ARM will Push Mobile Devices to PS3 and Xbox 360 Graphics by 2013

ARM is predicting their new Mali chip will be able to have the graphical capabilities of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 by 2013. At the moment ARM’s current T604 chip is capable of the graphics seen on Playstation 2 games and Xbox games. ARM says they will be able to have the graphical power of current-gen consoles within 18 months in mobile devices!

By the time the Chip gets released, newer consoles will enter the scene. Still, PS3 and Xbox 360 level graphics on my mobile phone sounds fun =P

By then it would have been almost a decade the Xbox 360 and PS3 have been on the market so it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

It speaks volume of how far behind we are being held back because console manufacturers aren't introducing a new cycle. We need a 4th competitor that is really going to push technology forward (and no, Nintendo doesn't count).

I might go back to PC, with a Xbox controller....

Yeah PS3 / 360 graphics sound nice on a phone, but when the textures are running the size of the file up to 4gigs, it is no longer 'pick up and play' because you have longer download time, load times and increased battery consumption, on top of the normal phone functions and OS

I'm worried about battery consumption, such graphics will take a hell of a lot of juice. Phones with these chips will have to be a bit bigger than the usual.

Procedurally generated graphics. You can still create graphically demanding games and detailed worlds without resorting to raster images. Potentially less flexible for the artist and more difficult, but this process dramatically reduces file sizes.

Quite amazing if you ask me. I never thought mobile devices will be capable of such power for a very very long time. 2013 sounds very early for the mobile industry.

Yet it won't really matter if the screen is 5inchs or less, I mean how many people can put up at looking at that small of a screen?

I got a Droid X for now and the screen is a good size but I can't stand playing something big like that on it (Not even watching 720p movies).

It is not the screen size that is the problem,,..

graphics are irrelevant in making a good game. In fact its the least important part

Im playing a mmo game on my iPad...yes a full mmorpg game! I join groups, we chat, we do quests thogether just like a real mmorpg game WITHOUT buttons. It's a deep huge game.

That is just one example...there are so much good games out on Android and especialy Apple's App Store...there is something for everyone.

Buttons are just 1 issue. The games are shit. Ive yet to find one rpg as deep as pokemon 1, 1 action adventure game as deep as links awakening,one platformer as deep as the kid icarus,metroid or mario games ect

What if I say that I have stopped playing some games on the PC and PS3 becaus of tablets and phones? Im bored of World of Warcraft but now im playing a mmo on a tablet instead...

Hardware evolve and gamers evolve....the future is bright. But hardcore pc and console gamers that dont belive or want to game on any other media should be scared....realy scared..you are the dinosaur soon :)

Graphics power is nice.

I think that the power consumption and control issues inherent in small devices need to catch up. I'd love COD on a small portable but would need to be able to play it as well as a console for me to buy it.

The mobile market gets so many upgrades on a yearly bases whereas the console market gets an upgrade every 5-6 years. I wouldn't be surprised if mobiles have better graphical and technical capabilities than the PS3 & 360, and I wouldn't be surprised if they match the capabilities of the PS4 & 720 just 2/3 years after their release.

Battery life will get better so stop using that as a stupid excuse.
