As Modern Warfare 3 inches ever closer to release day, so does Call of Duty Elite, a subscription based stat tracking and clan management service. Could it possibly be the end of the truly free multiplayer FPS experience we've come to know and love?
I don't support CoD Elite, but this article is giving the wrong impression. The majority of features are FREE and only the very hardcore will actually subscribe. http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...
Most of the features are free. The subscription based service will be useful only for people who buy all of COD map packs. Activision won't charge for multiplayer. $60 for XBL Gold + a subscription fee for COD? Their sales on the Xbox would go down drastically, and Activision knows that. I'd rather play the dozens of other great games that come out than subscription based COD
*only the very stupid will actually subscribe* I mean, the features are useless to anyone. So why pay money for them... Unless they're gonna tack more stuff on.... So I can understand what it means. It's gonna expand and expand and expand until the point where if you cancel your subscription, you can no longer play the game. They'll start putting exclusive overpowered weapons on it. Then they'll give you a little badge to put on your playertag. Then before you know it, Call of duty is a subscription-based game. I don't want it to happen, but it's activision. They want your money, not your customer satisfaction.
No, because hopefully nobody will buy it and show activision and other companies looking at this option that this is a big no go
Ah multiplayer will still remain free
Um... the majority of Call of Duty players ARE ALREADY PAYING FOR MULTIPLAYER!
do you mean internet access?
he probably meant xbox live, or with their souls... :D
Looks like another article that did it's research /sarcasm Everything announced up to now is FREE. There is no pay to play MP and the only subscription related thing that we know is map packs are free with it. We have no idea how much it will cost or anything else.
It's a slippery slope if you ask me. Even if the subscription content is purely aesthetic, it's akin to putting a Cash Shop-esque system into a $60 game. Considering that those $60 is simply for the rights to play the game, you should at least get everything the game has to offer. Don't even get me started on DLC...
I mean... Nothing is free, but you can't possibly charge 60 bucks for a game and THEN collect additional monthly fees for playing it online. That just isn't conceivable to me.
. I think an argument that M$ has already done that could be made. In terms of actual games doing so...hmmm...COD is in a very good position in terms of sales to pull something like this off. Do you think Homefront or MOH could pull it of...no likely. COD Elite had 2+ million gamers who wanted to be a part of the beta. With numbers like that, I doubt it will fail. Activision is going about it the right way. They created a company specifically to work and build it. There has been a rather silly push by the haters to try and blur the issue, even Johnny Ravioli at EA is publicly trying to create confusion ( a rather desperate plea ) in hope that it fails and the immense pressure he is feeling from shareholders will subside...not going to happen Johnny. Did you forget that Activision owns the W.O.W...lol...they have it all figured out already.
Multiplayer is more or less what sells a lot of games these days, devs will not charge for it, at least multiplayer as we know it, you'll see more tacking on of extras at a fee though, like Elite. But as a whole, you wont be paying just to play your game online.
gold subscriber in the uk? keep up with the map packs for black ops? its already cost you £100 to play , and i think 2 more map packs will make £120 for the year £40 Live £40 game £10 first strike £10 escalation £10 Annihilation £10 ?????? AND THEY WANT MORE!
If you don't like the map packs, don't buy them. Nobody if forcing you to buy them. You can still enjoy the game the same way without the map packs.
I agree buddy the problem is i do like the map packs along with most of my friends
i am no fan of making us pay for more maps. it segregates the online community to where Act forces you to buy if A) not being able to play with friends if you dont have the pack or B) if a server has a rotation of stock and new maps. sure there are solutions we can make as gamers, but the easiest would be showing us some love for purchasing the game by giving us free maps.
Didn't even bother to read the article. Which part of "multiplayer will always be free" don't people understand? Services such as Elite are just an extra layer for income, that's it. The moment Activision charges to actually play online, will be the moment Call of Duty will see huge decline in it's market share.
No, but it may help bring about the end of COD. Actually, neither will happen. They will probably milk COD until it's dry though, just like Guitar Hero.
Well if you play online multiplayer games on the 360 then its not free anyway, but COD Elite is just a way of ripping off customers who continue to buy into a severly milked franchise.
the author is not well informed. The same features found in year to year COD will be free as always; however, this new community thing is not. Also, I don't think developers will follow suit. DICE gave me new hope to believe that developers will add free features to encourage more and new buyers.
