id Software design director Matt Hooper says it’s best to develop new technology and new IP simultaneously, as it allows you to build your engine around the game, rather than the other way around.
Building new IP in a new engine is “an advantage” Dice comes to mind..
no not really
Console Port comes to mind as with most "AAAAAAAAAAAAA can you speak up i can't hear what your saying GAMES" Still looks ScweeT =D
“I’d be lying if I said it’s been easy to develop the technology alongside the game, but it is kind of an advantage because you get to make these subtle little differences,” Sounds more like a disadvantage to me. A new engine is an unknown quantity, technical problems, delays in features or numerous other problems with the engine can severely cripple game development. I would say that is a huge negative and a pre-built engine can be tweaked, so I really don't see how a "new" engine has advantage over an existing one, except it might better built. However, we see how far Epic has taken their Unreal Engine and what others have done to it. Anything you can do to remove unknowns and allow developers to focus on creating content is an advantage, anything not aiding this, is most likely in the way!
Not really , since you can at least tailor and build your engine for and around your game's concept . While at best you can "only" tweak , tinker with an old engine , or go to the trouble of almost entirely rewriting it . An existing engine can as much restrain your creativity as helping it , making you workaround flaws and impossibilities instead of allowing a free and constant flow . The biggest and real upsides of using an existing engine are mostly of economical nature
Funny, before clicking the link I had surmised the exact same ethos, down to the phrasing, as to why it's an advantage. Clearly, then, I am as intelligent as John Carmack. KNEEL BEFORE ME. EDIT: Matt Hooper said this, here's to not even reading the summary properly :p
Matt Hooper= Captain Obvious. Lets release a new IP 2011! We'll based it off the Doom 3 engine! Hmmm...
Borderlands 2 needs to look something like this game
Too bad COD didn't use this engine, it could have been 720p for a change.
. I`ll judge the game when it launches but it better be near perfect with all the nonsense these guys talk about like we invented this and that...O_o...who cares!!! I don`t want to hear any more excuses, Dice have enough for everybody. I don`t know if any of the game play trailers are confirmed console game play or PC`s with console like settings. I`m waiting for the other shoe to drop because once Johnny C started complaining about how PC is more powerful than consoles, that told me the damage control was in effect.
