A brief look back at some of the best sequels ever to be released.
BioShock really? I mean sure it is a fantastic game and one of my all time favorites but there is no way in hell it is better than System Shock 2. If you played it you would understand why. System Shock games are one of the first games that blended FPS and RPG, and arguably no game after did it better except maybe Deus Ex.
Personally, I enjoyed BioShock way more than System Shock 2. The atmosphere and characters are what won me over in BioShock.
I doubt you've played system shock 2 then. It's atmosphere and voice acting was much better done and far more eerie. The only thing bioshock has going for it over system shock 2 is the graphics and that's only because its a newer game...
@Darkfocus You can doubt oxygen, Darkfocus, it doesn't mean that you're right. I have indeed played System Shock 2, (before BioShock, mind you) whether or not you choose to believe me is irrelevant to me. Also, BioShock's voice acting and atmosphere was far better than System Shock 2's in my opinion.
Absolutly no way is BioShock better than System Shock 2. System Shock 2 is the greatest game ever created and I cannot see it being surpassed ever.
"While I know BioShock isn’t a direct sequel to anything (and by god, did its own sequel suck), writer and designer Ken Levine likes to argue that it’s a “spiritual successor to SystemShock 2" See this is why I don't understand why they didn't make BioShock Infinite into it's own franchise and call it something like Areoshock/AirShock. You could call that a spiritual successor to Bioshock, if it's got nothing to do with Bioshock then why call it Bioshock....is it just for the sake of sales.
Bioshock is like Final Fantasy. It's a name in which each game in the series is set in a different period, with similiar traites that make it unique to the game. Bioshock 2 should of been called Sea of Dreams, and Infinite was supposed to be Bioshock 2. I wouldn't call Bioshock a sequel. Spiritual successor: yes, but sequel: no. _____ I don't agree with a lot of this. Nightfire wasn't good at all. Agent Under Fire was the only other worthy Bond game. Rayman 2 didn't compare to it's 2D masterpiece. Bioshock isn't the sequel to SystemShock 2. That's like trying to say that SotC surpassed ICO. There is no way in hell Oblivion was better than Morrowind. Oblivion was good, but it was completely repetative and lacked the originality that Morrowind had. One of the greatest WRPGS ever made if you ask anyone. I'll give you Silent Hill. SH2 was the best of the series.
I agree with everything you said, but I think Daggerfall was better than Morrowind. Both were better than Oblivion though.
I hope this is not saying Oblivion was better than Morrowind. My first question would be: did he play Morrowind?
Actually I agree with the claim that Oblivion was in fact superior to Morrowind. Did he say Morrowind was bad?
I enjoyed Oblivion more than Morrowind. Lock me up and throw away the key! Morrowind is an AMAZING game, don't get me wrong. I just prefer Oblivion is all.
Morrrowind > Oblivion
Oblivion is a great game but has a massive flaw where every object and enemy levels up with you. That is actually such a massive hole in the game that i'd consider it to be a bug that never got fixed. Morrowind did it right and I hope Skyrim fixes this.
Of couse he played Moronwind... you people always geting to insane conclusions...0_0
Haha! Finally. Thanks Astaroth - I completed Morrowind.
Worst trolling I've seen in months...
I don't know what's worse: A) Apparently the writer doesn't know what a sequel is. B) Not only is 007 Nightfire not a "sequel" to Goldeneye, it wasn't even the next Bond game to come after Goldeneye. 007 Agent Under First came out before it on the PS2, and there were PS1 James Bond games like Tomorrow Never Dies and the World is Not Enough. C) 3 sentences is not enough to explain why a sequel is better than the original.
agree 100% and would add, D) the writing itself is sh** btw the expression is 'well-rounded', not "fully rounded", MisterMarston
1st paragraph states no Mario or Zelda sequels because the originals are "iconic". this is immediately followed by the 1st actual entry that states its predecessor "set the bench mark" (which basically means it's 'iconic'). FAIL
This is a pretty shitty list.
No mention of assassin's creed 2 anywhere... really?
it could have taken the place of one of the 3 games that shouldn't have been on the list...
call me crazy but I preferred orig assassin's creed. really missed the the more abstract, electronic, high-pitched sounds associated with Viewpoints from the original. AC2 went for a more realistic approach that just made me notice the jarringly AWFUL dialogue even more. also, Flags > Feathers. the 1st has more charm. that made me more willing to forgive flaws that still exist in AC2...
Shitty fucking list. Bioshock better than System Shock 2!? NO WAY! Oblivion better than Daggerfall!? NO! 007 is arguable but this is a terrible list. Only thing I can agree with is Silent Hill 2.
Oblivion was the sequel to Morrowind, not Daggerfall. But yeah, it's so depressing to know that so many people will never have a chance to experience System Shock 2, because EA refuses to put it on Steam.
My personal list would be (in no ranking order): Portal 2 Assassins Creed 2 Mass Effect 2 God Of War 2 Uncharted 2 Silent Hill 2 Devil May Cry 3 Sly 2: Band Of Thieves Metal Gear Solid 3 Fallout 3
Nice list. I'd add Half Life 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Skate 2
hahahhahaah at oblivion even being compared to morrowind and daggerfall
Agreed! This author is an idiot.
Cannot believe Uncharted 2: Among Thieves isn't on there...
In my opinion, Portal 2 was better than Portal. I played Portal 2 first and bought Portal, I couldn't play it. Also Assassin's Creed 2 was way better than the first. Again, I played Assassin's Creed 2 first and went back and bought the first one and I couldn't even finish it. I know it's early, but I think it's safe to say that Skyrim will be better than Oblivion as well.
No Uncharted 2? No Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood? No Portal 2? No Red Dead Redemption? I don't like this list.....
Crash Bandicoot Ratchet & Clank Spyro All better games than Rayman
No chance the original Rayman was far better than the second.
No Uncharted 2, God of War 2 or even Halo 2?
Street Fighter Mega Man Assassins Creed
Half Life 2 Thief 2 Freespace 2 System Shock 2 Uncharted 2
here is my top 5 sequels. 1. Resident Evil 4 2. Uncharted 2 3. TES:Oblivion (only because it made things simple for the noobs) 4. Mortal Kombat 9 5. Mass Effect 2
