While Metroid is not a dreadful game, it regrettably comes off as primitive, archaic, and baffling.
Heresy! You have to be out of your fing mind!!!!!!! Even some 20+ years later, you'd be hard pressed to find a game that surpasses the level of exploration, emersion, and issolation than the original Metroid. For crying out loud, it gave birth to an entire genre of kick ass games based on the joy of exploration and discovery! The side scolling adventure platformer, commonly refered to as Metroidvania, and all kinds of amazing games like blaster master, SOTN and the gba/ds castlevanias, Shadow Complex, and the recent Outland, wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Metroid. The genre this game created has better gameplay and deeper level designs than 99% of the over produced multi-million dollar glorified war movie clone bullshit that passes for a game these days. The author needs to go back to COD or something and leave opinions about real games to someone else.
"While Metroid is not a dreadful game, it regrettably comes off as primitive, archaic, and baffling." Baffling.... To me, that says the author has trouble with games that require skill and patience. The original Metroid was a hard game, but if you're willing to invest some time and effort into completing it, it's a fun game. As far as being primitive and archaic.... The game is 25 years old. Even still, Metroid was years ahead of other games in what it offered. Your first play-through(without assistance) will most likely take you longer than the majority of games that come out these days.
This sounds like it's coming from a person that wasn't even alive when the game was made. They've been spoiled by where games are now so they can't appreciate where games came from. That's like taking a kid from today, sending him back in time and telling him to rate how fun the hoop and stick was to play with that kids played with back in the 1800's.
Metroid remains my favorite NES game.
Metroid for the win! but I more prefer GBA Metroid:zero mission remake of this game... but still, this is origins and I appreciate that.. all metroid games, except Metroid: hunters are great to me..
I thought the original was a bad game, but after playing Zero Mission I realized how great it is.
You gotta remember, he's not reviewing this off of nostalgia factor or how it created a genre, he's just reviewing it, and the fact is the first Metroid really isn't all that great, it took until Super for the series to become amazing, and Super DOES still hold up amazingly well today.
Yeah, cool. It doesn't change the fact that his opinion is garbage and in the minority. Crap site as well I might add.
What? Too hard for you? Personally, I think that games has become easier and easier, at the point we -or at least, me- are having problems when trying to finish old school games. FMV that the let you in the middle of action while doing nothing and regenerative health... wtf. Metroid is still a good game.
Was the author born in the late 90's? Try harder kiddo.
by todays standards it may get a 3/5 against modern games. By historical standards it should get a 4.5/5
Sure, without context it is a bad game when compared to others. The game, however, is a masterpiece.
