Ever wonder how Sony originally won the hearts of millions of gamers away from Nintendo back in the original Playstation days? Here's why!
Good stories and lots of great games.
I don't think it's just Sony but that whole generation was awesome. If it wasn't for all those games, I probably like most of you still wouldn't be playing today
@Buttclown Exactly, Sony were good but many people forget that the Saturn was released before the PSX. Saturn had the superior hardware, but was harder to code for...a lot harder. Only devs to get most from it, no surprises here were Sega. Shame really, i have fond memories of both consoles though so its all good.
@caseh-Saturn had much better tech but only REALLY could show it in the 2D realm and wasn't cut out for the(now hideous to look at!)3D games the PS1 was made for. I think it was just a typical Sega oversight-once they wrecked our heads with the Genesis/Megadrive add ons(and Megadrive is STILL the console closest to my heart for it's initial run)they stumbl;ed, though I loved the consoles myself, from disaster to disaster./ CD add ons, the DC and all that. They always had ambition(see Shenmue)but no direction. Seriously, had Suzuki been at ninty or Son just what would he have managed? It's THAT tye of talent that their mad decisions caused grief to. Bloody Sega!
Favorite PlayStation game: Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete I don't think I've ever had a game burn itself into my brain as that one did. Other games like Driver Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy IX Digimon World Digimon World 2 Digimon World 3 Legend of Dragoon Mega Man X4 Chocobo's Dungeon 2 Spyro Crash Bandicoot Croc: Legend of the Gobbo's Wild Arms were amazing as well.
That first Spyro was cool as and if anyone mentions LoD again i will definitely start crying. I always loved Capcom's first two PS Dino Crisis games better than RE as well. I got into an argument(which everyone else in the world thinks I lost but they're wrong)about which games, ever, were the best movie/comic tie in games and, I know I'll get hate for this but I maintain it's NOT just a guilty pleasure-I miss the Blade games!! The end boss of the PS1 original was cool and difficult while the PS2 game for the next movie was a great actioner with some great level design for the trademark Glaive and lopping off dancing Vamps heads in the Vamp disco with lock on will always be one of my greatest gaming memories as it came at a time when money was scarce and I only had TS2(amazing game, no argument from anyone and along with future Perfect I think every bit as good as the first to Halo games(which I also love))and a Ratchet apart from it at one time! anyway, anyone else who remembers the Blade games with anything but total derision has my respect!! Back OT,though, I don't agree that PS1 games are as good a library as either Snes or PS2 but it's a close run thing and was a time where ideas were allowed to flow a bit more.
All consoles have good games that are still playable but to say playstation means this guy was born in the 90s. Screw fluff story's the guy should name games instead
If it wasn't for PS1 and PS2, a lot of the great franchises we have today would have never existed. Thanks Sony and all the great devs that made it happened for so many years.
Bring back Syphon Filter, Dino Crisis, Rival Schools, Fighting Force, Gekido, etc. I could name tons more, but damn...PS1 was a way of life.
Best console of all time
SPYRO and CRASH forever
Yea those were the times with the really great platformers. Crash holds a place in my heart and so does Spyro, those are truly great games. Was also the era with the brilliant N64 platformers like Super Mario 64, Banjo & Kazooie (especially this one is terrific), Donkey Kong 64 etc. We don't really see alot of these high quality platformers these days, only Nintendo with their Mario games once in a while (which are also great btw). I guess there isn't a huge market for it anymore, which is kinda sad. Would love a new Crash on the PS3/PS4 and a new Banjo & Kazooie on the Xbox (since Microsoft now owns Rare, though Rare isn't that great anymore really) and a sequel to DK64 on the Wii U. My life would then be complete.
i love PSX and PS2 games. Still have very fond memories of the old Final Fantasies, DinoCrisis, IncredibleCrisis, Time Crysis, Point Blank, Pocket Fighter, Tekken and many more. Those were the good old days. Just on a side note i have been playing ancient PC games on my Laptop. And i am having a blast with Duke Nukeum, Hexen 2 and Doom.
i bought the original resi evil of psn a few weeks ago and am having a blast playing through it, tank controls and all, also abes exodus gets a mention.
