Crysis 2 DirectX 11 The 'First Next-Gen Game' - Crytek

NowGamer: Crytek thinks the DirectX 11 features headed to Crysis 2 make it the first, true next-gen game... (Cryengine 3, Crysis 2, Crytek, Industry, Next-Gen, PC, PS3, Tech, Xbox 360)

Yep... Crytek lost their chance.

'First Next-Gen Game' will probably be Skyrim or Battlefield 3.

Skyrim is not "next-gen". Battlefield 3? Maybe. MAYBE.

TimeSplitters 4 using the CryEngine 3 DirectX 11, well at least its rumored
lastdual  +   1615d ago
I'd say The Witcher 2 is already pretty "next gen" if your rig has the muscle to max it out.
Motorola  +   1615d ago
Can we wait until we see Skyrim PC footage maxed out before making assumptions like that? BF3, PROBABLY. Anything else this year...probably not. But Skyrim has a slight chance
evrfighter  +   1615d ago
Would have loved to see witcher in dx11 glory. I would label it the pinnacle of dx9 however.

First next gen title is going to bf3 or arma 3

You can't patch in next gen. Yerli deserves this mess he stuck himself in. only a few months and crysis 2 is already off the grid. With the lineup coming out this year and next. This game's legs have been amputated.
stu888  +   1615d ago
next gen will come with PS4 and the next xbox.
Talking about next gen now is crap.

A generation is PS1 to PS2 or PS2 to PS3.

If you think BF3 and Crysis 2 DX11 are like the gap between PS2 and PS3 from games coming out on this gen of consoles, then take off your fanboy glasses.

Its like when Half Life 2 and Far Cry 1 came out. The PS2 wasn't capable of those graphics, but the PS3 shits on those graphics. The same thing will happen with BF3 and Crysis 2 DX11.

I'll take a bet with anyone who disagrees with me.

u do realize that consoles are incapable of doing dx11... right? I mean the next generation of consoles will be what pcs are today... or what pcs are a year ago. I mean when 360 and ps3 came out ... pcs were already 2 generations ahead in graphics card power.

stu888  +   1615d ago
when talking of a generation in gaming, I am correct. end.

Only the most expensive PC owners would deny this.
History has shown that each new console since PS1 has portrayed a new generation in games and what they're capable of.

PC specs don't come into a new gen or not. They'll be some super PC somewhere that will probs be able to play PS6 games but that don't mean we're two gens ahead does it!

PC gamers stop sucking each others dicks and except you've all wasted your money on a slight graphical increase! suck em!
NukaCola  +   1615d ago
Epic was in GAMES magazine with thier new engine. I call that next gen. Next gen is developing now but until current PC/consoles can run it, it's still this gen. Plus tuntil games are built native to DX11, they aren't truly using next gen capabilities. I LoL a bit because I bet DX12 will be out before nex gen game even release
pixelsword  +   1615d ago
@ Kurylo3d:

What you are saying is traditionally true but this gen is a little different. This time it's all about digging into the console's cores and very few 1st, 2nd, or 3rd party developers have done that for, well, everyone; including the PC.

Here's what I mean:

- Rage, for example, will probably be the best looking game on every format because of the developers (people checking to see that it was actually running on the PS3 and not a high-end PC, for example) because of Id getting into the cores. Conversely, devs are also getting into the cores for the PC and not the consoles. Crytek is a good example because they couldn't even get their game in HD on any consoles, yet boasts the best looking game in gaming (Crysis).

- Another X-factor is people are still getting their head around the Cell Processor, which is proving to be one of the most curious gifts or scorned curses in gaming, depending on your point of view.

For example:

It's a curse because it's hard to program for from what I hear, but other than that, there's a huge up-wing in terms of advantages if you get into correct programming for the cell.

* There is at least one game in 1080p on the 360 and the PS3, but for the PS3, it's success for most of their games being in 1080p would be if devs use the Cell/RSX configuration plus their algorithms in a manner that would produce results like Factor 5 did four years ago with Lair. The RSX has to be used in tandem with the Cell to even start to approach getting great graphics out of the PS3, then, your algorithms have to run off the cell (through the cell) and when you do that, you can achieve 1080p and 60fps just like Factor 5 did with Lair. Yes, and I know that there are games that go way above 1080p on the PC, but for most people on the planet who game, even on the PC, they probably won't see that level for years due to pricing and the bad economy; so for now, 1080p is something all developers ought to strive for for not only the PC, but for consoles, and I think both the 360 and PS3 can do it.

