Game Podunk Editor Marshall Henderson writes, "Minecraft and Terraria... They're pretty similar.
Both games have you mining and crafting, carving away at dirt, wood, minerals, and assorted other stuff to build structures, fight back enemies, and otherwise give you the warm fuzzies associated with accomplishing the goals you've set for yourself. There are two things you have to consider, though: One, that sounds (and, in fact, totally is awesome), and two, those are only the superficial comparisons, not taking in account the core spirit of the games.
These two titans of indie games are not the same at all. More than just being a dimension apart, Minecraft and Terraria are completely different experiences. Don't believe me? Well, equip your best diamond pickaxe because we're going to explore this."
