Pachter's Podium: Wii U 'Sweet Spot' at $249, Over $399 Would Be a 'Surprise'

In this month's edition of our ongoing Q&A column with Wedbush Securities Michael Pachter, IndustryGamers picks the analyst's brain about the potential Wii U pricing, what this holiday's top-sellers will be, if a company like Amazon could dethrone the mighty Zynga in the social space and more.

I'd be shocked if Wii U came out at $399 but I wouldn't be shocked at all if it ended up being $299.

EYEamNUMBER12336d ago (Edited 2336d ago )

at minimum 299 at max 349 nothing more nothing less
expecting it to be 250 is insane

299 seems very likely and i have no problem whatsoever with that price

EVILDEAD3602336d ago

For what WiiU is offering, I can't see it being released for anything under $299.

Sweet spot or not, Nintendo is not trying to price itself out of business. That thing is going to sell through the roof.

Believe me and mark my words..bu next year we all will be craving that thing. I know I LOVE hardware launches and that is one I won't miss. $299 and I'm in..but if the heavens opened and it launched for $249..the earth would implode..similiar to Wii, you would NEVER be able to keep it on the shelves for the first 6 months.

^^Anything over $250 and they've lost the casual crowd.

donniebaseball2336d ago

Yeah that's the challenge Nintendo is facing. They want the core back, but if they price too high they'll lose a lot of the casuals they got with the Wii

EYEamNUMBER12336d ago (Edited 2336d ago )

i really doubt that
the so called casual crowd went out and bought 360's plus 150 accessory in droves

LOGICWINS2336d ago (Edited 2336d ago )

If the PS3 drops to $200 this year..which I believe it WILL, then the 360 will follow suit.

Nintendo's gunna have a tough time pricing the Wii U if it truly wants the hardcore crowd.

IMO, the Wii U needs to be $250 just to survive. To be successful, its NEEDS to launch at $200.

"i really doubt that
the so called casual crowd went out and bought 360's plus 150 accessory in droves"

The 360 was the first next-gen console on the market. At the time, the casual crowd didn't know any better. However, now they are wising up and realizing that there are better options out there that give them more bang for their buck like the PS3.

Blu-Ray, free online, Internet Browser, etc.

The PS3 is currently outpacing the 360 in worldwide sales. This ALONE is proof that casuals are getting smarter with their money.

Heck...look at the underwhelming sales of the 3DS. The DS is the best selling console of all time...and consumers don't seem to care about getting a 3D version. The gaming public has caught on to Nintendo's tricks.

EYEamNUMBER12336d ago (Edited 2336d ago )

again i doubt that the FACT that the so called casuals went out and bought ass loads of kinects priced at 300-400 for the bundles and 150 for the accessory alone with no games to even play and are still buying em up

means a wii u priced at 299 isn't going to be a deal breaker

as for the ps3/360 at most a price cut will be to 250
when was the last time anyone dropped their price a full 100 dollars when a system isn't flopping

Zynga2336d ago (Edited 2336d ago )

"If the PS3 drops to $200 this year..which I believe it WILL, then the 360 will follow suit."

Not happening and the 360 is already at $200.

"as for the ps3/360 at most a price cut will be to 250. when was the last time anyone dropped their price a full 100 dollars when a system isn't flopping."

This is true and most likely happen.

The original Wii was cheap at launch, it's most likely that the Wii U will continue that trend if Nintendo wants to keep dominating the casual game market.

longcat2336d ago

yep, and this time they actually have some competition for the casuals (MS and Kinect)

allyc4t2336d ago

That is true. The one difference with the Wii U is that it's now geared towards core players as well. So whatever Nintendo loses in casual gamers, they could easily make up with the core crowd.

kneon2336d ago

They won't be gaining back much of the core unless they have an online system comparable to Live and PSN, oh and some games that people actually want to play.

cochise3132336d ago (Edited 2336d ago )

i don't see the casual crowd flocking to this like they did the wii; it doesn't seem as simple as wii. And I doubt this is going to be under $300 becuase of the controller alone. Look how much the 3ds costs; there is no way the wii u will be under 250.

Rrobba2336d ago

My bet is on $299, possibly $350.

I'm fine with that price, too.

avenger.avrs2336d ago

I hope it is $299. That would really make me happy.
