The huge increase in Xbox 360 console sales for the June NPD results could be related to a promotion that Microsoft has been offering.
written blog about sony handing out free playstation 3 with tv
@ units But isn't this the same site that you used to post the Xbox360 and Wii hardware figures? Edit: My bad, didn't know the counted free giveways. I thought they only counted consoles sold.
Well that makes a lot more sense. 500,000 units out of nowhere like that was kind of baffling lol. Microsoft handing out consoles to pad the numbers? This is the same as Wii Sports numbers tbh. as fun as Wii Sports could be, no way would it have sold nearly 80,000,000 without being given away.
The free Xbox 360 with a 699.99 Windows computer....NO SHIT! People buy more computers than they do with TVs, computers break more often than TVs.
It was genius whatever they did.
The article stated that "the promotion certainly had at least a small impact"... I would say more small then anything. But would this be any different then the Sony promotions giving away free PS3s with their TVs? Both Sony and MS do promotional shuffling to get their systems out there and both count all numbers of units released in these deals. Nothing new...
Wow, so now Microsoft is giving away free consoles? I knew those numbers didn't magically appear for no reason.
Umm.. Sony does the same thing.
NPD doesn't count promotions. They don't even count all retailers. Stop buying into bullshit!
Oh well, however they can get them out there. Don't see what all the fuss is about.
For whatever reason it just kills some people to see the 360 continuing to dominate. After all most of the media and PS3 fans said the Xbox 360 would be finished as soon as MGS4 was released, well, we see how that turned out. PS3 sales are shrinking almost every other month, and 360 continues to hold steady after, how many years has it been now?
dominating? 360 had a 8 million head start and since the ps3 released its down to 2.5-3.0 million gap. Hate to burst your bubble but there is a big vast world outside of america
actually it is back to 5 million 360 over PS3 from both reports from the companies so catch up home boy. They are about to have another report coming out soon.
Not even.... the gap is 3m just look @ the shippment numbers so no 5m GAP is just from xbox wet dream land.
You have a good point on one aspect. there is a vast world outside of America. But for Americas consumers they could care less as long as they are getting what they want. If Europe, Japan, Australia, Kazakhstan or any other country is not behind the Xbox 360 then it doesn't effect them as America is large enough that it will not go unnoticed by the developers regardless. So the fact that Xbox 360 does not sell as well in Japan has no care in the world for the average gamer in the Americas.
infamousXX87XX, so you're telling me that Sony that has sold 150 million PS2s out there+god knows how many PS1s they sold+PSP... Sony, which overtook Nintendo as being the household name for gaming systems, is taking 6yrs to catch a company whose 1st console went down in flames with 25mil sold... So is the 1yr really that big of a deal?
Where were you when the ps2 had a head start on the Xbox?
@red How can the gap increase when you're not outselling ps3 worldwide week by week? Wake up
it is amazing that they managed to sell 500k in a slow month without any major releases. no matter how you slice it, they made a good job this month
huh? They didn't sell 500k, a lot were given away in promotions for free.
That's speculation. *EDIT* The giveaways being used in the count are speculation
@element They were giving free 360s away with everyone who bought a windows 7 PC. That's a fact, not speculation.
Why is he getting disagrees, they really were giving away free Xbox360s. The thing is I didn't think you could count those giveaways in the NPD with the consoles that were sold. Sony should start giving away consoles as well then. Source: http://www.joystiq.com/2011... Edit: I bet i'll get disagrees even with a source.
No MS didn't have or make anyone buy a PC. Consumers CHOSE to purchase a computer that had a promotion go with it. I find it funny people are all of a sudden saying oh because of promotions is why it sold as high as it did. Here is some info for you. The 360 actually sold just as much last year when the 360 slim was introduced in the month of June when E3 happened. The momentum had started from their and it continued with Kinect. It is almost a year and the 360 has outsold both the PS3 and Wii and the best people can do is simply speculate because of a promotion? Doesn't that tell you how POPULAR the product is when someone buys another product to get it? What about when Sony was giving away PS3's with their Bravia displays. Even then the 360 was STILL outselling it.
so where do you come with "a lot"?
@ redDevil87 No, the speculation is that the 500K is including the free 360's. That is speculation until proof is given. I don't see what the issue is though. Sony have been giving away free PS3 if you sign on with Rogers for a shared smart phone plan. http://mobilesyrup.com/2011...
Ain't shit free red. Someone paid somewhere.
of course because of all those gift cards and laptops that came with xbox for free
Tell me you guys do know they raise the prices of the laptops more then there already worth to off set most of the xbox price.
so wats the problem? I mean dont they give away free consoles with mobile phone contracts?...
