Video games review scandal: Metacritic uncovers, drops crooked publication

Metacritic has told CVG that it has been forced to remove a games publication from its review listings after uncovering "corrupt practices".

Since the incident, the market-leading aggregation site has continued to police the games media via a strict set of guidelines - partly due its belief that some reviewers can "absolutely be bought". (Industry, Metacritic)

Beat me to it :)

I've always wondered why IGN has a spot on the 360 dashboard

This is no scandal because for it to be a scandal these sites would have to hire journalist which as far as I can tell none of them do. Journalist are trained in their trade. These sites hire C.I.S. and English majors who have no journalistic integrity. They are community managers not reporters.

Lol so true. Don't forget the biggest gaming innovation in 2009 was MW2 death perks! IGN is such BS, not to mention the apparent 10/10 in graphics IGN gave MW2.
rob6021  +   1512d ago
Well now IGN has a Microsoft PR person writing reviews (child of Eden), they've completely thrown their integrity out the window if they had some before.

I like Gamespot too but they did have the cain and lynch incident were it was undeniable that they succumbed to bribery...

Besides, they score harshly more often than not.

His proof of IGN rating PS3 exclusives higher is bogus. It's only based on 15 cherry picked games, if you throw everything into the mix they're about even, even slightly pro 360.

Check this out; much more in depth. The math doesn't lie, you can even check it if you like.

Are they planning on naming sites? Or is someone clever enough to find out who is missing now?

Where there is journalism, there will be ethical dilemmas and those who stand on both sides of them.

Fuel for the fanboys' fire...
miDnIghtEr  +   1513d ago
Could you imagine if N4G people were allowed to review games?!?!?!? Jesus... PS3 games would average at about a 98, Wii games around a 75 and 360 games at a 62.
MrSpace  +   1513d ago
If this was 2006-2008 ish then it would be the other way around

You know when this used to be a pro 360 website
Why o why  +   1513d ago
yeah, when it used to be all about exclusives and graphical prowess ;)

EDGE all the way but then again MS dont even need to buy them....they're already MS's bonafide hoe

I hear alot of people saying that and you know what it's BS. I was here back in 06-07 (your account doesnt even date back to then) and I can safely say things were pretty balanced back then fanboy wise.
Xbox and ps fanboys both gave as good as they got, nowadays most xbox fanboys have gone.

Not that I really care, I call out idiots and bs'ers no matter their affiliation.

In all honesty, there isn't a single reviewing site that can be trusted. Not one. They all take bribes or just being bias.
TheBeast  +   1513d ago
Say what? Now you just can't outsource every single review site known to man.

Some sites still have the pride for the gaming industry.

also watch Classic Game Room reviews. No scores, just simple honest reviews
RoyaleWC  +   1512d ago
He's my favourite too. I'm a big fan of the 'no game score' reviews. When there's a score too many people just skip to that and then complain about how game x got 1 more point than game y. Without a score, it directs attention back to the actual review.

Shocking? Not at all...just disappointing to hear our long held suspicions being affirmed.

old but it still holds up even up to this day.

c'mon crackdown 2 an 8...really

same map, pretty much nothing new...It was an expansion according to those who i know have played it so edges harsh review standards were forgotten

Same with their bias towards games made by english devs....All on or above average just like any of the 360 exclusives. Never as harsh with those for some reason ¬_¬

Is this how Gears 2 MP received so much praise from IGN and Edge when it didn't even work properly until a year after the game was released.
ipe  +   1513d ago
lmao so true. It d take 10 mins. to find match and when u find it it was unplayable, lag, glitches and what not.

But hey its gears
Venjense  +   1505d ago
True, just played the SP again...really its the one of the best 3PS. MP is still messed actually, I just tried and it still takes forever to find a match...maybe it's faster for DLC owners??

Never deserved 9+/10 at release due to completely broken MP though.

"MetaCritic's team annually evaluates whose reviews it adopts - a process it takes very seriously: "It [comes down] to a number of things: It's the quality of the analysis, the quality of the writing; do they have an audience; are they respected in the gaming community... is there a reputation for scoring integrity?"

LMAO Metajoke should just remove themselves entirely such a joke site to begin with.
Louis_Guzman  +   1513d ago
Nothing of importance will be lost. Now how about deep sixing Sterling's Destructoid "reviews" as well.
Dragonfodder  +   1513d ago
Seriously... I recently read the review he did for Assassin's Creed 2 when it came out and he simply trashed the game. He just nit-picked about every little unimportant detail that he thought was annoying and only a small portion of his review was dedicated to what makes the game so great. He must have been beat-up a lot as a kid... :)
8bit_Nes_Rambo  +   1513d ago
Yes, he was rough on Assassin's Creed 2. The breaking point for me was his Vanquish review. He blatantly got aspects of the gameplay wrong. (ex. After missing on a melee attack he said the suit would overheat. On the contrary, if the player missed with a melee strike, there was no overheat penalty.)ect, ect.
kevnb  +   1513d ago
reviews are a joke since everything truly hit mainstream.
Silly gameAr  +   1513d ago
Hope it's not the last. They really need to crack down on some publications. It's so obvious when an awesome game comes out and they don't receive the scores they deserve, meanwhile others get scores that are suspect to say the least.

In fact, just scrap meta period.

By the way, I'm going to guess (hope?) Eurogamer. Those guys should just stop doing anything gaming related.

Naw, while Eurogamer is rigid (and they definately bungled the RE4 wii review) they are pretty good overall. Sterling at Destructoid, Xplay, Ign, these are the ones I would be concerned about. CVG is no longer a factor, thankfully.

the best review site is yourself simple as...most people bar some do this as a business and so its inevitable that they have preferences and bias.
ZeroChaos  +   1512d ago
IMO he should name them. Might be nice to see the companies improve themselves or just die.
rob6021  +   1512d ago
As long as Edge is still there they've failed to remove the worst offender. That site fails the "is there a reputation for scoring integrity" test.