* As of yet (not saying it's not possible, it just haven't happened this gen) there hasn't been a game yet on the PC or a mod for The Unreal or Source engine that has the players in a HD, FPS game that went above 128 players, and even then it runs very poorly or is stripped of graphics whereas the PS3 has a game with 256 players in it with virtually no lag almost all of the time (I'm not saying 100% no lag, because that's a lie: I got into a few that were laggy in part of the match... not the whole match, but definitely a part).

MIT has proven that the Cell is very powerful when they used it on their folding project; and even though the PS3 participants were in much smaller numbers than their PC participants, the PS3 processed much more data than the PC.

Basically, what I mean that this gen there's a lot more grey area here than meets the eye.

The main feature of DX11 is tessellation which in all honesty simply automatically adds more detail to everything. It's a great feature and PC gamers are lucky to get it but alot of the same could be accomplished on consoles but it would just take more time(and likely more memory) depending on the project and who's working on it.
the_kutaragi_baka  +   1616d ago
lol funny, majority of textures in Crysis 2 are half the resolution quality of those in Crysis 1. Crytek downgraded the textures significantly in order to be on consoles.

They could have easily included higher res textures and DX11 for PC (like other devs) but chose not to, so really is it consoles to blame or Crytek/EA?
RevXM  +   1615d ago
Yeah like the Console version have the same textures as pc anyways... Now that is lol.

Yes blame the consoles!/s Textures and DX11 should be a Cakewalk. BF3 is doing it.

These guys need to learn to STFU because crysis 2 is NOT as good as they think it is.

The brief time crytek were kings of graphics has passed. Battlefield 3 pretty much makes crysis 2 squeal like a pig.

just saying...

And when you sit back from the TV its harder to tell than when your up close on PC.

ShoryukenII  +   1616d ago
Lens of Truth checked and Killzone 2 had better graphics than that demo. Killzone 3 has better graphics than the final game. I hate how Crytek hyped the graphics for that game. Now a lot of people think it is the best looking shooter on consoles. Check any Crysis 2 review and you'll see how advertising can skew someone's opinion. I played the multiplayer and it is crap. I like the climbing and the high jump but the heavy reliance (sprint) on suit energy is BS. I expect the single player to be good (I haven't played it) so it would only be worth a rental. But it's sad that the first Crysis looks better than Crysis 2. These devs have no heart.
IcarusOne  +   1615d ago
Yes, but Crysis 2 is far and away a better game with better action, better set-pieces, a better story, and better characters.

jellybalboa  +   1615d ago
crysis 2 was a shit investment
fatstarr  +   1615d ago
sorry to burst ur bubble but crysis is original a pc game not meant to satisfy console gamers.

imo crysis is 1/2 benchmark and 1/2 game.

its a playable tech demo, fun but not the best but its nice to see some one taking the initiative to put time and effort into trying to max out a game.
halocursed  +   1616d ago
Some people already have the DX 11 patch...How does it look?
Fishy Fingers  +   1616d ago
Some people got the texture patch but it cant be installed until Crytek release the official update. So I dont think anyone outside of a select few have it working.

But comparisons show a marked improvement, although the gameplay needed the work, not the visuals. I'll still be DLing :)
GamerSciz  +   1616d ago
With what we have seen of BF3, I think Crysis 2 even with DX11 has some catching up to do.
Fishy Fingers  +   1616d ago
Well Crysis 2 will have the Dx11 patch before BF3 releases. Thats the only reason that they can make such a claim.
Fishy Fingers  +   1616d ago
"next-gen" as a term doesnt really work with PCs.
no_more_trolling  +   1616d ago
when u have to upgrade ur graphics card, processor and ram

that is next gen
Fishy Fingers  +   1616d ago
Well my 'current gen' hardware will be able to run the Dx11 version without problem. Does that mean the game is 'this gen' still then?

It's a silly term to use for PCs as each 'gen' has a vast range (of specs/power) and a new 'gen' is released every few months, based on 'previous gen' hardware.
#6.1.1 (Edited 1616d ago ) | Agree(14) | Disagree(0) | Report
fatstarr  +   1615d ago
hes right.

it is next gen,

processor and ram arent the problem its your card.

if you want to play this first you need a 64bit os which 50% of the computer world doesnt have

then you need a true dx11 compatible card which happen to start at Radeon HD5550 and gtx450

a majority still have gtx 280s and 9800gtxs so yea major upgrades have to be done to play this fully.

not to mention a second card always helps and that's a 100-900$ upgrade depending on what you need.

what crytek meant was the next gen interns of gaming not hardware. leaping over the current gen by forcing devs to make real games with dx11 and all that jazz.
ct03  +   1616d ago
Yup. It's a silly thing to say.
If anything, Crysis 1 was the first "next gen" game because it's above and beyond anything the current gen consoles have put out. As is Metro 2033.
Kahvipannu  +   1616d ago
PC is, and allways will be the next-gen ^^

I guess we have been playing the troublesome plagued beta version from the get go.