Everyone overlooks the Super Nintendo CD and how epic it could have been. There are many people out there who consider the SNES to be best console ever, I for one would have loved to have seen a CD add-on for the SNES.
you did. it was called the playstation 1. where do you think the ps1 idea was made.
Well no, because Sony and nintendo have different ideals and franchises. We would have seen a new Zelda game for example and probably a bunch of games like Contra and Metroid on their CD based system. Could have been worlds apart from what the gamecube and wii offered.
I think we're all happy that PS1 came along AND Ninty STILL made Mazza64 and OoT while Sony bropught us Crash, Spyro and Ratchet as plattys. This way we got BOTH.
If anything many ps1 games don't stand the test of time compared to old generations.
Too true, I played Tekken for first time in years the other day. To say it looked UGLY would be an understatement lol. Was epic for its time though, lost many hours to that game.
To be honest, it looked ugly back then too, but the gameplay made up for it.
Many 3d games would not have been possible until the PSX. I do believe that without the PS gaming wouldn't be what it is today. PC gaming would probably be still huge right now for the only HD gaming you could get.
I was a massive PS1 fan and it had some really good games for it but I find my self playing more N64 classic games than PS1 game. I dont know if its because I did not have the N64. But I would like to see some more games like Crash, Syphon Filter, Dino Crisis, bushido blade and Parasite Eve. But I do think the PS1 has had by far the best Horror games ever made and I would like to see afew more of them come back this gen or next gen.
PS1 games definitely had TONS of replay value and almost each game was a unique experience, unlike today's games. Though the games were not extremely memorable, I know I had a blast back then when I had the system. Parents also got me the subscription for playstation underground so I was knee deep in demo's ^^ Though I don't think the games are "still" the best to play "now". They were gems back in their time but you gotta move on at some point :/ (well...except for Nintendo :p)
Yes, I agree with the replay value. A lot of games nowadays are great during one playthrough but that's all. While on PSone the times were better. But of course there are still games which are amazing today. But I totally get what your saying, I feel the same.
I say PS2 is better.. I have much more memories with it Jak and Daxter Kingdom Hearts Black Star Wars Battlefront 2 Bully The Warriors San Andreas Vice City Prince of Persia Spartan Total Warrior Socom and more..
Resident Evil 1,2,3 Legend Of Legaia All that Good $%@# "OG As A Mother" Loved those games up and down :)
Too many games these days. Games had way more impact back then. Besides, most games these days lack any "heart", in exchange for "ZOMG BIG BLOCKBUSTER ACTION MOMENTZ!" It's the same with movies. Modern movies are terrible in comparison to movies decades ago. Even the remakes of good movies are terrible.
Dont make games like they used to :(
Spyro. That is all.
i own so many, and still play them. im currently playing front mission 3 and xenogears. im still looking for valkyre profiles, it goes for over $200.00 in most places.
PS1 is the reason I came back to console gaming after a long hiatus. Suikoden II is my favorite game during that gen.
Oh god, the amount of hours I sunk into games during PS1/PS2 eras. I just wish this generation wasn't so lacking, especially the JRPGs.
I Remember "In The Hunt". IMO One Of The Greatest Games Ever Not Because Of Physics Or Graphics But Because I Had The Most Fun With It
Imagine if they made a game about gratuitous capital letter use, though, you'd LOVE it!
The birth of the playstation is very interesting, Nintendo's total lack of foresight is nothing unbeknownst to gamers and has caused them to shoot themselves in the foot a number of times, But at no time was it worse than when they had a hand in creating their worst competition in gaming history, The Sony Playstaion (PSX).
Huh that's funny, because I only use my PS3 to lay PS1 games, majority of the exclusives I have no interest in and a lot of multiplat games are complete rubbish.
