Poor Americans Are Gamers, Too

In case you didn’t know, there are poor gamers. Conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation has published a report on what it means to be poor in America today. According to the report, households living in poverty have many modern amenities including air conditioning, cable TV and video game consoles.

The report is meant to show that the standards of living for the poor are in many cases better than most would imagine, but is a minority of impoverished families owning some sort of video game console really unexpected? Technology prices are going down. An Xbox 360 can be picked up for around $US100 and consoles from the previous generation go for even less.

... videogames is one of the cheapest hobbies you can have, so obviously poor people will rather invest in a gameconsole and some games, instead of spending that money on 1 hour bowling, or going to the movietheatre, or whatever.

I grew up in a relatively poor household, where we never took vacations, we didn't go out for dinner, and I didn't fly until I was about 23 years old or something, but videogames were part of my youth. Especially machines like the C64 and Amiga, which made it possible for me as a poor kid to still play lots of games 'for free' back then, which has turned me into the paying gamer I am today...

My defintion of poor, is sleeping under a bridge or not having running water. I would consider the people, they are describing, as low-income.

Pozzle2550d ago

I think they're pretty much referring to everyone under the 'poverty line'.

Not surprising, tbh. I know that when I was unemployed and living off crappy government payments, I spent a lot of time watching movies and playing video games. Not only because it was cheap in the long run (spending $60 on a game that will last months ain't too bad), but also because it offered hours of entertainment to help pass the time because I wasn't working.

Poor people can't have the finer things in life like rich people can. And so, being that video Games are relatively cheap/priced responsibly poor people will most likely get it in order to have something to do in their own home. Another reason, is poor people tend to have lots of kids; and one of the only means most parents have to protecting their kids away from the streets/gang violence; is to let them play video games.

"I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead!
Long live the king!"
