PlayStation Plus Get's a $40 1 Year Subscription - Is it Worth it Now?

TQ Author writes: I have to admit, that after the PSN outage and the free month of PS+, the service definitely grew on me. PlayStation Plus may not have all the bells and whistles, but it sure offers some great deals and games to keep you coming back for more. Now that my PS+ subscription has ended, I sort of miss the cool deals. Well, after several months of considering the upgraded and avoiding the $49.99 a year payment, I have decided to take advantage of the $40 PSN Plus subscription deal that has recently been unleashed.

It was always worth it. Look at the 3 articles that are related to this below.

WildArmed4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

This.
IGN's PS+ article ended up w/ a huge money back margain. Again, if you wanna just get games you are going to 'like'. Then obviously this isn't the service for you. Thou most of the games I've gotten for PS+ were down right awesome.
Plus, the discounts really hit the sweet spot.

@below

Obviously paying for the same price is such a better deal :D

Best4661d ago

They would have to pay me to use it. Basically they reduce the price for games that are downloadable therefore cost Sony nothing but the server to upload the game. Scam IMO. SCAM!

Drekken4661d ago

Best a scam is having to pay to play online with your friends. I the sheer amount of giveaways and discounts you get pays for the 12 month service in 1-3 months. Your comment is uninformed and borderline trolling.

darthv724661d ago

There is more to being a member of something simply because of no choice in the matter (think online play on 360 or playing WoW).

There is a feeling of difference between those who are and those who arent. You are wanting that membership to make you stand out and benefit from the fees that others have the choice of joining but obviously dont.

It isnt like Plus is a limited type of membership (like a health spa) where they only take people that meet certain criteria. However, the more that join Plus the more there will be a demand for another level to give that preception.

I could see sony having "members only" spaces in home or maps in kz3 or tracks for gt5 that you cant get any other way. Giving that person the feeling of actually being a member of a high quality club.

For now it is more of a costco than anything else. But time will progress and new things will come out for the plus side more so than the overall psn experience that anyone can enjoy because its free.

We know sony is studying MS and how they continue to succeed with the gold service. We know the core benefit of gold is online play but MS is adding perks to being a gold member. We can voice that the netflix and hulu and facebook stuff can all be done on the pc or ps3 for free. That is fine for those platforms. 360 is not that way nor should it be the same as other services.

Where lots of people are wanting live to be changed to be more like psn what they dont see is psn is changing to be more like live. Plus is just the first step and it will continue to evolve seeing as sony knows there are those who would pay.

Biggest4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

Best thinks that games make themselves and then ask for Sony's permission to materialize on the PSN. I think his God scammed him in the brain department.

Edit: darthv72, what are you trying to say? It seems as if you're using this as a chance to make Live seem fine as it is because the price makes it different from other platforms. Is that what this statement means?
"We know sony is studying MS and how they continue to succeed with the gold service. We know the core benefit of gold is online play but MS is adding perks to being a gold member. thorstein4661d ago

Well, Limbo is only 11.99 for Plus members...sweet! And free games! Win.

LOGICWINS4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

"And free games!"

Thorstein, don't you mean free rentals? Your not getting them for free. You need to resub if you want to keep these games. Theres a difference between paying a subscription fee to play a game and owning a game you paid nothing for.

darthv724661d ago

I guess what people miss is why sony had their service free to begin with. MS always had a paid service from the beginning so there was nothing to hide. When they introduced the silver level it was essentially the same as gold without online play. They knew not everyone plays online but that $$$ can be made from having a component of live available to anyone and everyone.

Sony couldnt start off charging for their service for one simple reason. Lack of structure. PSN didnt have what it has now so to get people to pay for it for what it was was just not what sony had in mind. To them it is easier to lay the ground work of the service and then slowly start taking away features from the free side and adding them (or outright making them only for) the paid members.

Think to when the cloud storage came about. There were many who voiced their concerns for why it wasnt for the free members. There has to be something to justify the difference between levels so this is one example. Like I said, before that (as well as new stuff coming out) the PLUS was more of a discount service. And yes the free games come with a fine print. Free for the extent of your membership.

If you are saying that I am saying it is ok to pay for live. Yes...it is. Just like it is ok to pay for Plus so long as what you pay for is substantial enough to justify the membership. The disagrees can keep on coming but the truth of the matter is that once you pay you can no longer differentiate yourself from those who dont. You may claim you can play online for free but the only ones who can really say that are those who arent paid members of Plus.

Once you pay you are now part of the club of "pay to play" which you can look at that in any way you like. Be it pay to play online competition or pay to play for free games each month. Sony knows $$$ can be made in online content and memberships. Why else do you think they are putting more effort into the Plus service and less into the basic free side?

It would not surprise me if sony actually did create limits for the free people just to urge them to join the club. Then once everyone is a member, they do it again to make an even better tier of the service. I welcome that day when there is something worth paying for the Plus service for that I just cant get any other way.

MrBeatdown4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

@LOGICWINS

Thanks. It just wouldn't be a PS+ discussion without someone harping on that tired argument.

