Microsoft is looking into Cross Platform Online Gaming

GOS: "You might have new ways of staying connected with your friends during online play on your Xbox 360 as the possibilities of asynchronous online gaming will be discussed next month at a Microsoft Conference.

The whole point of the conference will describe how Xbox Live services can be used together to manage multiplayer, matchmaking and messaging during you online gaming sessions."

The story is too old to be commented.

"Xbox Live delivers the best entertainment experience unmatched by anyone else, with 35 million actively engaged members. We have a high level of expectation for our game developers to ensure that all Live experiences remain top notch. Because we can't guarantee this level of quality, or control the player experience on other consoles or gaming networks, we currently do not open our network to games that allow this cross-over capability."

Lol im pretty sure Steam is a lot better than XBL.

fluffydelusions2371d ago (Edited 2371d ago )

I like Steam better too but not as many use it compared to XBL.

Hicken2371d ago

I was gonna quote the very same thing, Kon. It's.... pathetic that this would even pop up like three days after Microsoft was quoted as shutting down the very idea of cross platform gaming.

Simco8762371d ago

Agree lol and the article that states that is one of the "main" ones on the top of N4G

Quote:

Here's a Microsoft spokesperson saying "no," while promoting how awesome the Xbox 360's online service is: "Xbox Live delivers the best entertainment experience unmatched by anyone else, with 35 million actively engaged members. We have a high level of expectation for our game developers to ensure that all Live experiences remain top notch. Because we can't guarantee this level of quality, or control the player experience on other consoles or gaming networks, we currently do not open our network to games that allow this cross-over capability."

How can people disagree with you're statement. As it is fact. Why would people approve this article when days ago Microsoft said they will never allow cross-platform experience with ps3 or pc...

Peaceful_Jelly2371d ago

Allowing cross-platform online would be the same as admitting that they are actually ripping-off the consumer you know. What would think a person that is paying to play online when he discover that he is actually playing against someone using a free service... He'd be like "why the heck am I paying then?".

It's true that in XBL you have stuff like cross-game chat but those features are already built-in in the console. That's like when you pay for DLC that is already on the disc... The servers where you play online are from the 3RD party developer and they are the same as the ones on the PS3, where you play for for free.

Dark_king2371d ago

Actually MS does run the majority of the servers you play on.The only publisher I know of that runs there own servers on Live is EA.

TXIDarkAvenger2370d ago

Steam is better than Xbox live and PSN imo.

Even if they really are looking to do cross platform gaming, I can guarantee that there will be a fee to do so. Like $15 a month or something.

wwm0nkey2371d ago

There are already Cross Platform games on the 360, just not a lot

ShdaowRun and FFXI come to mind.

Microsoft in this last year seems to be getting more open with their network. While talking to some of the Tera online team this year at E3 they are in talks with MS to bring the game over to 360 with cross platform play if they allow it.

Simon_Brezhnev2371d ago

I hope PS3 gets Tera. Hell im still waiting on Blade and Soul.

wwm0nkey2371d ago

Tera needs to come to all platforms, such an amazing MMO and not the WoW clone BS.

Eiffel2371d ago

Lost Planet Colonies is another one.

Hicken2371d ago

Two games: one that nobody plays, and another that's cross-platform with a last-gen console. That's the same as having none.

coryok2371d ago

microsoft had said that they only allowed ffxi because they didnt believe xbox live was being seen as a viable online gaming platform so they let ffxi on to legitimize their service and that it wouldnt be happening anymore

what happened last year (or recently) that made microsoft more open with their networking policies?

radphil2371d ago

FF11 is done by SE's own servers.

Sounds good, lets hope its just more than talk and actually goes through.

TheROsingleB2371d ago

Steam already wanted to work with them *facepalm*... could have been implemented by now...

KingDustero2371d ago

Exactly. Also it can be done this very second. However M$ needs to find a way to charge those who connect to it whom aren't XBL members so that they can still justify the price of XBL.

XBL is a total rip-off when compared to PSN. BOTH services are great and are on the same level IMO. I've had both for two years now and they are basically identical in quality.

The issues is that M$ can't let their paying customers see someone else playing in the SAME game as them for FREE with the SAME experience and quality.

Redgehammer2371d ago

I can't speak for PSN, other than I do not like the GUI. However, I do not find XBL to be a rip-off, in fact it is an integral part of my day, and great part of my families fun time.

TheROsingleB2371d ago

I'm not dogging on XBox Live, as I actually do think the price is justified, but I think the issue is that they are too stubborn and will probably prefer to try and implement it into "Games for Windows". Expanding on that division, instead of Steam.
Which is unfortunate, because Steam is very much superior and holds a much stronger footing in the PC market. Completely understandable from their own perspective, but unfortunate for people who prefer steam (Pretty much everyone).

NotSoSilentBob2371d ago

M$ put the cabosh on Cross Game play for Unreal Tournament 3, why would they allow it now? All that Xboxlive is becoming is another "game OS" that is being forced on all windows users.

Godmars2902371d ago

There's also Dust 514 and Defiance, both of which MS turned. Likely because they're also on the PS3.

They may want it, but only on their own terms.

coryok2371d ago

they arent turning them down because they'll be on the ps3 also, its because these games arent viable to be run on microsofts cloud without raising the price that users pay per month.

im not sure how defiance will be run, but i would make the assumption that it'll be a persistent world in which microsofts cloud cant handle which will need 3rd party support. dust on the other hand will definitely need to be run on ccp servers to communicate with eve. microsoft has no basis to charge for access to 3rd party servers so you wouldnt need to pay for live to play dust online. it would be directly competing with live which is what microsoft doesnt want.
