June 2011 Sales Estimates Place Next-Generation Pressure on Sony and Microsoft

Rumors of the next generation of consoles have been rampant over the past 12 months, and the major, albeit predictable, announcement of the Wii U at E3 last month has put the gossip into hyperdrive. While many defend the assertion that the PlayStation 3 is completely capable of staying competitive in the technological arena, a huge feat when you consider it came out in 2006, falling sales could spur quicker development of next-generation consoles if the numbers aren’t up to expectations.

It is summer...sales are never good. It is always like that.

frankymv4669d ago

Its more than that.

Current consoles are ancient and many are waiting for the next gen to arrive.

2012

lazertroy4669d ago (Edited 4669d ago )

Video games are dying. Sales will continue to drop regardless of a new generation.

DragonKnight4669d ago

@frankymv: you need to brush up on your console history there. no one cares about the PC standard, and the PS3 and Wii have only been out for 5 years. they aren't ancient by console standards. you want PC tech so bad, game on a PC. just sayin'.

@lazertroy: "Video games are dying. Sales will continue to drop regardless of a new generation."

Ooohhh, one bubble troll. I was about to actually respond to you by stating the fact that the video game industry continues to show record growth and was one of the only industries during the worst part of the global recession to actually do so, but you're just a troll. Ok. Sorry, I nearly took what you said to be an actually serious comment.

Pintheshadows4669d ago (Edited 4669d ago )

If this is true please explain the PS2?

Dragonknight, you fight the good fight but they won't listen and even if they did they wouldn't be able to come up with a counter argument. Summer is always quiet games wise. It has been forever.

gamingdroid4669d ago

Five years is ancient by console time, considering a new cycle should have started by now. In computer time it is even older.

That said, when you are on the market for that long the amount of cheap available software is flooding the market. A decline is inevitable, especially a lackluster summer as this.

DragonKnight4669d ago

@gamingdroid: I believe the post above yours explains it best. Explain the PS2. God of War 2 came out well passed the 5th year and was amazing for a console game. 5 years is not when a new cycle should start, and besides who decides that kind of thing? The current consoles are not at all ancient by console standards, and PC standards are completely irrelevant. No matter how much the PC elitist fanboys want it to happen, PC's will never overtake consoles as a primary source of video game entertainment (unless companies decide to stop making consoles), so mentioning them in the same area as consoles is just a way to start unending "my PC is better than your console, thus I am a better person" argument.

frankymv4669d ago

@Dragon.

I wasn't referring to the PC. I hate the PC.

Let me say it again...CONSOLE TECH IS ANCIENT.

@ lazertroy. Yeah that's what they said several years ago too and video games are still here.

consolez_FTW4669d ago (Edited 4669d ago )

@ lazertroy
Wait wha... you think Videogames are not dying, it's just summer. Every Summer there is a serious drought of new AAA titles. Thats why us gamer use summer to catch up on our backlog. So gaming is NOT dying, I wonder what sales charts you are using??

Ser4669d ago (Edited 4669d ago )

Lol, so much gaming drought propaganda.

I can't wait to see the November sales charts. We'll see how much "pressure" the gaming companies are receiving then. If anything, the pressure will be there due to the mass amount of money being shoved in their faces.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron - Coming Back for a New Generation

Originally launched in 2011, El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is coming to Nintendo Switch, so It's time to look back at the original.

Still have my ps3 copies. Bought it at launch and another one when I found it cheap and in perfect condition about 10 years ago. I wouldn’t buy it on Switch but if they made a PS5 version I would. I still have one of my PS3 Fats hooked up so good to go either way.

darthv7213h ago

Id play it again on the switch. I wished my 360 version was bc but this is still a good way to play.

Fallout 3's Reveal Led To Death Threats And Bethesda's First Security Guard

The artist behind Fallout 4’s Deathclaw reveals just how bad things got back when Bethesda took over the series

anast15h ago

People are stupid I get it. No one should feel unsafe,

But I think they need to talk about why they cut so many corners during the development process and why none of their games ever look current. And why they think all of this is okay while they charge full price.

LucasRuinedChildhood14h ago

As much as Bethesda deserve criticism, that's not really relevant to the reveal of Fallout 3 in 2007.

VenomUK11h ago

The default angle Kotaku always go for is to highlight the worst in gaming.

I would’ve focused on the creative.

gold_drake10h ago

there is no "but". the hell lol
you dont send death threats, period.
