIONALITY

Another huge addition, now when your own the road or any where in the world, you can easily connect and turn on your PS3 and check out those kool videos or that kool music playlist that you may have. Only the playstation family can provide you with thise kind of innovation. Not even the Mighty Ipod has that ability.

Now we all know Ingame XMB and ingame messaging is on it's way, we just have to be patient! Remember all of this is for free and when home arrives it will be the final 1-2 punch of the competitor.

the people wining about it would actually be justified, but they made no such statements. I want it just as much as anyone here, but this is still a great update. I've been dying for playlists and albums for the music on my PS3, and the PSP connectivity helps me a LOT since i have a PSP. Getting to access my PS3 while I'm at school or work is so sweet, and I don't even have to leave it on? I can turn it on remotely? WHOA.

Am I the only person in the world who doesn't care at all about in-game XMB? Especially in-game soundtracks. Yeha, it'd be nice in games like Motorstorm and GTA, but that's about it. Maybe it's because I'm in college specifically to study game development and I appreciate the costs and labor involved with making game music, but I think that if a dev decided that certain music is good for the game, its good enough for us too. The only thing I'm even a little interested in is in game messaging, which can ALREADY BE IMPLEMENTED by devs if they so choose.

I knew In-Game XMB would never come on 2.0, you guys remember the so called GAME 3.0 !!! that phil harrison was talkin about in E3 (i think it was there) ..

In-game XMB is not very important to me… **BUT** I completely agree with so many people being upset here.

When you buy in to the most expensive game console on the market (vs. Wii and 360) - you expect the BEST experience and feature set right out of the box. At the very least, you expect critical features like this sooner than a year after release.

Generally, higher priced items provide the most benefit. Hence the saying “You get what you pay for.” However, currently, the PS3 does not follow this rule. When observing PS3 sales trends, it becomes obvious that the public is not dumb to the fact that the PS3 defies the norm of price and quality.

Put it this way - how would a BMW owner (PS3) feel if the much cheaper Ford (360) had MORE and BETTER features? Sure it breaks down more often, but the 360 has a better community and better set of features - there is no denying that.

As it stands now, the 360 is cheaper and provides a better feature set. I only own a PS3, so no trolling here.

Sony really should've left this update as a .01 upgrade and have 2.00 to be worked on overtime, without any word about it. Sony knew we all wanted in-game XMB, so there was no reason to call THIS the legendary FW 2.00. Don't get me wrong, this is a great update, It's just not what we truly wanted. This shouldn't have been known as FW 2.00 and instead 1.95 or something else.

I listened to a live blog yesterday from a video game insider. A Sony insider and he stated that his company was doing terrible and even he couldn't believe in what sony was doing.

He stated that he had purchased 13 games, all of which were better on the 360, except for Warhawk, Heaven and the games that are PS3 only........but even he stated that they are not amazing games by any means.

Just another string of so so titles.

COD4 is the difference. For the first time you have a game that is equal on the consoles. Better than the pc!

How can you be disapointed in an Update? If you thought in game xmb was coming without an official word from sony, thats your problem. This update has added more fuctionallity to the Ps3 and the more things added the better as in my view in increases the value of the console to me.

Remember folks, - don't take stuff you read on the internet as 100% facts