The bottom line is this. If you subscribe and find the games aren't worth it to you, you won't renew, and you won't miss those games you didn't care for.

If you like the games, you'll resubscribe.

It really doesn't make sense why people need to constantly bring up the re-subscription issue when it doesn't really apply to that many people, if any. Honestly, who would stop subscribing if they liked what they were getting? Even if a person only found a game or two they liked but didn't feel it was worth it, they have more than enough time to get their fill. But hell, there's very few PSN/XBLA games I like, yet I can still easily say I've gotten my money's worth.

Funny thing too... it's always the people without subscriptions that bring it up. I can't say I've seen one person with a subscription complaining that they will lose their games.

---

And in response to one of your questions below...

"Exactly..which is why its not for me. Why would I spend money on something that doesn't fully cater to me?"

Because the value of what you get far exceeds what you pay for. Sony offers several hundred dollars worth of content per year, making it pretty easy to find $50 worth that make it worth it. Pretty simple logic, that.

"Again, if you wanna just get games you are going to 'like'. Then obviously this isn't the service for you."

Ummm..don't most people want things that they ACTUALLY like???

WildArmed4661d ago

Yes, but big surprise. Different People like different games.

Don't expect all the games to be CoD-type shooters, because believe it or not some people don't like 'em.
It's a blind roll, you win some, you lose some. But still it's easy to get your money's worth.

Sony isn't trying to cater to just you, contrary to common belief.

LOGICWINS4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

"Yes, but big surprise. Different People like different games."

Why would that be surprising to me?

"Don't expect all the games to be CoD-type shooters, because believe it or not some people don't like 'em."

LOL..why would you assume that I would expect the games PS Plus offers to be "COD-type shooters"? Hmm..someones making a lot of assumptions today.

"Sony isn't trying to cater to just you, contrary to common belief."

Exactly..which is why its not for me. Why would I spend money on something that doesn't fully cater to me?

"It's a blind roll, you win some, you lose some. But still it's easy to get your money's worth."

Lets say that game prices went up from $60 to $75...but you got one free random downloadable game along with the retail game you bought.

Applying your logic to this situation, it wouldn't matter whether I liked the downloadable game or not as long as I gt my money's worth. Sounds pretty stupid to me since I'm paying for something I might not like.

^^Thats what PSN Plus is..a gamble. You admitted it urself.

Urrakia344661d ago

What the hell is the big deal? If you don't like Playstation Plus then just don't buy it man. I personally think it's a great service that offers very good deals. For example, Plus members can get Borderlands with all DLC for $14.99. Go ahead and tell me that's not a ridiculous deal.

LOGICWINS4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

"What the hell is the big deal? If you don't like Playstation Plus then just don't buy it man"

There isn't a big deal. I was just having whats called an "argument". Just because PS Plus isn't for me doesn't mean I'm not allowed to give my opinion on it.

Negative opinions don't exist in your world?

"I understand it's your opinion but a few of your reasons just really don't make any sense."

Such as? I'd be happy to explain further.

Urrakia344661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

I understand it's your opinion but a few of your reasons just really don't make any sense.

EDIT: Such as your example of games going up in price and getting a free downloadable mini game. That's inaccurate because with Plus you get much more than just one game. It's not like you're subscribing just to get ONE game.

You also claim it's not for you because it doesn't fully cater to you? That is unreasonable. No service or game will ever FULLY cater to you. There will always be something you don't like and irks you so saying it doesn't completely cater to you is nonsense.

LOGICWINS4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

"That's inaccurate because with Plus you get much more than just one game. It's not like you're subscribing just to get ONE game."

That wasn't a literal correlation to PS Plus. It was to show that its better to spend money on something that you KNOW you will enjoy..as opposed to something that you may or may not enjoy.

For example, I KNOW that unless I'm dead/kidnapped/robbed/imprison ed, I will be enjoying Uncharted 3 this fall because I loved the beta so much that UC3 could be half the game the beta was and I would still buy it.

I won't be buying PS Plus because I don't know beforehead what I will be getting for free in the next 12 months after I hypothetically subscribe to the service. Hence, I can't guarantee that I will enjoy my PS Plus subscription.

"No service or game will ever FULLY cater to you."

I had a Strawberry Banana milkshake yesterday and I enjoyed every bit of it. I thought the price was reasonable too.

Also, PSN FULLY caters to me because the only expectation I have of it is that it lets me play online with friends and others. I have low expectations for it because its a free service. Home and the Internet Browser are nice bonuses.

A resounding "yes" from me.

jdfoster004661d ago

From what I have read from IGN. Yes, yes it is. Indeeed!

Ser4661d ago

I've already bought another year, $40 is too good of a deal to pass up. PS+ has saved me quite a bit of money since I bought it on launch. The discounts, free stuff, and early beta access practically pay for the subscription fee.

firemassacre4661d ago (Edited 4661d ago )

i have it, i saved around 100 bucks the first week. its worth it. better to get free things than paying and getting nothing.

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5069d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905069d ago (Edited 5069d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5069d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Jack-Pyro5069d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495069d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5069d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5069d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