Well its obvious why wii was last b/c everyone is going to wait for the wii-u now.
Wow just when you didn't hear enough ridiculous reasons...
lol really? why didnt i see articles like this when sony was given away ps3 for buying their hd tv? laptops? blu ray movies? http://www.studentbuyinggui... http://gizmodo.com/338763/s... http://www.cheapassgamer.co... edit: and has anyone even looked into the pc's? 699.99$ for a pc you could get for 200$
How were they giving away? Explain.
Guys i dont think npd track bundles, maybe people thought microsft e3 press conference was good, but the top 10 didn't have a single kinect game so idk, it's really a big mystery how 360 jump up so high.
No it isn't. By the way Kinect can be used for more than just games. Just FYI.
But you wouldnt just buy a 360 for kinect you just buy the kinect you dont need a 360 to use the kinect.
What the hell are you talking about? Consumers that want Kinect most likey don't have a 360. Your assuming. Once again, If customers want to use the voice intergration regardless of mine or your opinion about how expensive it is to buy a 360 AND Kinect just for those features so what. It is their choice. It isn't just one thing that is making the 360 numbers as high as they are. The brand recognition the Slim that has not lost momentume since one year ago this month that also had a 500,000 month and the Kinect and guess what, third fracking party games that simply makes the 360 the system of choice is why the numbers go high. Oh yeah also the "casuals" that seems to be purchasing a system with Kinect. All in the sixth year of the console.
@ nightmarex121 "you dont need a 360 to use the kinect." Say what? MS have yet to have Kinect/PC support so what are you talking about when you say "you dont need a 360 to use the kinect."? How are you going to use Kinect if you don't have a 360? Of course you need a 360 to use a Kinect. Maybe I misunderstood your comment...
I think he just didn't know how to explain it correctly. He probably was talking about the fact that you can buy a kinect seperately. As appose to the bundle... As for the rest of his statement I'll point out that my friend recently bought a 360/kinect bundle solely for the kinect.
2009 - 240K 2010 - 450K 2011 - 507K Wow, quite an impressive jump. Congrats to MS! Cheers! :D
we don't have to come up with a reason. that's very fanboy'ish. Its good for them just as it would be if it were sony. More consoles means more games :)
Ms going great guns another price drop soon will boost even more sales, they could afford to make 2 dollars profit each console sold, sell them dirt cheap after they announce next console.
wait werent these free xboxes...does that mean Microsoft technically looses money on their promotion in the short term...anyway yeah its obvious thats why the figures were 500k without it i would say it would be 300k
but its not... and NPD is reporting 507,000... that is the number. Lets all get over this and move on. MS made a very smart decision and promotion.
A few things to consider: - You need a valid student ID for this offer - It started in May, these are June numbers. - It started with $699 Laptops - Only retail stores that had this offer was Bestbuy and MS stores - Only online stores: HP.com, Dell.com and Microsoft.com - Sony runs the same kind of promotion with TVs I think Xbox 360 sold extremly well even without this offer.
But are the free ps3's counted in the npd?
lol but really still?..ps3 fail to catch xbox and wii....is a fantastic console (that i got) but if u put sales of xbox hardware,software..and u add...the BIG price of a peripheral that cost half of a ps3..and sold 11 or more millions unit by now... i mean xbox 360 4giga http://cgi.ebay.it/IPT-8VS-... the kinect http://cgi.ebay.it/KINECT-G... is incredible
I'm starting to get confused on all this sales chart. Who is really out-selling who globally? Xbox fans says 360 dominates but PS3 fans says otherwise. All I know NA is dominated by the 360 and Japan by the PS3 but everything in between from EU to Asia seems to be mixed information depending who's fan is saying it. ><
I'm confused aswell, Here in Europe, both consoles sell well. But from what i read (I READ IT FROM ARTICLES)the PS3 sells more in EU? And the Xbox more in the US? And now the salesnumbers? So...Those numbers are false because MS gave away free consoles??>>>i'm confused..
How are the numbers false? 507,000 XBOX 360's were sold in June. Wether it be from the laptop deal, a buy one get a $50 gift card or just bought the console out right... They sold over the counter 507,000 units. For those quabbling over the laptop deal...at the register the 360 actually rings up with a price of $150 and an instant rebate of $50 from what understand and the laptop gets $100 off at ring up as well.
lol... I love this. Journalist / Fanboy reaction: "The reason for sales boost on 360 is probably due to promotion of 360 give away for laptop purchase!!!!" Microsofts response: "And your point, we still sold 507,000 units?" MS absolutely brilliant move... For each of those "free" give aways they put 2 MS capable devices into a home on one purchase. Sony should think to include a PS3 with their over priced Vaios.
