Heath of GR talks with the year 1998 about the general gaming landscape, concluding, "Oh, 1998. We've got a lot to talk about before you come visit me...."
Ah, back before 5-year development cycles, seeing "Squaresoft" on a box actually MEANT something, single-console co-op play, and no worries about firmware. Remember PSM's lid stickers? Those were rad. I had an Eidos one featuring Ninja + Tomb Raider on my console.
I miss those days. Lately I've been wishing I could find the time to play through FF7 again, been a lot of talk about FF that's been making me long for when Square made good RPGs. I had those stickers too BTW, I recall mine was the PSM symbol, a smiley face with an eye patch on it.
Ah, back when I was 6 and could have probably played a blank screen without noticing.
Thanks for making me feel old chap.
i was 11, and i just got my playstation
jeez, i was twenty years old.
I used to buy titles just because they had the SquareSoft logo. That's literally how I found Secret of Mana. After that, I bought pretty much ALL of their games. I stopped at FFXI and haven't purchased another other than FFXIII. But that was a regretful purchase.
I agree. After the merger to form Square enix, they started to slowly but surely go downhill from there.
Great, this article got me nostalgic for my childhood. So I just got on eBay and placed a bid for some POGS! I hope you're happy.
This was an excellent read.
and had integrity... smh.
LOL Microsoft made some consoles and stuff- 1998: Get the hell out.....
Good article. It was a good time to be a PC gamer as well.
I loved 1998. It was one of the best years of my life. Just got my PS1 for 97 xmas. In 98, I played a ton of games like Tomb Raider 1-3, Crash Bandicoot 1-3, Need for Speed 3, Tekken 2, Soul Blade, Deathtrap Dungeon, GT1, Resident Evil 2, ...and a ton more. ahhh the good old days.
90's was the golden age of video games
Ah, yes. An era where developers didn't care too much about profit, japanese games of all kinds flourished, and some of the best platformers of gaming made their stride.
90's was the golden age for all types of entertainment media. 80's arguable tops the 90's in music though.
Hey 1998 what's your most underrated game? 1998: Spyro: Year of the dragon. - Memories. ;')
one of the best RPG's EVER came out in 1998 Baldur's Gate!! Destroys FFVII~
back then consoles and pcs were very different, now consoles feel like cheap plug and play pcs...
true that...totally different types of games on each platform too, even ps1 and n64....now....everyone wants to be the same the whole game-made-for-everyone crap is disturbing there are still some devs that dont compromise their vision for the almighty dollar and we get rare gems like Demos Souls, The Witcher 1 and 2, Oblivion, but sadly most games are made to try to fit every person imaginables taste into them
