GameSpot on Crysis: DirectX 10 vs. DirectX 9

Crysis, the poster child for modern PC gaming and DirectX 10, will arrive shortly. Crytek has tortured us for years with screenshots and short hands-on experiences showing off the game's wide-open world, with picturesque tropical battlegrounds, perfect for sipping Mai Tais or peppering random bad guys with automatic rifle fire. Crytek released the single-player demo late last week, and gamespot set up a few test systems to see just how the game looks under Windows Vista compared to Windows XP. gamespot also took some in-game benchmarks to see how the frame rates compare in DirectX 9 and DirectX 10.

Is it just me or the Vista screens look exactly like XP ones? I don't know but in these comparisons, I don't see the power of DX10. In previous comparisons, DX10 and DX9 felt really diffrent but here...

Yeah, the only real difference I noticed was some shadowing...like on the last picture, the rocks in the upper right of the pic are better shadowed in Vista. Nothing to gripe about though imo.

Edit: You know, after looking at it a second time, the difference in shadowing could be due to the sun being in a different position. If that's the case, then it doesn't really look like there's a difference at all.

yeah other than errors popping up in XP version there isnt much difference here, but you dont get any more performance either.

edit: to clarify, when you open the console, you can see many errors there, nothing to break the game

I am not getting any extra performance though, probably because rest of comp other than gfx card is junk.

DarthNihilus, the XP version actually has better performance!!! Check the second page and the performance comparisons near the end. Very High Quality on Windows XP has a longer and better performance bar than the same on Vista!

Wish I could see, but I'm not supporting Gamespot anymore, they get not hits from me!

No wonder they disabled the Very-high quality in Xp..... it wouldn't give people incentive to upgrade to Vista and DX10, the hacked Xp very-high settings look almost identical to the Vista version.

I smell a rat. Shenanigans and bamboozlement just to push 'ware. Shame on you Crytek.

told you this game is only 1/4 of the hype of the graphics that this game really has, the game does not look the best, TOO BAD

ShiftyLookingCow3609d ago (Edited 3609d ago )

so being able to run Very High on XP makes the game look bad, well screw you retard