Now this is a true release.

So many complaints in the mycrysis forums that A lot of pc gamers just gave up while the community is slipping away.

Also I have noticed undercover pr heads in the forums always trying to downplay peoples complaints incognito mode. Uber lame.

Technically they can be correct...in a almost comical way

This patch will be released before BF3 hits retail...That's the only thing they can claim BECAUSE WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN DEMOS OF BF3 RUNNING IN PRE-APLHA WITH FULL DX11 SUPPORT...
Now saying that, until Crysis 2 includes almost full environmental destruction in real time like BF3 and can claim that the Cryenegine 3 was built from the ground up using DX11, there claim is...well just THEIR CLAIM.

Theonetheonly  +   1615d ago
they akready did that with crysis 1, battlefield is honestly a little behind crysis with destructability, and i would reckon that the accuracy and fidelity of the physics in the original crysis would still put frostbite 2,.0 to shame

when i say physics i mean when stuff explodes to a lot of pieces the small pieces dont fall through eachother to the ground and dissapear, all bodies interact and move realistically, even the smoke was physical in the original crysis, you could blow it out of the way with a grenade or blow it away with the exhaust of one of those flying vehicles or the helicopters.

the physics were and still are absolutely TOP NOTCH, REALTIME, and more accurate. most of the time stuff will not collide with other stuff in the same debris pile and shortly after dissapear. watch the barrel explosions or the nuke explosions on youtube for the og crysis you will prally see what i mean
Megaton  +   1616d ago
Still needs to prove its visuals are on par with the original Crysis. Right now it's still a disgrace to the name.
dirthurts  +   1615d ago
I disagree with you on that one.
Crysis 2 may not have the massive open environments, but in most ways it looks much better than the original, aside from a poor texture here and there.
The new texture pack should fix that though.
kramun  +   1616d ago
I actually really like the game, thought it was a good shooter with a decent campaign. Was it as good as the first one and Warhead? No, but it was still a decent shooter. I'll enjoy going through it for a second spin with the new DirectX 11 features, they arrived late but at least they turned up.

A lot of hate for the game but I enjoyed it.
JeffGUNZ  +   1616d ago
Why is this linked in the 360 section? This patch is only for the PC, right?
moaradin  +   1616d ago
That's Ironic because the first game looked much better and that game came out in what, 2007?
CoD511  +   1615d ago
I really don't get how people say Crysis 1 looks better. Crysis 2 looks better by a slight bit, not a huge amount as would be expected of a sequel four years later.
Gran Touring  +   1615d ago
With Crysis 1, the more you throw at it, the better it looks and the faster it runs.

Crysis 2 was very well optimized for lower-spec computers, but the engine doesn't scale up much for high-end hardware.

People say the first looks better, and it kinda does, given the right hardware.

So, obviously I'm going to get disagrees, but I'm also going to mention what unicron and others have already said:

It's not the best-looking shooter on console, let alone game. It was supposed to look better than Killzone, and it failed at that. Killzone isn't the best looking game on console, so Crysis 2 can't possibly be visually superior.

As for it being "next-gen," that's a term that is, honestly, used to refer to consoles. PC doesn't count toward it, as PC standards change virtually on a monthly basis. In such a malleable arena, it's all but impossible to pin down what a "generation" is... which is why it's used as a console term.
Darkfiber  +   1615d ago
Graphics don`t mean a thing when the gameplay is generic and boring, the story is nonsensical and just plain atrocious at times, the NPCs and voice acting are hollow and poorly written, the level design is linear and the world is non-interactive. Oh no, this game is FARRRR from next gen.

Probably, but the product was clearly rushed, and they wanted to downplay the fact that most Nvidia cards that people are using right now still don't have DX11, especially with that giant "NVIDIA, THE WAY IT'S MEANT TO BE PLAYED" logo in the loading screen.

Next gen consoles always use what pc hardware has had for a few years.
Therefore, Direct X 11 on current pc = Next gen console.
