Microsoft's Durkin: Entertainment 'Driving Platform Momentum' On Xbox 360

Gamasutra: Dennis Durkin, COO of Microsoft's IEB, tells Gamasutra editor-at-large Chris Morris, "Not only has gaming usage gone up [on Xbox 360], but non-gaming has as well," as the company evolves the console into a do-it-all entertainment box.

Kinect is hardcore next gen!!

b163o12265d ago

Wrong....

Xbox banked heavily on Kinect, and we seen what they showed @E3...
Entertainment is driving the 360's momentum???? I guess cause it's not the exclusives.

AAACE52265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

WOW... I didn't see much about Kinect but your comment is pointless anyway!

Do people even talk about Move anymore?

It seems like all people here want to do is talk about MS stuff!

Anyway, I know they probably won't do this, but once the tv stuff comes out, they have a legitimate reason to charge for XBL! So in theory, they could pull something where they make the online gaming portion free for silver memberships!

But more than likely, they won't do it!

Edit: @ b163o1... Sony has had tons of exclusives for the past few years! Most are quickly forgotten no matter how good the fanboys say they are. A few stand in the spotlight for a while.

All those exclusives haven't allowed Sony to beat Nintendo or MS this gen. At best, they have Sony competing with MS for second place!

So what's the point of having all those exclusives when 1st place is so far away?

What is really being accomplished by dumping all that money into those games that barely make it to million sellers?

Playing sales game again are we, lol. Meanwhile everyone else is playing games.

"Some core gamers felt left out of the company's E3 press conference, as Microsoft focused on Kinect and non-gaming functions. Others were happy to see their game system continue its evolution into a full-fledged entertainment device."

That whole paragraph is wrong

"Some core gamers"

No...the Majority of core gamers

"felt left out of the company's E3 press conference, as Microsoft focused on Kinect and non-gaming functions."

This years conference AND last year's...it's like they havent learn't there lesson from 2010's E3 conference.

"Others were happy to see their game system continue its evolution into a full-fledged entertainment device."

Please tell me who would rather see it become an full fledged entertainment console instead of them focusing on their main audience and giving us some games.

Microsoft, for the past 2 Kinect focused E3's, have basicaly shown us a giant middle finger while they rake in the money from Kinect.

FlashXIII2265d ago

I think it'll end up a cautionary tale in the end. Microsoft will end up being like the ex gf who dumps you as she thinks she is getting something better but when reality kicks in, she comes crawling back.

I really don't see Kinect games selling that well. Microsoft's choice to focus on casuals first and gamers second will come back to haunt them. Simply put, the casual market is too unpredictable with their spending habits when it comes to games. If game sales don't meet expectations, developers will shy away from making Kinect games (look at Epic's announcement about their real thoughts on making a kinect game).

Simply put, Microsoft needs the core gamers backing and the past two E3s, core gamers have as been said, been given the middle finger. Which in turn many core gamers are giving them the middle finger back.

It'll be an interesting christmas either way.

PS: Give more AAA games dammit!

coolbeans2265d ago

"Please tell me who would rather see it become a full fledged entertainment console..."

Never does he state anyone would RATHER see that; he's only stating that others were pleased with the new additions announced to the entertainment aspect. I'm pretty sure that point isn't debatable since nothing about sacrificing hardcore games for more media options is mentioned.

Read that a bit more clearly instead going on a rampage b/c of Kinect.

kingdoms2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

--some core gamers--

This is true kinect has sold close to 15 million, since the sales gap is now 5 million and not 14 or 15 million the majority of core gamers are not as mad as ps3 fanboys try to make use out to be.

--felt left out of the company's E3 press conference, as Microsoft focused on Kinect and non-gaming functions.--

Microsoft does their E3's to sell consoles and AAA blockbusters, what few hardcore gamers and PS3 fanboys had built up in their heads is not relevant. All hardcore gamers are informed about what is coming regardless of E3 and they know there are already too many games that are actually competitive against each other which is more than I can say for Sony.

--Others were happy to see their game system continue its evolution into a full-fledged entertainment device.--

Not much to say about this the 360 sales so well because of XBL and the 360 being a entertainment hub hense the competition following suit.

Sounds more like moronic PS3 fanboy logic and pretendsous concerns based on rabid frustration due to PS3 lagging behind in the industry in so many ways.

Sony can pump out all the mediocre games that mostly flop all they want but if they don't deliver an overall better package and service PS4 will be worse off than PS3

MrSpace2265d ago

All I got from that comment is that you hate the PS3 and you think it's crap.

Which means your an 360 fanboy...

<Sigh>

"pretendsous concerns based on rabid frustration due to PS3 lagging behind in the industry in so many ways. "

lol

"Sony can pump out all the mediocre games that mostly flop all they want but if they don't deliver an overall better package and service PS4 will be worse off than PS3 "

Bigger LOL

cervantes992265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

If Microsoft is not careful, many of their core gamers may end up choosing PS4 instead of Xbox 720 next gen.

Just a thought as I have been sorely disappointed in my 360 the past 8-12 month. At least I get Gears 3 this year so my 360 won't go to complete waste.

I primarily game on my PS3 now, something I could not say two years ago.

DARK WITNESS2265d ago

Totally agree with you. There was a time if you had called me any sort of fanboy it would have been an xbox fanboy. Now, i look at it and just feel like throwing it out the window.

The more I think about MS E3 presentations and all these stupid statements they keep making, the more I feel they are just ignoring us and it's become more then evident that they don't care.

next gen I think it will be a PS4 only. MS can go jump off a cliff. If it was not for the third party games the thing would be dead and buried !

As for Kinect... I would love to Kinect my foot with somone's A$$ really hard !!

cervantes992265d ago

Well said about Kinect - I feel the same way.

Bubble up +

FlashXIII2265d ago

Couldn't agree more.. bought a ps3 back in Febuary and haven't looked back. If alls they have next gen is Halo, Gears, Forza and Fable I will have no problem not buying it after their treatment of the very people who got them where they currently are.

Optical_Matrix2265d ago

And not games. Oh how things have changed. It is a games console primarily so the focus should be games. The people who have supported you for so long did not bye a 360 to watch Sky or highlights on ESPN. We bought it for the games, with the entertainment features as mere extra's.

XRider2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

Are you saying the "Xbox 360" doesn't play games?

Optical_Matrix2265d ago

Nope. Not once did I say that. So this must mean, you can't read. I said that they're pushing entertainment which is NOT the primary function of the 360, nor the primary reason most people bought the damn machine in the first place. To me that says MS isn't confident enough in their software sector. Gamers want games. Not Kinect Disneyland and a new Dashboard every 5 minutes

Biggest2265d ago

That's the thing, Optical_Matrix. If you don't set the post beforehand they 360 fanboys have to set, and subsequently move, them for you. It used to be that the 360 was all about the games. Then it became all about the sales. Then it became all about the services. Then it became all about the multiplatform games. Then it became about the old games. Then it became about Kinect. Then it became about whatever it is XRider wants it to be about. Some people are happy with Microsoft's direction. XRider will forever be one of those people, no matter how many times that direction changes.

DiRtY2265d ago

With Kinect outselling the competition, which is very close to death, and the best variety of games coming this holiday season I see the Xbox keep on outselling the PS3 for the entire year.

The 600k in the past 3months was just a start.
